East Durham College runs its Animal Care courses on the beautiful Houghall Campus, on the outskirts of Durham City Centre. The centre at Houghall is fully equipped with all the latest technology and facilities, and leads the way as a renowned land based learning centre. The students who are doing animal care training courses are able to make the most of a specialist small-animal care unit, labs, stables and working farm with large animals such as cows, horses, sheep and pigs.
There are a wide range of modules on the courses ranging from animal health and biology to animal handling, feeding and behaviour. There are many qualifications available such as the animal care diploma level 2, animal management extended diploma level 3 and subsidiary diploma level 3. There are specialist canine courses such as the dog agility foundation course and dog grooming foundation. For a more broad qualification, there is the land based foundation studies course, skills for working life (entry 2) land based foundation diploma, the Prince's Trust team programme, and the Work Based Land Based Operations Diploma Level 1. There is even the Falconry and Owl Beginners Course which is suitable for people who are thinking about starting falconry or wishing to keep raptors and will give you the opportunity to hold, fly and learn about owls and falcons.
These courses are available as part time options, full time and apprenticeships and there are wide range of part time animal care courses available. The modules covered in courses range from animal health and biology to animal handling, feeding and behaviour. There are a number of work placements that are available, students in the past have spent their time at veterinary practices, the RSPCA, on farms helping with lambing, The College has even had students on placements at a wildlife conservation centre in the USA.
Many students who embark on one of our Animal Care courses do so to pursue a career in a wide range of animal care roles. Some examples are as a veterinary nurse, RSPCA officer, police dog handler or working at a kennels, cattery or pet shop.
Our courses are also a great route in higher education and you may want to consider degree programmes such as animal management, animal science, zoology and veterinary nursing.
Most of the courses are taught through a combination of practical skills, scientific work, orals, lectures and tutorials and the modules are continually assessed by practical, written and oral assessments.
