In this episode, we have Eddie Van Halen and Michael Anthony. At the time of this interview in 1989, Van Halen was in Japan promoting their OU812 tour and record.. In the interview, Van Halen talks about how Eddie wants to be remembered when he dies, David Lee Roth and Ted Templeman, their album OU812, why Eddie is still not 100% sober, and so much more.
We have also added a bonus interview with Eddie alone from 1985.

I don't know how many times I've listened to that ascending harmonic run in the song Atomic Punk. The one after the solo and break into the last verse. (Around 2:11 mark in the song.) And it still blows me away when I hear it. How does a human come up with something like that?????

Absolutely- from the first day I heard eruption in 1978 to now, it was clear to me that this was a new universe of musicianship. Defined the guitar itself, defined the tone, refined the Floyd rose, patents, defined a new frenetic style of playing….and I ain’t even got to composing yet.

Met Eddie, Alex, Michael and Sammy during 1986 after i had won backstage passes from a radio contest for a show that was here in southwest Virginia at the time. I hung out with them for about an hour and it was a night i will never ever forget. Eddie was super cool and displayed no rockstar ego at all. He even let me strap on his iconic frankenstrat and taught me a few chords to the song panama. I still have a box full of van halen t-shirts, hats, e.v.h guitar picks and several photographs that i can look back upon and remember that incredible summer night many years ago. It was obvious that those guys truly enjoyed every single minute of what they did, and it was a thrill just to be around that kind of vibe if only for a little while

I love these EVH stories of his generosity and kindness That was a once in a lifetime opportunity you enjoyed I know Eddie had such a good heart. There is consistency in hearing so many people speak so well of meeting him. I remember a photo of a visit he had with a young man who was in a wheelchair and Eddie was such a compassionate gentleman towards him. Gave the disabled fan so much dignity and respect

Man when he said “When I’m dead and gone…” I couldn’t help but tear up. I’ve never been one to show any emotion when someone I don’t know passes, but when Ed passed it truly took the wind out of my sails. He’s the reason why I’ve been a guitar player for over 35 years….RIP Mr.Van Halen!

Yeah profoundsinger, that was eerie. I remember the exact time, place and how I learned that Ed was gone, dead, not with us (me) anymore. I was on the phone with my cousin bullshitting and all of a sudden he said "wait" and I heard the squabble of the radio coming from his truck, he said ""Eddie Van Halen just died" ( I HATE when people call him "Eddie", and I have no clue why, but to me he is "Ed" or "Edward") and I thought he was breakin my balls, so I turned up my radio and -Boom- It was the first thing I heard. I don`t know how or when, but I was suddenly on the shoulder of the road, just staring at nothing and feeling numb. I shed no tears, never have (WTF?) just this hole in my gut that will always be there. I started playing in 1979-80. And 3 guys are the reason for that. #1 Joe Walsh, #2+3, Ed and Jimmy. But it was Ed that forced me to begin playing 4 to 6 hrs. a day, wearing heavy silver or steel rings on every finger drilling modes and picking patterns till my arms were numb and locked up. You hear that Ed, you sonofabitch!!! Dude he referred to death and his legacy about four times. Surreal my brother guitarist. Hey man, take care and I am sorry if my comment went on so long. I kinda felt blindsided or some shit. Cheers.

The solo interview with Lisa is the most gripping and vulnerable interview with EVH I have ever heard. Makes me miss hom even more. I thank God I was able to see Van Halen live at keast 11 times often standing having Eddie perform his solos just feet in front of me. Eddie is the GOAT. A humble musical genius.

I’ve always said - Ed was this creative sensitive soul set loose in a macho rock world he never made… The most beautiful part of this video is the Lisa Robinson interview with Ed where Ed said of Alex -‘my brother once told me - don’t worry about jumping around. Listen to the audience. They cheer the LOUDEST when you stand there and JUST PLAY’..😔

After reading about how badly Eddie treated Michael over the years (starting before Sammy arrived), I wonder how Michael was able to take the high road for so many years. And yes, I realize it would take a LOT to convince me to leave the Van Halen life, I get it! Michael Anthony is definitely a stand-up dude.

Yet in this first interview in 1988 here with ED and Mike together they sounded to me like band EQUALS. A DEMOCRATIC band. Ed wasn't sounding dictatorial over Mike in this interview to me at all. At that time things were going GREAT between them. They both sounded like down to earth purist musicians who were BOTH in it for the MUSIC,,,,Not so much the Fame & the Money like Dave was ...In this interview in 1988 it sounds like ED and MIKE got on very well in the band because they had the same vision for it & they worked together well....I believe it was only LATER when there came the split between Sammy & Eddie that there became problems with band social politics with people taking sides.....

Michael was just as important to that band as everyone else. Good Bass players never get the respect they deserve. Stu Hamm and Joe Satriani is a prime example. Not that Joe purposefully dissed Stu but the untrained ear fan of Satch never considered how much Stu played a role in the groove. It's an unsung road for pocket bass players yet they just perform.

"Why do you think you get those noises out of the guitar that nobody else has?" EVH - "Anger." And that's Eddie in a nutshell. All the early Van Halen albums had a real "anger" in the guitar sound. You can't listen to Unchained or Mean Streets and not hear it. God I miss that guy. The greatest musician of my generation.

I have read dozens of Eddie interviews and listened to his appearances on Rockline and other radio and tv shows but I think that interview with him by himself might be the best look inside what made him tick that I have heard. The interviewer masterfully got him to be very open and vulnerable and he told his truth. He was an introvert and I think the drugs and alcohol were his way of settling his nerves to go out into the world of extroverts with his unique guitar skills to make and perform his music. But over time it had a detrimental effect on him as it does on anyone. I love that you posted this outstanding bit of rock journalism! Thank you!

So this clears up something I had suspected for a while. at 17:54. Ed confirms that the death of his father convinced he and Alex that they needed to clean up their lifestyle as their father was a total alcoholic. And Alex legitimately has stayed sober ever since. But Ed? Funny story: The day after EVH passed away, a co-worker came to my office and said, "Bro, you'll never believe this. My mom just sent this to me. Here's a photo of my Grandpa and EVH." He flipped his phone around and sure enough there's a polaroid photo of an older guy and EVH. Both are holding cans of Miller Lite. This was around 1987. It was after 5150 but before OU812 tour. The way the story went. EVH was passing through Texas and stopped off to say hello to an old childhood friend. This friend lived next door to my co-workers grandparents. So a semi-party is happening over at the house and someone snapped the photo. Allegedly, when EVH was given a beer he said, "I just got out of rehab so I'm not supposed to drink," to which he and everyone else laughed. And here we are in this interview in 1988 and he confirms he's still drinking beer before a show. But such an odd story of EVH passing through Lancaster Texas, of all places.

I loved this interview!!!! It really let you into the mind and the personal outlook of Eddie Van Halen!!! He was so humble about his ability and his love for guitar!!! He was the single person that inspired me to buy a guitar and learn how to play!!! I have never achieved the level of greatness that he achieved, but I have been in numerous bands and have played guitar my entire life because of him!!!! I don't think he ever realized how many people's lives he touched with his music!!!! I got to meet him at a"meet and greet" in 1984 at a concert in Hollywood, Florida. It was very rushed as there was a lot of fans trying to get pictures and autographs, but he was very gracious and he even signed a guitar pick that I managed to catch, and my short interaction with him however brief, changed my life!!!! I will be eternally grateful for that moment in my life!!!!! I don't think there will ever be another guitar player like him, ever!!! He was one of a kind!!!! Thank you Eddie!!!!!

He doesnt sound like himself on quite a few different things, finish what ya started is a huge departure from what he usually did, none of his trademarks exist in that. When its love is another example, yea the overbend in it could be a giveaway but its not his usual guitar sound or approach to playing you heard very often

I was sixteen years old when the album came out that summer. My first job working at a horse stable Ranch. Once a year they would have horse jump competitions. That week the album came out. I was working those shows. I remember going on a Wednesday and buying the tape. And listening to it on my lunch breaks and all during the summer. Wow time does go by very fast. Too bad you don't realize that when you're younger

When you hear the solo interview with Eddie and you compile all the information and other interviews of other band members and books about Van Halen, you really get a pretty solid profile on everyone. It all makes sense. Sammy has always had a clear take on so many things and he sites the new manager coming in as the reason they threw him out of the band, he said it with him own mouth in several interviews. The new manager comes in and starts looking for allies, he targets Eddie and begins sowing all this garbage into him the next thing you hear out of the management camp is "Eddie wants his band back". Huh? Once Sammy was gone, the wheels really fell off, next came the resentment, the regret, the hard feelings, the harsh words, the desperation, the rebound chick, the new singer, followed by the reunion tour and by time, Eddie had a HUGE dark cloud over his head. He's a great guy but he was vulnerable and to someone looking to take advantage of the band, he was the target, sowing into his EGO and spreading discontent was the way in. Both Sammy and Michael have said it, the manager was the devil and Eddie was his target.

This was Ray Daniels ? ….I don’t know much about him though, I know he managed RUSH for years successfully and Extreme but possibly his management might have caused inter band problems with VH….I know he was an in law with Alex which might have complicated matters. I know he was brought into the picture because Ed Leffner passed away. When Ed Leffner was manager it seemed more like ‘all for one and one for all’ among the band but after he passed on and was replaced by Ray Daniels possibly it was more -‘this guy in the band is doing over this guy’ or something ? It became more about ‘evening up power imbalances’ (real or imagined)..People said he worked well for Rush but that VH was just the wrong environment for him. I just don’t know what happened, I think he even wrote comments in the Brad Tolinski book ERUPTION about Ed which sounded a bit critical. TheCountofToulouse , are you are saying that as a manager he destroyed the trust between Eddie and Sammy ?

@@walterevans2118 I'm not 'trying' to say it, I AM saying it and I'm saying it because SAMMY said it. The reason Daniels had no issues with Rush was because Rush was hard to have issues with, it was a power trio and all the power dynamics were in stone. A phrase like "Eddie wants his band back" doesn't originate out of thin air, especially when you hear how HAPPY he was in this interview, how happy he was with the band, the direction all of it. Lefler dies and suddenly there are HUGE issues? When Daniels met with the band, he started coming up with all these dip shit ideas and Sammy was saying no to all of them. It was clear from the onset who he had to get out of the way and it was also clear who he was going to use to do it. Now do I think that HE though all his meddling would get Sammy OUT of the band? No. I think he was just trying to side with the people that liked HIS ideas and rearrange or create (more like) a power struggle where Sammy is treated like a hired gun in "EDDIES BAND". If Lefler doesn't die, the band NEVER breaks up, NEVER has a single internal strife issue and Eddie never goes through that dark phases.

@@TheCountofToulouse It does seem strange that the interviews of the band during Ed Leffner as manager the four members seemed like a gang of FRIENDS with Ed saying things in 1991 like- ‘Sammy and Mike are like my brothers. They really are’ and everyone laughing and joking as a unit and then after Ed Leffner passes on all this politics 🤔you’re saying that the ‘dipshit ideas’ were CREATING the divides and the politics ?

@@TheCountofToulouse Come to think of it, phrases like ‘Eddie wants his band back’ just sounds so UNLIKE Eddie. It was not the kind of slogan HE was likely to say because I always remember in interviews Ed emphasising VH as a BAND….a co-operative enterprise …If you look at the history of his interviews this becomes apparent….Even though Ed was writing the music he would have felt reticent about being called ‘the leader’ of the band. Because that would have made him feel he was turning into DLR….Perhaps Mr. Daniels tried to get Ed to SEE IT as HIS band ….That might explain why on the album VH 3 Ed practically took over so many things on the project with Mike Post in 1998….Ed played many more things, Mike’s contributions on bass were reduced and minimalized …Then Gary Cherone came in and did a good job under difficult circumstances (I thought so anyway)…Then Gary left in 1999..what might be interesting to know is when Gary Cherone left in 1999 did Ray Daniels end his management of VH at the same time Gary left ?

@@walterevans2118 Lefler was like a father figure, he treated the members with such love, reverence and respect, he took all the pressure and shielded his guys from ANYTHING heavy. He let them be a band, free to think about MUSIC and not much else. In fact, the Lefler management period saw the MOST success, the most contentment, the 'good times' and some of the best and well produced music to come out of Van Halen. Eddie flourished under these circumstances, he was non stop laughs and smiles. As soon as Ed was gone, the vultures swept in and that started ALL the darkness, all the resentment, all the pessimism, all the heavy attitudes and all the harsh words and criticism, which was all unfounded.

The reason he was set apart from every one else is his true love of music and never falling into the show biz side and how authentic of a human being he was and a reluctant rock star and guitar god. No matter who the singer was the music was a cathartic and true representation of the man inside and that’s what connects us to him like Jimi Hendrix they reinvented guitar.!! Right before he died he did a magazine cover the last living guitar god that sums it up

Yes, Mike's BASS was always low in the mix in the 1970s & 1980s ....I think with Unlawful Carnal Knowledge 3 years later the Bass mix fader & EQ was finally pushed up so we could hear Mike's propulsive contribution to the RHYTHM. Which really worked well on tracks like Poundcake & Pleasure Dome....

That was a great interview. She was an excellent interviewer.she was able to put him into a corner and get to the meat of the matter. She got him to answer some very personal questions which were fastenating since eddie was a musical genius of sorts. Thanks for sharing this very interesting look into the mind of a gtreat.

I think Ed needed to acknowledge just how much cover tunes helped form their sound. Early on in the club days They formed their sound from cover tunes. By the time we get to Diver Down, they made cover tunes their own. Amazing versions of “pretty woman”, “where have all the good times gone”, “your no good”. “Big bad bill”, “happy trails”……VERY unique

Ive listened to many interviews with Eddie and I can say that he is an original 💯🎸... He has his own sound and style that separates he from all others and i could see me getting lessons from him if money and opportunity aligned to do so.. and no doubt that he wouldn't be straight and narrow about teaching me/you 🎸 lessons, in fact he would show you how to let uou develop your own style of play because like Eddie the guitar becomes part of you and so that makes you stand out from others in your own way and thats what i loved so much from Eddie is that he is not in a competition to be guitar hero and never seen him bad mouth other guitarists and that shows that hes just Eddie van Halen with his own style ❤🎸❤🎸❤ R.I.P AND ALWAYS REMEMBERED

There will be No other to come along and have such a profound impact on the Music Industry , As well as on Not only how Music itself can now be created , but how it can be created with the Guitar as an Instrument ! They had to figure out a way to put on paper exactly what Eddie Was doing , that's where Tablature came to be . His technique will be forever the most copied in all of History . And his accomplishments are far too many to mention here anyway. Thank you Eddie Van Halen

Jimi was no Eddie Van Halen when it comes down to Who Changed Everything About Guitar And Music And The Way The Instrument Can Now Be Played In The Music . Eddie Van Halen is the reason why Tablature was created so they could explain in some way to what Eddie was doing ... I never said there would be nobody after Jimi . I am saying there was none before and there will be none after Edward Van Halen that will have such a overall total impact on music and Guitar the way we know it now to be .

Glad you brought this up. I loved how she challenged him and pushed him to open up. Most interviews with him are very shallow, generic and repetitive. This lady, in a very respectful way, got this reclusive, introverted guy to really talk about himself. Other than EVH's Crossroads that he played here, I loved the end where he goes into where it all comes from. He says he's obsessed and that focuses him to channel into his skill and creativity. He didn't like the word "talent" because it sounds too much like a gift that was handed to him. He's onto something here and I've seen it in my lifetime. People who are extraordinarily good at something have this trait. They put all of their will and drive into doing something to the point that it becomes part of their soul.

There are plenty of stories about other substances being abundantly abused though. 😂 The Steve Harris interview is generic BS, but the second interview from 1985 with Lisa ? is amazing. Eddie must mention 'Source of Infection" 20 times or more in this interview .everytime the interviewer says something that puts their music in a commercial fashion he says well look at Source of infection like it's like something of the first album.

Started playing when I was 13 but then I switched to the drums and I didn't go back to the guitar. but every time I picked up a Guitar I can remember all the stuff that I learned when I was 13 so I said I'm going to teach myself to play guitar. but wait a minute I'm 59 years old? well I'm doing it and it's a lot harder than when I was a kid but being able to play some of Eddie stuff that will give you some incentive to continue. once you start seeing progress it becomes an obsession. I am obsessed with a guitar and I cannot put it down I love it. If you're a kid out there and you're interested in music and you want to learn guitar do it the younger the the easier it is to learn it

I knew once I saw Anthony hanging out with the vanquished Sammy, the end was coming. Anthony was still in the band and they were on hiatus. EVH saw it as traitorous move, hanging out with the enemy. Anthony taking the high road and being positive about his past experiences is a testament on who he is as a person He deserved better outcome with VH.
