I would agree but add that I believe Ace when he says that if he hadn't left he would have killed himself. Remember, Ace joined a slick, black leather heavy rock band and was suddenly playing "Shandi" and "Dark Light". I personally love both Unmasked and The Elder but that was a far cry from Dressed to Kill. Even Paul admits that from about 1978 to 1982 they were all a little full of themselves. At least Ace had a decent solo career. I also believe that Paul and Gene thought they would have to "help" Ace with his Solo album - that without help was the best selling, hardest rock album of the four. Paul's sounded like a Kiss album (minus the ballads), Gene's was a train wreck, and Peter's was just the wrong feel for Kiss. Peter proved over and over in his career that he just musically didn't get the Kiss fan. Listen to the demo for "Dirty Livin"" or "Beck" (Beth), then listen to what was released by Kiss. Peter just didn't get it. It's no real surprise that he just didn't sell records. But still has this arrogance to say that he feels like he's "owed something".

Failures??? How about Unmasked? The Elder? Drug problems or not, Paul and Gene were exerting more control and they both jumped ship before they looked like buffoons being in that band. First, their audience turned into 8-year olds, then by '79 they were actually getting booed on the Dynasty "Disco" tour. Peter complained about their new musical direction the most because he had no say otherwise. He was just the drummer who might get to sing now and then. Ace was already paving his own solo path so he didn't care, it was just a gig. No wonder they both got high all the time, to escape the embarrassment of being in a band that got kids beat up at school for wearkng a KISS t-shirt. It was really that cheese ball Phantom Of The Park movie when the band started cracking, then the solo albums made it worse because it created a competition between them. Paul and Gene like to say that they weren't team players, but they were if they obeyed them. They always saw themselves as the band leaders because they knew each other first and found those guys later through ads and auditions, but KISS was more of an equal group effort in the beginning. Nobody was really in charge except for Bill Aucoin.

The front half of the audience was booing and heckling after they played "I Was Made For Loving You", then Paul said something like "Aw, c'mawn! We're just tryin' to have a rock and roll pah-tay! Wooh hoo!"

No Paul and Gene didn't MAKE Peter a multi millionare. The original band coming together and putting the make up back on lead to the FANS making them multi millionares again. The two jews were not doing so well at the time and KNEW the reunion was going to make them massive amounts of money that would not have EVER been made had Ace and Peter not come back. So this shit that Paul and Gene were so gracious by "allowing" them to make a few million each compared to the $100 million + is nothing but horseshit. They always say how they did just fine without them. If thats the case then why didn't they stop wearing the make-up after the farewell tour and go back to the "Carnival of Souls" lineup? Could it be that nobody would have given a shit about them? If not for Ace and Peter and the whole reunion thing Gene and Paul would have NEVER made the hundreds of millions and they knew that. They were not a platinum selling band and couldn't fill big arenas. The 96' tour brought them right back to where they were in 77' and it's because of Ace and Peter. Drugs and all.

Peter answer that question himself. To him, rock and roll is one long party. It's not about being in the office. Not about business. And if you want to just party, then you lose. And as another commenter here said, they thought they were getting out when the getting was good. They thought Kiss was over. They both were greedy and made a terrible decision and they whined about it later.

Was in a band at the time and my band mates went with me to one of the shows. Before the show my drummer was talking about how bad Peter was, I was ready to fight. During the show he pointed out the drum triggers to me, Pete was hardly touching the skins. I was devastated. Seriously, if you've never heard The Warning check them out. Three sisters from Mexico.

Peter Criss according to Lydia C is a terminal whinger, has an unbelievable, tragi-comic right self entitlement and acomplete liar. Criss was so drug addled from 1977 - 86 that he couldn't remember any stories correctly. 1979 - he only contributed one song on DYNASTY. The song Dirty Livin,' clearly left over from his then poorly selling Solo album. Heroin - while Criss's producer of choice Vini Poncia and the other band members worked on DYNASTY he was snorting heroin in France. C riss then takes part in the mediocre to poor ticket selling Dynasty tour and deliberately sabotages KISS live performances.

Count Von D the reunion tour wold have been as successful with Eric Singer in makeup and Frehley. Criss was very, very fortunate he was included.

Ok, for starters I saw Kiss in the 80's and it was a far cry from what they were in the 70's and what they would become with the return of Ace and Peter. Kept it limping along for 15 years is a better description. I saw those concerts with maybe 5,000 fans not the 20,000 + of the 70's and the reunion. and one could argue that if they had let it die off with leaving of the original members it would have generated an even a bigger response from the fans. No, they owe Ace and Peter a great deal and keep in mind with their current lineup of Pretend Peter and Fake Ace they still do a show with most of the songs from the Ace and Peter era.

Peter had always been a very average drummer. Just back in the day, he had the swagger and the attitude! He also had the means to become a great drummer, but unfortunately after Kiss, that’s what he lived off of. I’m Peter Criss, the Catman, but I never practiced to hone my skills or get any better! Something else that was eye opening in Paul’s book is that, for the most part, he controls every aspect of KISS. Even Eddie Trunk has said this in other interviews.

Eric Carr was a breath of fresh air - imagine that dude as the original drummer. Those albums would sound SOOO much better. Anton made them sound better on every tune he recorded for them! I play drums and don’t claim to be an expert let’s make that clear. Peter won the lottery and should have respected that... He and Steven Adler are two peas in a pod... piss it all away!

Tough call for Paul & Gene to make, do the fair logical thing according to the values and ethics of our culture which any psychologist could predict would result in more feuding, bitterness, etc or just give Ace & Peter a near equal split just to keep the original 4 together in spite of Ace's descent back into addiction and Peter's never ending complaining and unpleasantness. I saw an interview during the reunion tour where clearly, Peter was irritated because more attention was being given to Paul & Gene and to his credit, Paul repeatedly tried to direct the interviewer towards Peter by physically nudging Peter to the front & by asking Peter answer whatever the interviewer was asking Paul. I have no doubt Paul really did try to keep the original 4 together but it's hard to deal with people who let their emotions and insecurities get in the way of being fair & more self-aware.

Yes, technically. He played great from the first record through Love Gun. After that, he seemed to lose his energy. I don’t know if that was drug or injury related, or both, but if you look at videos of Criss after 1977, he wasn’t the same.

Not when your bandmates are making much more than that. If you or anyone else had been in his shoes, they would've done the same. And if not, then you are sucker for letting them screw you over.
