EVH and Guitar World present an exclusive preview of Eddie Van Halen's new EVH Wolfgang guitar. For feature videos, guitar lessons, gear reviews and more check out guitarworld.com
In later interviews like 2015ish he started vaping, but unless you go cold turkey you never really quit and there are occasions you lit up the up cigarettes.
@MP 81,16,18 CATS The day that he died, my lead guitarist that totally idolizes Eddie was saying that exact same thing.... I'm far from a doctor... but ... I'd hate to say this but I will.. Smoking imo is the reason that the best guitarist was taken from us way too early.. But what would I know ??? Hearing the news of his passing was the saddest start to my morning since I can remember.. He had a HUGE influence to my life. Probably the biggest because, of the people that I met because of his playing and also what he meant to Pantera. I have a friend that went to 5150 and interviewed him and he had the time of his life meeting Eddie. Check out Jason McNamara's channel of the same name to watch it. Great video... I bought a 5150 III amp a few years ago and I love it. He saved Hard Rock & Metal for many decades I think.. Still does to this day RIP Eddie Van Halen.........................................
Midnights & Mornings..GOD has had a significant part of his tongue removed cancer I believe and yeah his speech has changed obviously. He has stated that the medical advice he received as to 'why' his condition started was probably due to his continuing endless use of putting metal picks in his mouth but Ed's said he's not 100 per cent certain, but again his voice has noticeably changed but who GAF the man is a fucking genius.
5:55 "...the Wolfgang better outlive me..." the prophecy has been fulfilled. Rest in peace. I never knew you, but your music has had such an impact on my life that I feel as if you are a friend. I will be listening to Van Halen until my number's up. There's no other musician alive or dead who has change the world quite like you did Eddie.
Ed coming up on 2 years ago. I just bought a Wolfgang yesterday. He got his wish, heck of a player, heck of a guitar. He left something behind in this world that no other guitarist ever will.
@@wildspowell196 I was in my local Guitar Center today and they have the replica FrankenStrat that Fender made a limited run of. It has everything, the dummy neck pickup, the single volume knob labeled tone, the quarter under the Floyd Rose, etc. I want it sooo bad. They also have a Stealth in the toothpaste green with maple neck. All so good to look at! Congrats on your purchase, do Eddie proud!
I had a aqua music man EVH from Guitar center in LA and a Red one as well as a purple one . I loved the Music man guitars , was skeptical about the Peavey ones . Eddie lives on 🙏
At all American guitar shredding he was. He was also VERY mean spirited. In the last two days I learned about his treatment of Micheal Anthony and the way Micheal was so damn classy in response. Did you know that Ed showed Micheal how to play bass? Never mind that Micheal was already good enough to be asked to join after his band played with Van Halen at a school gym. Eddie could have been a cool dude, he was not. Did you know that when Eddie had that bandanna on his head he was on drugs with sunken cheeks and insane? Too bad he was so messed up as a person. Sammy reached out to them several times with zero response. Van Halen bros are bad blood and now it is history that cannot be patched up like Dave, Sammy and Micheal all tried to do.
@@hyperluminalreality1 as awful as that all was, you have to remember that because Eddie was the frontman for Van Halen, he had immense pressure on him at all times. From what I know Eddie only ever did drugs as a way to focus due to major anxiety he had growing up, and would only ever drink really before concerts to relieve his nerves. Eddie was a man tortured by drug addiction and substance abuse from the moment he set foot on stage until the day he died.
Some people may think that its ugly, but I'm here to tell you that it not only sounds great, it is one of the easiest guitars that I have EVER played. Everything is top notch. Everything that EVH has learned over the years went into this guitar. They did a great job!
Its a marketting gimmick. He named it after wolfgang.. i have no words. It's pickups are wider than normal. But lets be serious.. Eddy still plays a superstrat. Hell the only reason he doesnt play factory Jem's is he has a contract. If jems had existed when he was a teen he wouldnt play anything without ibanez on the headstock
What is with all of the Eddie bashers? What have you assholes ever done? This man is a fucking legend! He's the Elvis of guitar, guitar sound and guitar innovations. Get a life.
Those were good times, Eddie was sober, dlr sounded pretty good on that 2007/08 tour, there were rumblings of them making a new album. Sure, everything that came after was a little underwhelming, but during 2009 there was nothing but anticipation and excitement for the future of Van Halen. I'm grateful I got to see them live in 2007, and then hagar and Michael Anthony a month later. It felt like getting the most complete Van Halen experience possible at the time.
The man takes quality to heart so important to care like he demonstrates it. Who else does this to have a product with his and his family's name on it? Corporate executives take notice. This is what quality truly is in a product. RIP Eddie thank you for your presence, performance, and wisdom.
At the end the one guy says "there's nothing left to do on it..." in reference to the guitar . . . Well I came to the video hoping I'd see Eddie play it . . .
he's fucking lying. Overdrive... you get that from a GOOD amp. IT doesnt need a pedal. Distortion, compression, delay etc.. ALL of which he fucking uses.. you get from pedals
What the hell does it matter if the circuit is in the amp or in a pedal? 5150 has like 5 channels with 100 pedals-worth of electronics. It's all just BS. Amps, pedals, even guitar... it's all electronics. If it sounds good, it's good. That's all that matters.
Legends ,trailblazers, uniqueness, unorthodox. Makes for greatness. He never went bye the books. Did his own thing. Which made him an inventor. Special.
he doesnt do digital but youre completely correct. They use STACKS of marshalls, some custom made. Probably 100k just in amps and a $100k a year tech who does nothing but work on them. But.. he also uses other pedals. hes fucking lying for money
a evh guitar thats my dream guitar was always the striped series frankie for my love of ed n van halen or the 5150 evh.. but after hearing ed talk about this guitar how much work he put into designing it and when he said "this better out live me" he meant like the gibson les paul still around today... THATS what he looks at this as not just a one off addition to the EVH lineup no this is THE EvH lineup the same way gibson has les pauls sgs 335s but the les paul is IT fender has strats teles jaguars, mustangs, jazzmasters all awesome but the STRAT is the guitar... EvH has striped series,5150s, but the Wolfgang is THE guitar!!! , thats what i learnt from ed in this video... god rest your soul edward, and im rocking out to Mammoth WVH that kid is so talented and bringing back rock music to the MASSES! pop and hip-hop cannot kill rock aslong as wolfies rocking and the rest of us guitarists to!!!
Have to say after playing the EVH Wolfgang for almost a year its the guitar I always come back to. Its smaller in stature than most, but the neck is sublime and is extremely fast. Packs power and has so much punch!!! Great guitar!!!
I went to the hollywood guitar center yesterday and they have the platinum room of evh with 4 5150 III full stacks and about 7 wolfgangs. I tried them and they are the best combination that I've ever played. If I could buy it I would.
It goes without saying. He was famous for using the original MXR Phase 90, MXR Flanger and the Echoplex. Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble. A compressor? No. A compressor is generally used for clean, single coil, tones. You get compression from distortion and overdrive.
That's because he had cancer of the throat. That is why he sounds like Marge Simpson. It is so cool when he is sober and away from drugs and booze!!! He sure shows passion and care for his(Eddie) craft!!!!☺😊😁😀 Music and guitars and amps!!!!
Valerie Bertinelli partly divorced him because of his smoking addiction he had mouth cancer and part of his tongue removed because of cancer and yet he still smoking that's why his voice sounds this way he's missing part of his tongue also
This video after lots of research to understand the EVH guitars, literally was the final factor in me buying one. Sure it’s an old video but hearing the effort that goes into the fine tuning of it and his enthusiasm sold me. Not because he’s a salesman for it but it was his guitarist and perfectionist ways that sold it. UPS should be here within 20 minutes.
@@humbug4478 OMG tell me about it! I have never played anything like it! That tone is insane! Even when you turn the volume down, you still keep the gain and get a cleaner sound. I don’t know how the heck he did it. I don’t have a 5150 amp and I heard plugging the EVH directly into the 5150 with no pedals is when you’ll really hear the beauty of the guitar. So I bought a Mooer GE150 amp modeler pedal that has the peavey 5150 version and the EVH 5150 amps. The pedal apparently is almost perfect emulating the real sound. So being inexpensive I figured what the heck. I bypassed my Boss ME80 and went straight into the amp pedal and wore headphones to test the sound. WOW! It has flange, phaser, delay effects etc built in like the real amp and omg it blows my mind and it’s not even a real 5150! Anyway, I got overjoyed there. Sorry about that but let me know what you think of it as you experiment more.
That what you get from smoking, whisky, total freakin awsome guitar playing (all day long), thats the voice you get!!! EDDIE......................YOU THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!
SRNF He's known for using pedals, but he's also known for using them sparingly, for little accents here and there. Especially in the early days. Look at his early, duct taped board. There's a phase 90 for solos, a flanger, and the echo plex. That's about it. He was never pedal crazy. In the later years, when his tone changed, he began using digital delays and a harmonizer to fatten his sound. But, those have been gone for a long time. He's back almost exclusively to a few simple pedals, the Phase 90 being the one used most often for solos.
I'm the same age. Just last year I lost a long time friend to cancer who could never quit smoking. Back in the 70's Yule Brenner who was dying did a commercial where he pleaded with people not to smoke. As powerful as that commercial was it wasn't as powerful as a smoking addiction. RIP.
Cigarettes should be outlawed!!! Everyone is so wrapped up in politics and Covid that we've forgotten the real enemy of the world. :( Far more die each year from cancer from cigarette smoking than Covid will ever cause!!
I think this interview clearly demonstrates ed's sheer genius in the mechanics of self taught guitar building.....no ego...just awesome. (It shows just how much raw talent this gentle soul of a man has.) Chip... what can I say.... beautiful design and amazing detail and craftsmanship. All the best to Ed and Chip and Guitar world. Thanks ....all the best...god bless. Mike.
Eddy, you made the Netherlands so proud. Wij zijn allemaal heel trots op jou en je Indo boys 😁😁🇳🇱🇳🇱. You just go play up there with your friends. Ga jij maar lekker spelen daarboven joh. Het gaat je goed Edje. 😁😁🇳🇱😁🌷😁🇳🇱😁?🇺🇸🇺🇸🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩😁🌷🇳🇱😁🇺🇸🇮🇩
Man, he loved his craft. Really amazing to hear his passion. Unfortunately, I can also hear his gravelly voice here, which you didn't use to hear in his interviews. (Damn you throat cancer). 💗💗💗
used to be. His frankenstrat is the shit. his techniques are the shit. Now he's just an old douchebag hated by his bandmates selling garbage with his son's name(????????????????) on it.
You will all get down on your knees and worship me wanting to be me praising me and loving me and then get your damn asses out and buy my products, my greatness commands it! and the Tone King will be my footstool !
if you can't keep up and understand what he is talking about you should be less snarky. they were on the subject of DISTORTION PEDALS. DIS. TOR. TION. he was referring to not having any distortion pedals in his rig. obviously he has effect pedals, but he doesn't use DISTORTION PEDALS. hope that cleared it up for you.
SYLFan2008 nice try. anybody could have made that list. even if he does use an overdrive pedal, it isn't specifically called a distortion pedal. i don't buy it.
rofl waffle : //nice try. anybody could have made that list.// Uberproaudio.com is not "anybody." Plus, I'm the one with the evidence here, mate. If the link is wrongly stating facts, then maybe EVH should sue them (or already have sued them) for misrepresenting facts, shouldn't he? //if he does use an overdrive pedal, it isn't specifically called a distortion pedal// Yes, he doesn't use a pedal that says "Distortion" on it, but he uses a pedal to generate the "warm distortion tones" (actual product description). Lastly...relax. I like EVH too and he is a great guitar player, but he is trying to sell his product here and is clearly embellishing. You don't have to take this personally.
SYLFan2008 i know even an overdrive pedal distorts the tone, thus can be designated a distortion pedal, but in pedal classification a distortion pedal is heavier than an overdrive pedal. they both distort the tone, yes, but overdrive and distortion are 2 different things in this case.
I've been using & telling other players for a couple decades now that stainless frets are the way to go. Honestly, I do notice a slight change in tone but it's not a worse change, just different and very negligible. And yes, they do feel more slick, like playing on glass but you quickly get used to that. The biggy for me though is that I play alot and I want my frets to last for many years. Heck, when someone who presses really hard plays your guitar with Nickel/Silver frets, you can see little dents immediately. I can quickly change worn strings but worn frets is a much bigger & more experience problem. Cheers!
It's the closest to a solo album that he ever made . He didn't want cover tunes and fought Teddy Templeman . It's one of the reasons that got him to make his own 5150 recording studio . The other reason was the Diver Down album . The third was he noticed Frank Zappa's home recording studio .
Yes he is , I miss him so bad I can't take it , I love Eddie Van Halen & Van Halen as well , my Prayers & condolences & love to him , his family , friends & his band mates & all who love him , I love all musicians , love you Eddie , Rock In Paradise love 💔💔💔💔💔😔😢😭😭💚💜💙💛🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤘🙋😧
@kevinnotevan Ahh M8 !!! I rlly like that nice (but still lean, mean) sound of that recording :( Well thank you for sharing with the rest of the van halen fans LOLZ. but i could rlly use help with finding the record for his preformance in Two and A Half Men, that is one hella solo :D having that for a ringtone would kick some serious ass :) thanks again.
Nicotine is such a strong addiction. It takes over your mind really. Ed had part of his tongue cut out and he is still smoking. It is because he can't stop, it is too hard for him. I know he says that the cancer had nothing to do with smoking, I find that hard to believe.
I heard Eddie in an interview. Saying his tounge Cancer was from a metal pick he held between his teeth in his 5150 studio for years and the cause was E. M. F . In the studio. I'm no doctor so I have no idea .except that s what King Edward Said. FYI he started a cancer research facility in NYC with the doctors who helped his cancer.
His old charvel/boogie bodies neck was nothing like these or the PV wolfgang necks and don't even start me on the body shape of the WG. I really don't like eddie as much as i did because he is a total hypocrite because He said in many past guitar interviews years ago that he would never sell a piece of gear for endorsement. Now look at him.guitars,amps,pickups.picks,strings,pedals,even friggin sneakers!!!! Yeah ed you wont ever sell out! good god!
The guitar looks great, and I love Eddie's tone in particular on all the DLR albums. Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of this guitar matched with Eddie's amp. It sounds like metal clanking around, and lost a lot of the warm, thick, buzzy qualities his tone used to have.
Yeah sure Eddie 'The Brown sound' Was just your guitar plugged straight through an amp .LOL. Trouble is whenever Eddie changes company's suddenly they're the one's that 'finally get it ' and producing the real deal . I Doubt everything he says now. Van Halen fan up until 'Woman and Children first', after that Hmmm ?
I love Eddie Van Halen! My biggest fantasy is for me to interview Eddie and to give him one of his own guitars design for him to play. After he finishes playing, I will ask him how do you like that Chinese made Wolfgang?
Sutty, Ed is one of my favorite guitarists ,and a huge inspiration to me as a guitarist. But he tells peole all kinds of bullshit..not honest..to keep his little secrets so people won`t copy EVERY single thing that he does. Their are a million EVH clones out there, and I am sure he is sick of it, even though it strokes his ego. And he has a HUGE ego, I don`t give a fuck what anyone says, about him being humble and honest . He is NOT humble at all. If you dont agree with him and Alex, your ass is fired. Ask Michael Anthony. What they did to him was cruel and totally uncalled for. Wake up my friend. You must be a young man, at least that is the feeling I get. I grew up with VH when they were at their very best. The Fair Warning tour was an unbelievable show!!! 1981, Madison Square Garden ,N.Y.C. Ed was on fucking FIRE!! Diver Down and 1984 were lame, as you could see they were not totally in to it,DLR was about to quit.
Great that he was so hands on (pun intended) with redesigning the Wolfgang. Not only did he reinvent playing the instrument, he served as an advocate for making it road-proof and more convenient to physically play it. Rest in Power, dude.
I am the first to admit that I am not a big Van Halen fan, I did like them more when Sammy was in the band though. But to listen to EVH pretend like his guitar playing is nothing but him a guitar and all just plugged straight into an amp is comical, what's more funny is to read the comments by his fans defending him saying this. All you have to do is sit down and listen to ANY Van Halen record and it's nothing but one effect after another. Ok maybe he doesn't use a lot of pedals, I will come back to that one, but look at all the knobs on his amps, There's your effects ladies and gentlemen. Some will say that live he isn't using pedals like crazy and yet he still get's those sounds. Umm yeah, have you ever heard of "guitar technician" or a "sound guy"? Those are the guys working OFF STAGE giving his guitars those sounds by changing the knobs on the friggin amps! Back to the pedals now, I recently watched a video of him soloing, from 2017 or 2016, I noticed he sure spent a lot of time looking down and moving his foot on a whole array of pedal assortments. It was a small venue so I bet they didn't have their normal stage gear which meant the sound guys couldn't make the changes, he had to do it. Now just because I don't buy his "just an amp" BS does not mean I don't give him credit for being one of the top 5 rock guitarists of all time, he certainly is and has earned that title. My point is that half of the great guitar playing you hear is caused from the use of effects. Hit the search button here on You Tube and look up this video - "Ted Nugent - Hibernation" . If you know anything about guitars you know that Ted's weapon of choice, A Gibson Byrdland, is NOT a rock guitar, it is more for Jazz. It is a semi hollow bodied guitar, some are full hollow body, and special care has to be taken when using it for rock music otherwise it sounds like crap and gets a tremendous amount of feedback through the amps. For those who don't know, You know how if you have a guitar plugged into and amp and you get to close to the amp there is this squeal? You hear it with microphones a lot as well, like when people are giving a speech and all of a sudden there is this high pitched squealing sound. That is what is to be avoided.. Nugent embraced that and if you watch that video, in the beginning and for a couple of minutes you see what Nugent can do with that squeal and it's friggin awesome! Guys like Nugent use very little effects, no seriously he actually does use little his is not like EVH's little lol. It cannot be denied that EVH changed the rock guitar and I for one am grateful to him for it, but let's cut the BS and just tell people like it is shall we Edward?
Ron your absolutely right. Here's my two cents. What Eddie was to the mid seventies, Hendrix was to the sixties. In other words, Hendrix was the Eddie Van Halen of the 1960's. They both revolutionized the guitar in how it's played.
GOD BLESS YOU & PROTECT YOU EDWARD VAN HALEN. Groeten uit A'dam XXX
+Maafa 1619 i tried a squier tele and it felt amazing, sounded a little thin but dang nabbit it played great. technologies advanaced far enough with the production of guitars that they can make well built guitars with everything in the right place so you dont have to fight with the instrument for a reasonable price. great action, good feel, all the things you'd only get in expensive guitars 20 years ago are pretty much available in low end ones today.
