This proves when Eddie’s voice was at his peak, he could really blow! Most people don’t know that this song came about from producers appeasing Eddie. He complained about the music direction the Temps took doing psychedelic sounding music and not doing ballads. This song was especially crafted, written and produced so Eddie could sing his ballad. Smart man.
@@MsBj-mo3zy I read that on Eddie Kendrick’s website. Not sure if its still available though. Here’s another bit of trivia: Eddie did NOT want to leave the Temps. He wanted to do a solo LP and still be with the group. Motown rejected that idea. By then he was havin issues with Otis, the direction of the group etc so the LP “All By Myself” ended up being his first solo effort.
@@ghanasoul I know Eddie didn’t like the direction the group was heading in. I don’t think I knew about trouble with Otis. What I do know is his tone was so smooth, his voice was beyond amazing and I think he was the best!
So my sisters two years older bought this album ‘Sky is the Limit.’ When she brought it home and we heard this song, it took the Temps to another level. Eddie sings the song so plainly that you can hear all the lyrics and we would sing along. Back then summers were long and hot no air conditioners, living on a dirt road with the locusts crying in the woods across the street. You had kool aid to quench your thirst. Nevertheless that record player was always dependable and the Airline record record player with the two speakers that would separate about 10 feet apart was pushing out the sound. The Temptations were household name and sadly when David left, we sure couldn’t lose Eddie. This song although beautifully written and sung by one the great pioneer falsetto of our time, was a departing song for Eddie.. And less not forget Paul Williams with that great lead in giving this song a special recipe for greatness. Well the dirt roads were all paved now and the woods are gone, but the memories of those hot summers days were more bearable with the Temptations. And this song is right up there with what’s going on as one the greatest song Norman Whitfield ever produced. Still great 50 years later July 1971- July 2021 LB
