My 17 year old son is going through a very difficult health issue. As we grow closer together through it spiritually and personally he sends me this song to lift me up. He tells me he loves this song and it strikes very close to home as we grasp at faith and petitioning prayer. He is wise beyond his years and I am blessed by the song and the courage of my son.

This song is one of the reasons why I bought a mandolin. You can kind of play this on a uke, but you'll miss many of the accents that Eddie Vedder has going on in this song

I absolutely love this song, although I never really understood the "too fast to fold" line. "Too fast to hold" would have made sense, but why "too fast to fold"? If I ever run into Eddie, I'll have to ask him. In any case, the message comes through loud and clear, and the instrumental at the end is so beautiful it sometimes brings tears to my eyes.

I work as music therapist. Clients mum gave me mandolin for christmas. Don't know how to play it, never held one. Other client no connection to mandolin, who has acquired brain injury from stroke gave me music to this song because she loves it and wants to sing to help her talk again. Fell in love with this song. So happy and sad. I'm a mandolin guy now. Happy-tears in my eyes as I'm slowly learning this :)

The social department and media driven consumerates of the world are long past thier point of interest for me. Seemingly invading our very existence with the drivel they peddle. A brainwashed society is all that remains. People are most likely to center on self and individualistic wants then what a family really needs. Peace will come in the end...

No matter how true the cages of society might be, family and the people that help you survive in this weird world come first no matter what. That is not a cage its the law of human nature. wish i lived in america from the late 1800s to the early 1900s just missing the world wars, the time was the american renaissance, transcendentalism, thoreau, emerson, poe, it was a time of pioneers, the time when americans were true americans, a time where nature was the means by which a man would find himself. i can only dream of living free like they did back then, and i think chris mccandless wouldve too, society today is way too judgmental, and calls people like us anti social freaks....

in my eighth grade year i was suffering through health problens and bullying and suicidal thoughts and the only person there for me was my math teacher and he taught me this song on his guitar and mandolin and that saved my life

People this may sound like a bit of a preach but I want to share something. We are free. You may not feel it or know it, but you are. Human beings, the greatest species on earth, 1 in 7 billion each and every one of us. We have the ability to think, feel, share, love, and best of all remember. Live your life with the attitude that you CAN do anything. Life is far too short. The only people who are not free, are the people that believe they're not. A postive mind set leads to inner peace.

This is song is my wish to be free from disease, pain, doctors, government ruling our lives. We are a slave to the man. It scares me, but , I like others with others with a disabling disease, or just struggling to make it, are stuck in this country ,that is supposed to be free. I don't know what they call freedom, but my definition is freedom to live in peace, and free to our pursuit of happiness. This probably never existed and never will!

@Gufberg Waldens alright, it's a little dry though a lot of people find, Try some Norman Maclean, like A River Runs through it, or UFSF 1919. If you want something Canadian Wilderness try Farley Mowat, he's done some that are great, People of the Deer, Never Cry Wolf.

I watched Into The Wild the other night. Now i spend hours a day just listening to Vedder and looking at pictures of Canada with google earth. I've GOT to go there! I must! Can anyone recommend some reading to acompany this btw? I'm reading Walden by Thoreau at the moment. Considering Jack London.

Chris McCandless man of the world, supertramp, lived free, however short his life may have been, he himself said in his journals he felt so in touch with the world and the freedom of life. Eddie Vedder makes music that touches the soul makes one long for that type of freedom. people wish they were free, free form perpetual debt, govt control, tyranny and war. in these trying times when it looks as the entire northern hemisphere is in chaos i long for freedom.

@Gufberg Try reading "Wish You Well" by David Baldacci. This is an unlikely book from this author who typically writes thrillers. It is set in the mountains of Virginia and looks at Man vs Nature, Man vs Man through the eyes of a child. I think you will enjoy it!
