Eddie Redmayne? Michael Keaton? Bradley Cooper? Steve Carrell? Benedict Cumberbatch? This is not a super clear-cut category in the 87th Academy Awards, but there is certainly a favorite. What is the Academy's relationship with "old favorites" vs acting mainstays who've never been nominated for an Oscar? What does it mean this year?
Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Classic Movies), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap, Lonoleum Knife), and William Bibbani (Crave Online) break it down.

Top 3 would be: Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler was by far the best. Ralph Fiennes for The Grand Budapest Hotel made the movie what is was more so than the screenplay (which got nominated). Channing Tatum for Foxcatcher was the best out of the three main actors and didn't get a nomination. That fact that none of those performances were nominated says a lot about the Academy.

Miles Teller was also great in Whiplash

What's that 'a lot' which it supposedly says about the Academy?
@Stuie299

Well usually they nominate at least one of my favorite performances. Something I can get behind even if it has no chance of winning. Plus there are a lot of other snubs like Gone Girl for adapted screenplay and also some generally bad nominations. Its almost like they've gone from being mostly out of it to completely out of it.

I think the subtleties of Ralph Fiennes in GBH should put him up there...

The best actor of the bunch with the best performance of the bunch doesn't even get a nomination. Because reasons.

I think it's a travesty that Rosamund Pike isn't winning best actress. Julianne Moore has been looked over by the Academy too often, and deserves an oscar, but I wish it were another year that they were going to give her the "here's one for all of the times you should've gotten it" award. As far as best performance goes, the subtlety of Rosamund Pike's was both chilling, and astoundingly good.

I can't have a lot of respect for an actor who is type casted like Michael Keaton. Eddie Redmayne put in A LOT more work in to his role than Keaton did and that is why he truly deserved the award.

Since Gyllenhaal got snubbed I am rooting for Cumberbatch, he gave a great performance though it would also be ok if Keaton won.

I have spent the last six weeks pondering about the Academy Awards trying to come up with a rational reason why certain contenders weren't nominated. Many disappointing omissions (Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawer and Jessica Chastain - A Most Violent Year in particular). But arguably the biggest and most surprising one was David Oyelowo for Selma. He fitted the Oscar checklist and seemed set to get his first nomination. Finally after all this time I have a logical answer for why he was snubbed (It's nothing to do with racism). Instead it is simply because if they had nominated Oyelowo over Cooper (The surprise nominee) then all five actors would have been first-time nominees. Now while that may sound silly initially, if you look back throughout the history of the Oscars, every single year since 1934 there has been at least one nominee who was previously nominated for an Academy Award (In the past 25 years it averages at least 2-3 of the nominees have been nominated previously). It is simply an Oscar tradition much like the general rule that in order a film to win Best Picture it must have a Best Film Editing nomination (since 1981 at least)

This was the only Oscar I was predicting / rooting for. Eddie Redmayne was phenomenal!

Redmayne will win, Gyellenhal was the best performance period but of the ones nominated I think Carrell and Cooper had the best perfomances Birdman was the best movie.

Matthew McConaughey continued to build on his run and was sensational in Interstellar. I think he showed range and commitment to a script that had some flaws and he managed to pull of an Oscar worthy performance easily in my book, so I think he deserved at least a nomination. I agree in terms of who isn't nominated Gyllenhall should be a contender as well. I also think Ben Affleck did a career best performance in Gone Girl, a really interesting casting choice by Fincher who always delivers in quality of his actor's performances. That said, of the ones nominated, Redmayne is the safe bet and the one to win, yet I wouldn't mind seeing Carrell or Keaton get it. Cooper's time will come. If I could give it to anyone, it'd be Affleck for Gone Girl or McConaughey for Interstellar

People who deserve to be there instead of Bradley Cooper: Miles Teller, Oyelowo, Gyllenhaal, Andy Serkins. I´m sure I can think of more if I try to remember. American Sniper is also the owrst film of the bunch. I´m glad that at least they won´t win. My favorite film is Whiplash btw.

I hope Keaton gets it. Redmayne was really good, but the performance and the movie in general was so oscar-bait it was distracting.

Fiennes should've got nominated for The Grand Budapest Hotel. I'm sorry, but no matter how political relevant Alan Turing or Chris Kyle are as people, Fiennes acting performance stands out in a stylistic film and delivers one of the best comic performances in the last 10 years.

No. The one that should be replaced is Bradley Cooper. Same goes for the film itself, American Sniper. Jake and Nightcrawler are better. Or even Gone Girl and a few others.

benedict's performance was so monotone and paint by numbers, it was just a matter of time before he'd get an undeserving oscar nom for such an oscar boner-inducing movie
@sanyrub

kate kolman It was restrained, which is different. I agree the film is a little by the numbers (still good anyway) but his performance is amazing, he commands the screen. Brilliant actor. We´ll have to see more roles from everyone, but I really think he is better than Bradley Cooper. I don´t think he could have done Benedict´s role in that film for example.

I'll be happy if Keaton or Redmayne win. I don't think Cumberbatch or Carell stand a chance (I do love both actors). As much as I love Bradley Cooper, I do not want him to win and I honestly liked his performance more in Guardians of the Galaxy. If he does win, I will not be happy. Gyllenhaal and Oyelowo should have been nominated.
