I was expecting another GHB tour but I found your presentation refreshing. My day job is 31 miles towards the country in one direction while my night job is 18 miles towards the city in the other direction. On one day a week I'll do both jobs which makes it a 90 mile round trip. Such is life. Worst case scenario would be an EMP due to a first strike. I guess I might be walking. However, I'm actually considering putting a folding bike in my car trunk because I'm no spring chicken & I want to get home asap. I've been paying closer attention to possible stealth camping spots just in case I needed to hold up for the night & I'm checking out possible areas where I can fill up on water. Your video has ensured me that I'm on the right track because thinking things through is just as important as what you store in your bag. Thank you.

Appreciate this! As a woman I am so thankful I was prepared. During my 1hr commute yesterday morning, traffic backed up in a rural area for over an hour due to flooding. Suddenly I had car issues and had to pull over. Due to the traffic jam it would have taken forever for my husband or a tow truck to get to me. But I mapped a route to the closest business which was a high school, grabbed my small get-home bag and hiked for 10 minutes so that my husband could take back roads to pick me up. ❤ The school happened to be going through a power outage so having my gear like, water, flashlight, battery backup and even a small fan was helpful!

Living in Texas and the only thing I ever needed was a life preserver, floods happen, keep a vest life preserver behind my seat with first aid kit & water filter in pockets, knife on shoulder strap and strobe of other shoulder strap.

I used to walk a lot. I used to bicycle a lot. Now after retiring I've started rucking again while walking the dog. I'm doing about a thousand miles a year, all weather, with a pack in almost rural Iowa. Seen wind chills to -40, heat indexes to 115. Right on, lots of good content. Find out how far and how fast you can travel with minimum gear. Young kid, 20 miles, just a lunch. A relatively healthy adult without a heavy pack moving in all but killing weather can make 25 miles in ten hours. Killing weather, you may be better served staying with the vehicle. Back country may look faster, but unless it has well marked trails could easily take twice as long and leave your corpse in the woods.

PhilD, you make some good points. Clearly more succinct than some of mine. While I was nothing special as a kid, me and my buddy had the right mindset (Be smart. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Don’t give up). Meant to pass that on to others in the vid. As well, it ain’t about the gear. Good gear can help, but getting home is 95% mental and 5% gear. Keep ruckin’!

A 20 mile walk sounds worse than it actually is.

I agree, humans still walk several miles a day all over Africa and Asia. Anyone with a capability of walking without a mechanical aid should easily be able to manage 20 miles over several hours.

I think in a case like this I may have had a short rest/sleep in the car before setting out, especially if close to dark. Also if you were missing for a while and folks are at home waiting for you, I would stick to my usual route home just in case someone came looking for me.

Um, ya…Not sure I agree with completely ignoring the kindness of strangers. I guess that your comment was tongue in cheek, but if I can save my walking a couple of miles by riding in the bed of someone’s truck in the direction I want to go, I’ll do it. Not saying that is the solution for everyone, but there are tactful ways to walk up to a house and respectfully ask to have someone call a phone number to come pick you up. Assuming this isn’t the zombie apocalypse, plenty of people will try to show you a little understanding to get you home. Just my $ .02.
