Lots of questions can surface about a Stone Age EDC, but bottomline Stone Age people carried cutting tools with different purposes. Some were for slicing, cutting, scoring, chopping, scrapping, hunting and drilling. An exact EDC is hard to fathom, as people had different preferences and needs, however maybe my stone age EDC Kit/Pouch can shed some light on the subject!

With Ötzi the Iceman, we know what at least one man carried, when he was out on his last journey. A axe (copper head) a chert knife, 14 arrows (2 finished with stone points and 12 unfinished) a spare bowstring, a pice of antler a unfinished bow, mushrooms to expel parasitic worms, a few tools stones (scraper, a small flake and a borer) and a fire starting kit consisting of flint, pyrite, tinder, and various plants.

@CaptainPupu
@CaptainPupu 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, but he was German/austrian. Ofc he had a copper axe head. I bet he had a Bosch power drill too. 😂 All in all, ancient ppl probably carried some kind of weapon/ spear with them, flint for fire, mushroom ( forgot the species) that can carry and keep embers for hours, probably a waterskin too and a power bank to charge their GoPro.

In the timeline of lithics Otzi is relatively new. All items found on his person are extremely important and provide insight into that timeframe. However, it’s important to step out of the Otzi time and understand that our usage of tools, stone tools extended almost 3 million years ago. Otzi was just over 5,000 years ago…a good reference, but not the 100% answer!

@@nickcasolino8903 You're right. That was my little joke. There have been more than a few DNA studies of his genealogy. The first in 2012 said he's Sardinian, then another one later concluded he's from Turkey, and another saying he's Corsican. It's reasonable to assume his ancestors were Southern European.

Subjects like this are pretty fascinating. I speculate that a nomadic hunter/gatherer would have carried as much as they could reasonably carry without being encumbered. They could not guarantee any resources they found would be available later in their journey so they would carry some of what they might find useful. Medicinal plants, a moderate sized flint node to process into more tools, whatever small tools they've already made from stone or bone, pieces of hardwood they found they are processing into new tools, decent tinder, pine pitch, whatever harvested food they didn't immediately eat... I can only imagine what it'd be like to have your entire lifes belongings with you at any given moment.

right on Don... no bells or whistles ancient mans daily kinda possibles pouch was to me a small tool kit that I can use to sharpen my bifaces or maybe replace something that snapped or use a cutter for whatever and have a couple of roughed out blanks as well.the ancients I think used most stone tools almost like a one time use then tossed unless they could touch it up . They put more work I believe into the wooden aspects of tools because they could quickly knap out a point or blade but arrows or handles for awls axes knives took considerably more time and effort to make .

How long do these blades last you and how long do you estimate a stone age person would keep their blade, or how often would the early man need to make knives. I understand arrow and spear tips would often break and need repair/replacement. Was the "normal" knife last a day, week, month and what does the record say from columbian contact say? Any guesses?
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks 10 месяцев назад
Great question. I think there could be any number of reasons. I have some knives that are ten years old, however it’s only ten years old because I have so many and use them in different intervals extending its life. I imagine in the Stone Age…about three months. I say this because stone after its use gets dull and needs to be sharpened. Every time you sharpen it, the knife slowly gets smaller. It’s an interesting when you think about it, but its longevity is only based on its usage.
@ludohecks5420
@ludohecks5420 10 месяцев назад
The answer would be: depends on the original size. You can probably start from a spear blade, then finish it with an arrow head with a lot of between

Cool idea, didn't realize there were so many different types of "hand axes" or whatever you would call the stone blades you're carrying. Interesting that even with something as simple as a flaked stone blade, there are many different types with different applications.

@JAB671
@JAB671 10 месяцев назад
The earliest stone tools weren't even necessarily made from flakes. Pebble choppers were not flake tools but modified cores. Basically they were rocks with an edge - not necessarily a all that sharp an edge - on them and a back that would fit the user's hand. Of course wood, etc. doesn't often survive but these earliest tools were probably not hafted but were held in the hand. Some theories are that, when people started intentionally modifying rock to make them, the users ground the edge in by rubbing the stone/tool on sandstone or other abrasive surface. Making flaked tools rather than core tools was an advance in technology that allowed a relatively wide variety of tools to be made and the variety grew as time went on and tool styles changed
