After the film Close, I saw a lot of interviews with Eden Dambrine. It's amazing how this young boy of barely 15 masters several languages perfectly. He speaks French, English and Dutch perfectly ! And back home in France, most of our children don't even know how to speak the French language properly ! 🙄😏😭

An old friend mentioned this film and knowing a long ago tregedy I endured, she recommended that I watch this film even though I'm not prone to watching any film based soley on word of mouth, much less any film with the direct or implied subject matter this film represents. I went in knowing nothing about this movie. But I came out of it an emotional wreck. And still a week later since I watched it I cannot stop thinking about it. The pure and innocent love and friendship between these two boys opened up a flood of memories based on my own childhood. Lukas Dhont's style of directing and the casting of these boys are an extremely rare pairing of natural acting that I have ever seen. It was excruciatingly painful for me to watch. The sadness was overwhelming and i hadn't cried so much in years. I, myself was 13 when a very dear friend who was a year younger passed away suddenly. We did everything together, were inseparable much like these boys in this film. The only time in my life then where I knew no inhibitions on showing affection to another boy, total heartfelt affection that we shared together. Like in this film, our families were supportive and they knew we would be protective of each other and most likely keep our friendship for years to come. But it just wasn't meant to be. Unlike the boys in this film, I barely got to say goodbye. Walking into the hospital where my parents took me, to see my friend laying in the emergency room mangled after being hit by a car when we had just been playing outside earlier that day, barely conscious. Before they took him to surgery I got to hold his hand through tears at seeing him this way and I told him that I loved him. Regretting that this was the only time I did throughout our intense and close friendship. When he died in surgery I was destroyed. I lost all interest in anything and began stealing alcohol to numb the pain of losing him. The next 10 years were extremely rough for me. I could not form new friendships, especially with another boy, because of not wanting to do anything to tarnish the memories I had with him. The loss of the affection and pure joy that we had together was too much to bare. I gradually moved on, married in my late 20's and was eventually able to wake up and not have thoughts of my friend hit me first thing in the morning. The facial expressions, obvious love that Dhont's characters had for each other, the fact that no political or ideological agenda was pushed down the viewer's throat, the tightly controled scenes with absolutely no excess dialog or distractions made these characters so believable and only heightened the sense of pain I felt watching this. I guess you can say that my friend, just like the boys in the film, was my first true love but soley platonic that concentrated only the true sense of love and companionship that I now know can only exist in childhood, before labels and bias destroy the best of male friendships. Even though I'm not gay, I'm both glad that our friendship didn't have to fall apart like it did in the movie because of words spoken from other kids, and that I got to say goodbye. And I'd never trade anything for the experience we had as kids. Even decades later. I still miss my dear friend.

@@richterkleiber Thank you for replying. It's been very rough. I feel vindicated after watching this film, because I knew what I had was real but could never talk about to anyone. This film liberated years of pent up emotion and denial. I have no ill will towards anyone and also I wouldn't wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy.

Amazing that his English accent is so neutral. He was amazing in this movie. Never acted before but his character carries 75% of the emotional weight of this very emotional movie, much of it with little dialogue. It’s a masterpiece movie, but with an actor less magnetic than Eden, it could have easily missed the mark.

Don't forget Gustav....he was every bit as good and with even less screen time than Eden. They are both incredible actors. giving the 2 best child performances of all time.

@@ISetYourFaceOnFire Gustav De Waele was fantastic! We couldn't have agonizingly watched Edens later suffering without first seeing the absolute love and bond with Rèmi. All of the cast played a huge roll in this. But they were in supportive roles for Eden. This was his film and the fact that he carried most of the heavy weight of it was just astonishing to watch.

He's a natural actor. He nailed that part and deserves every nomination he received. So sad he's pursuing dancing he could be a real film/director super star.

@@alifpr - he was a ballet dancer long before he was picked up to star in 'Close'. I hope he continues acting, but I'm not sure if he will or not. It'll be tragic in my view if he doesn't.

Hmm!! So in a previous recent interview video, how come when a member of the audience asked Eden a question in English, he said that his English was not good and he preferred to answer the question in French? From this video above, Eden's command of the English language is absolutely perfect - hmm!

He speaks English well but this monologue sounds rehearsed. He probably understands English better than he can speak it, so it makes sense that he would answer the audience member's question in French.

@@no_longer_ Just say he/him like 99.99% of boys to exist in the world. Questioning out of nowhere when nothing prompted that he'd be anything different is just weird behavior that's all.
