Classic! Lugosi doesn't get enough credit for his post-Dracula roles in flicks like The Corpse Vanishes et al and of course his brilliant revenge-on-the-world-that-spurned-him scene here. Thanks for posting this gem, Cult Cinema Classics! As for Mr. Wood's role as director etc. here and the output of his crew, the first time I screened this I was surprised at the quality of the score and other aspects of production including certain FX, like the lightning striking the tree at the beginning. Other scenes, like the infamous octopus battle are hilarious. In short, Bride of the Monster, although a mixed bag, is fairly high-quality for an Ed Wood picture and charming in a well-intentioned and even entertaining way similar to Plan Nine FOS. By the way, anyone else love the film Ed Wood (1994) starring Johnny Depp as Mr. Wood? If you're at all an Ed Wood fan, and even if you abhor his work, Ed Wood is worth screening. A Tim Burton joint, Ed Wood paints the titular director in a sympathetic light, offers some important insights into his life and directorial modus operandi, gives us a look at the tragic nature of Bela Lugosi's later years and features wonderful performances from Depp, Landau (who I believe won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his amazing performance as Mr. Lugosi), Jeffrey Jones as Criswell, Lisa Marie as Vampira and Bill Murray as Bunny Breckinridge not to mention cameos from actors who starred in Ed Wood films including Conrad Brooks from Plan Nine et al. It's a fun-filled 127 minute comedy-biography with some effective drama in the mix and will please most viewers but especially fans of Ed Wood's work. And btw that little review is (C) 2023 Michael S Kottler :)
Appreciate your comments. Love Lugosi and have watched many of his movies and read about his life. If you haven't seen him in Ghost Ship you must see it. He plays a straight dramatic role and it shows what he might have been if only given the opportunity. He was a major dramatic actor in Hungary playing in many Shakespeare plays.
I have a 40+ year old VHS of this movie. I rented it frequently, and when the shop converted to DVD in the 90's, I was able to buy it for pennies on the dollar.
I concur....it's something one either gets or not....he made movies that were expressions of love of the artwork regardless their " quality ". He got them made. This was his vision. A true DIY maverick
Looks like Ed found more money for props, than in most of his films. I "wore" an octopus on my shoulder, backstage at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, about 32(?) years ago, thanks to the Assistant Director; private tour ~ my then-wife freaked out, so I kept "wearing" it to watch her (and others) reaction 😎 🐙🐙🐙🐙
This is really not a bad movie at all; much better than expected. The Fedora sporting Reporter is Whitey from the Bowery Boys who has an impressive 320 IMBD acting credits.
Boy! Bela sure looked good for being almost dead. Doubtless-so this aided him in being extra creepy and malevolent. Man! What I couldn't do if I could get my hands on some of that laboratory equipment! Honestly, Eddie had corralled some really good actors here, and the intro music was EPIC!! I'm beginning to think that this one is his BEST movie, it being serious and mysterious!
Wait… What? …Errrr : so the good doctor escapes to the swamp only to get shot 28 times - while making the most exquisite face expressions - and then gets rammed by a giant rock, smothered by « the creature », struck by lightning and last but not least EXPLODES IN A NUCLEAR MUSHROOM!!! You gotta hand it to Ed Woods man ; he sure knew how to end a movie. ❤
L'attore Bela Lugosi è nato a Lugoj ,in Romania ,la mia città di nascita ! Grazie per questo film!🙏 Vi saluto da Italia 💚🤍❤ma anche da Romania!❤💛💙 Buona notte!🌻
Another ED Wood "classic" with the optional nuclear explosion right at the end after Dick is able to roll a 29-ton down a slope right at Bela, who didn't see it coming. Priceless.
Spoiler alert! Bela is knocked over by a giant boulder and falls into a swamp where he gets grabbed by his own octopus and they both then get hit by lightning and then there is an atomic explosion, I'm not sure where exactly. A classic Ed Wood ending.
Ed wood jr he got up n had a go...thats y i love them , ive seen a million films n i watch all of mr woods films to the end ..some ppl do give 2 fux about bela
I lived in that town when this happened. Everyone was very surprised when that nuclear explosion happened. I had forgotten all about it until watching this.
The brief office hallway scene between Janet & Marge was hilariously reenacted in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" (1994) with Juliet Landau & Sarah Jessica Parker.
Tor Johnson was actually Karl Tore Johansson, a Swede and a sometime wrestler who appeared in bit parts from the '30s until 1961. A latex mask of his mug became a bestseller for Halloween in the '60s and '70s. Actor Bela Lugosi was a serious, good-looking actor in Hungary until he got involved in the short-lived 1920 Communist government which was overthrown. Lugosi had to quit Hungary and ended in the U.S., making crap pictures.
He was a hit in the 1920's Broadway production of Dracula. It was so popular they made the movie and kept him as Dracula. He was a good actor but obviously got typecast as a result of his early success.
The heartbreak of a scientist: endless research and experimentation with the finest technical equipment, yet success remains elusive. But one day, perseverance will pay off. Keep trying, Bela. One of the fun things about old movies is seeing the store fronts and window displays, cars, fashion., roads. And most had the final platitude, lol. Original title: "Tor Johnson falls in love." Love ruins everything. Why do mad scientists believe that creating one or two monsters will allow them to conquer the world?
OMG! Golden turkey alert. 🦃Cheesy muzak. 🎶 Low-blow (Tor). The octopus. Lugosi. Tor wrassles Bela, Bela wrassles the octo. 🐙The octo demands and gets a stunt double (or facsimilie). Cardboard sets. Woodian dialogue. The list of cinematic mayhem goes on and on. Can't recall all so must watch again. Come on, gang, "PULL THE STRING". Oops, wrong audience. 😇
"Pull the string!" - I love that scene. Re: the octopus battle, didn't Lugosi himself writhe and squirm in the muddy water with the static octopus prop?
@@dontherealartistunfortunately Glen or Glenda, which I like, has been hijacked as propaganda instead of being enjoyed as simply an absurd movie that's a total hoot....especially sans propaganda.

One of the real jewels in this movie is the Studebaker Champion Starlight t about the 30 minute mark...I'd love to find one still in that condition today...And for those who weren't around at that time, the Nash four door sedan used by the detectives was a common choice in the mid 50's...
Always And forever The Best Dracula I did see a made for TV movie one time in the 80 s starring Christopher bernau. That was really quite good he played a role on one of The soaps for several years I think it was called guiding light
When Ed hit the beach during WW2 he was wearing women's underwear. He didn't care if he was killed, but not merely wounded. Embarrassed ? Umm, no way. I wouldn't care either way. Somebody get this crap off of me.
How is the Snow Maiden different from other girls? Snegurochka is an initially frozen and subsequently revived dead girl who is very afraid of the Sun! Who fears the sun the most?
Bela Lugosi looks really skinny and gaunt in this movie. When he worked with Ed Wood, Lugosi was very poor and probably had little money for food because of his drug problem.
Well, the "plot" is twisted as Hell, the characters are puppets of the absurd and the climax (last 14 minutes) should be analyzed in film faculties as the most stupid ever done in the History of cinema. Only good thing is Lugosi, how he is shot with some kind of mythical fascination by mr. Ed Wood...
_Aww, my dearest Helen from my heart! There are two versions of The same movie...this one is the original movie in B&W...and the other is the colorized version...that's why CCC posted the very same movie twice...they use tô make it now with old movies tô give us an option of choice...! I hope you enjoy this old amazing movie from 68 years ago, because it'S a great one indeed! God bless you always, my dearest Helen from my heart!_ 🤩🤩🤗🤗
Not too bad. Not crazy enough. I could say pretty generic. Can't compete with the "classic Universal Monsters" and such, but it's pretty ok in my book.
