Ed's House of Gems, "Just A Stones Throw Away" was a staple for rock collectors and rockhounders alike. Located in Portland Oregon, this store has become legend.
"Everything For The Rockhound!"
It was recently Permenently Closed down to the public. This is Big news in the local rockhounding community where I live. There were big sales and cheap prices weeks before they shut down for good, and there were multiple generations of family members in there ringing up items.
This footage was taken last summer, and I never did anything with it. I figured the most prevelent time to honor this landmark was now.
This video is a Tribute to the Historical Landmark, Rocks4Sobriety Style.
Thank You for your service.❤️
Enjoy.
Love,
Rocks4Sobriety.🔥

My Grandfather was a prospector/rock hound. My first time into ED'S , I was 10 yrs old. I was hooked on rock hounding and lapidary from then on. I remember the bins of raw materials, tigereye ,jasper, crystals and jewelery supplies. OH and the smell of the shop I found intoxicating. That was 57 years ago. Thanks " ED'S HOUSE OF GEMS " for awakening a passion in me that lives on today. And , yes I am teaching my Grandsons , 8 & 9 about the wonders of gems.

Yes, it's kind of a sucky thing to happen for sure. I'm hoping that whatever takes it's place will respect the institution that once was in its place. Long live house of gems!!!😎👍

Great people. Really enjoyed going there when i worked across the street. They helped me with many rock cuttings and identifications. Portland is such a sad town now.

I would be so broke if I worked across the street!😆 Yes, it is super sad. I feel like the hobby is a dying art. All I've been hearing lately are that shops are closing down, and old timer miners and Hobbyists passing away. Everything is so cheap now online now, and sadly it's super hard to compete anymore. It is definitely starting to slowly feel like there are some rockhound ghost town vibes going on over here lol. I'm hoping the next generation picks it back up and carries the torch moving forward. Thanks for the support, the comment, and for checking out the channel!🙏

Bought my first 12" slab saw at Ed's back in 2009. Sorry to see them go as was fun to stop by periodically and pick up something I needed like acrylic displayers, Indian blackskin agate or even a gad tool. Times just keep changing. Thx for sharing.

I remember losing my favorite rock shop years ago. Old fellow passed and they shut the doors. It sat there for several years with the inventory inside then his sister-in-law came in and got it all. That was followed by several more shops in the area. Sadly, there are only one or two left within 50 miles of me and those folks are getting old like me. Everything is online now, Ebay or websites. I miss the old little shops. One of them I use to go to had allot of local material. The man had a 72lb corundum sitting near the door and 100lb quartz crystal he has found. He had bins with local material from now closed mines so cheap that if I knew then what I know now, I'd bought more of it. Those days are gone forever.

Wow. I don't even know what to say. That sounds terrible. I know that times are changing, but I am really hoping that the next generation carries the torch and spreads the knowledge so maybe more shops will open with rockhounding roots. This hobby saved my life. It's certainly sad to watch the shops and mines slowly crumble away right in front of my eyes. I am hopeful it will bounce back, but it is depressingly sad nonetheless. This is very relatable. Thank you so much for sharing your story.😎✌️

Very sad to see it close. My grandfather took me to ed's almost 60 years ago. I just took my grandchildren there last year. What we got there is still some of their most treasured possesions. Wish they would be able to take their children and grandchildren. Anyone know why it closed?

I am honestly am not sure why, but I think the family fell on hard times and could no longer support the shop. That is my best theory. I've gone there for years, and I didn't even know they closed until a friend told me. I wish I could have said goodbye, for sure. Thank you for the support.🙏

For sure. Besides Handley's in Hazel Dell Wasgington, do you know of any other place that sells the sanding belts for richardsons high speed sander and other expanding drum belts, diamond blades, polishing grit, tools for wire wrapping, cluster cerium oxide or other polishing media, and rockhounding tools? I just don't know of really anywhere else that sells that type of stuff in Portland! Thanks for tuning in, I appreciate it. 🙏

You are right about that! I don't think anything in the world can compare to Arizona.💯 It's just a local family shop in Portland that has been in the community a long time, spreading rockhounding for ages, and has turned a lot of people onto the hobby growing up. It had a nostalgic vibe to it that I just can't explain in words. I guess you could say it's us locals here that are sad to see it go. Thanks for checking out the video!
