I like some of the Hagar stuff. But the Roth era is just so much cooler. Van Halen felt more vital and interesting in that era. More dangerous. With Hagar, they became a little more like Jock Rock. The band felt like a lot of other bands from the era. That's not all Sammy's fault. Eddie wrote a lot of the music. But even listening to 1984 and 5150 back to back? It's quite the contrast.
When Hagar joined VH, I wished they’d done some Montrose tunes (Space Station #5, Rock the Nation, Bad Motor Scooter, etc). That was my favorite Hagar era, and it would’ve sounded awesome with the VH treatment.
Eddie Trunk is nuts. I don't think Sammy Hagar is a better singer than Dave. I think Dave has a much more unique, bluesy, textured voice. There are tons of people that can sing in that high voice like Sammy. I don't know anyone that sounds like Dave, he's unique. Trunk is way off.
Roth’s raspy bluesy storytelling voice is the perfect blend to Edward’s brown sound, that matches the attitude of VH music, contrasted by Eddie’s and Michael’s vocal harmonies. It’s the formula that worked along with Roth’s originality and signature scream. Hagar may sing at a certain range , but in no way does that make a vocalist better. Roth IS the voice and PERSONALITY in the music, imbedded in people’s minds.
Granted Dave is great in the records and tge harmonies him and Micheal Antony had were incredible Roth live however never a great singer but with Sammy you get the best of both worlds fantastic on the records and just as fantastic live
This is funny! Stone & Digital Dave on their show always expose Eddie Trunk as a Sammy Hagar Puppet! Good you David Lee Roth singing those lame Bubble Gum Love songs that Hagar and Decrepit. Hagar could not sing the Roth songs as well as Dave. No wants to hear the Hagar silly love songs stuff!!
