Yay, EDF Iron Rain is done with! I'll likely have some type of smaller form review on EDF6 soon after it releases, but before I do the big big video on EDF6 later on, expect a full review on World Brothers first. @@Dorkaxe Sorry about that, just got an itch for more EDF videos so I thought I would rewatch a bunch of your videos and comment on this one. Also joined your Top Tier People Patreon to help out.
Iron Rain was ok when I played it, I liked the character customization, I actually liked the 30 seconds timer to grab any gems I missed before leaving the mission, there was also that cool thing that happens on the last mission where your base is destroyed so the menu scene is also on fire. Everything else was.... not quite worth it. The vehicles not only are consumable that you have to waste credits, they actually have WORSE handling than the main series, I never bothered trying out the flying vehicle but based on the ground vehicles I cannot imagine they made a better handling helicopter than the main series. I guess I'm glad I experienced it so I can better understand what I like about EDF games, but boy am I not gonna play this game ever again.
i love your videos, i fall asleep to the reviews mostly each and every day! i like to go through and watch your crafted videos to see if i can find anything i might have missed, like the dead island video i frequently watch it while i am resting, your videos have a very special charm to them. You are also very funny, thank you for your continued efforts making videos! one day they will shine through and pay off! Merci for making these videos, Ps: Merci means thank you ;)
Hoo boy, Iron Rain. I love the EDF franchise, but this game is an exception. I have a *lot* of things to say about it, and practically none of them are positive. Personally, I played Insect Armageddon after playing Iron Rain, and I've gotta say that I respectfully disagree with IA being worse. IA at least had solid if basic gunplay and movement. Sure, it had fewer enemies, weapons, missions, and difficulties than the mainline games, but so did IR. IR's movement feels stiff and clunky, the guns feel like a previously undiscovered torture method, the AI allies are entirely useless (even IA's companions help quite a bit compared to these goobers!), and the enemies themselves are quite frankly the worst they've ever been. On the higher difficulties, you practically have to play this game more like a cover shooter than an actual EDF game, all just to avoid those terrible stun effects, knockdowns and DOTs. I can make an entire list of every bad thing that rubbed me the wrong way, and every good thing I *can* say about IR has a caveat or two. The character customization was neat, but making a sword wielding, bikini wearing dork won't save a bad game. Good video though, so props to you mate.
i played this game a few years ago and honestly it was the grind that ultimately put me off, at least you were able to see it through to the end, i stopped by mission 40. as a fencer main yukes have dissed my child with their imitation
I put in 100+ hours into iron rain when it came out Simply because I'm an edf fan boy. This was one of my least favourite edf. Any class can use any gun. If you do not have an S rank weapon equipment you'll be kicked from higher difficulties when playing online. Funny because I prefer some of the A and B rank weapons. But that didn't matter. There was an insane amount of frame rate drops and crashes (on release). Because of the graphical upgrade there's less enemies on screen at a time but they are Bullet sponges. Especially those rainbow Beatles. I'm sure it's alot different now in 2024 and post patches
Excellent video. Can't wait for your EDF 6 review, I'm halfway through the base game now and I'm really curious on your thoughts. I'm loving it and so are my two friends who I got addicted to the series lmao Looking forward to that video, good work on this one, you're awesome
I'm so glad prowl rider got put into world bros so I can play prowl rider in a game that's actually fun. I would really love a mainline edf game with character customization and maybe a ranger equipment or wing diver jetpack that gives them the prowl rider hooks.
Yeah Iron Rain could have been good. Like, I like some aspects of classes. I like some of the items. However , there’s so many bad things with everything… Honestly, the biggest irritant was how every enemy could knock you down. Even grinding was made boring for me… I think they even acknowledge how stupid the rebel faction was in EDF6. There’s dialogue where an NPC says if it were a movie humanity would fight each other, but they’re just too tired to.
I love how in real EDF games the Fencer is the epitome of Power, offense, and defense. If you know what you're doing it's variable load out can single handedly handle even the hardest of missions. In Iron Rain the striker is a wet fart. The only thing about IR I like is the customization of armor and character, but they still managed to shit the bed with it in that everything is just set color palettes.
The one clip of my impersonating Dr. Mengel doesn't do it justice. I was doing this nearly every time we played. I started doing it more often as we quickly decided that the actual game isn't great, and the impersonation was a distraction from actually playing the game.
After watching this video, I realize why this game is so hated when I personally didn't get THAT offended by it's existence. But now I see that the game straight up punishes you for the AUDACITY of trying to enjoy it as a EDF game. You are directly punished for engaging in half the mechanics too, it's nuts. So many good ideas utterly trashed for the weirdest balance decisions that seem almost designed for frustration rather than any kind of fun. It's almost baffling given how many good ideas there are that are just horrible executed.
This game made me appreciate the normal EDFs so much more. Because it looks like a very simple game with crude graphics and gameplay but every time a different studio tried to make a EDF game they fail horribly. The graphics on this one are great but everything else is just terrible the guns, classes everything is so unsatisfying
Yeah, the biggest issue for me was how grindy it is. The stagger stuff sucks too, but the grindy-ness is by far the worst part. I would be willing to put up with so much more if I was able to actually buy and use more of the weapons/items.
i acquired this game for zero dollars with the cash/gems DLC included, and it made experimenting with the right loadout for the right mission way better- now the big downside each gun has feels more like character and less like a punishment for buying the wrong thing. it even makes overdrive better, because you can always pick the right weapons for the overall mission structure and time overdrive just right to plug the gap at a difficulty spike. being able to test loadouts felt a touch more like labbing something out in armored core when there was actually choice involved. obviously it still has a lot of problems overall, but removing those roadblocks let me enjoy EDF with a character creator at least a little. anyways, congrats on another dorkaxe classic vid in the books
It really is a shame. I actually kinda liked the game after beating it, but the flaws are far, FAR too intrusive to call this good. I loved the customization system, something I genuinely wish the main games would use. The prowl rider is really cool and actually a good addition to the core 4 classes. Yet for every good thing, there’s like 10 bad things. My breaking point realizing how dogshit useless the AI. I’m someone who gets attached to ai companions, especially in EDF where they genuinely make a big difference in some missions. Yet here, they’re completely useless. They shoot nowhere and are only good as distraction meatshields. That’s what made the final boss bad for me. Also I will NOT take this Insect Armageddon slander! That games main sin was being literally incomplete (and yes this is my bias since it was my entrance into the EDF franchise on Xbox 360 where I also got EDF 2017)
I really wanted to like this game. When it works it really works. The interesting thing to me is that almost all its faults could be easily patched. Tweak the credits and power consumption system, change numbers on the guns, make items not cost anything to use, add a skip collecting phase button, make it so you get knocked on your ass far less. It’s mostly numbers tweaks and you’d have a pretty good game
This game looks really good graphically. The enviroment lighting is so nice. Is it just me or is the sandy city the city from EDF 2017? It has the big pointy tower.
Wow. This game sure was a product, huh. After hearing how the weapons do, then seeing how the Roulette gun works by comparison, I'm fairly certain the main reason it was valued so highly is because it's just a default ranger assault rifle. That's kinda sad when you think about it.
37:17 - Double damage up to 200 meters, and you can defeat two enemies (with up to 5872HP) almost three times as fast, i.e. in just 22 seconds. You can't do that with the other one.
Overdrive sounds easily fixed by making it recharge over time, and get bursts of sped up recharge as you collect gems. Suddenly there's a strategic decision to be made on pickup of Gems. The entire credits system needs to go, or credits could be a purely cosmetic thing. It's definitely a case of 'occasional good idea that is totally ruined by horrible execution'. It's somewhat fascinating how badly Iron Rain went design wise. Unlike Insect Armageddon, basically nothing of the ideas here ended up migrating/being iterated on in the mainline series. Which is unfortunate, because Prowl Rider done better could be amazing.
It probably wasn't intentional, but something in EDF6 DOES remind me of something in IA...I won't spoil anything more though, it was such a fun surprise that I don't want to risk planting a detailed seed.
Won't spoil anything important but they did do better with World brothers. Though the Dlc added difficulty (Disaster) was too much to me so gave up on getting all missions full clears, (Enemies got too spongy and one shot me, needed to grind way to much armor to survive so not worth bothering with it) Getting some unlocks was also a headache, way to rare for some stuff and hard to narrow it down (not much usable info online) Will be interesting to hear your take on it.
Wow this is so sad to see something that was done SO WELL in the past done SO BADLY here... Seriously fuck MTX in games...ugh... As always great job breaking down the game and explaining it to those that haven't played it! :) Can't wait to see the next one!
I wanted to like this game, I liked other entries into the series so I thought it would be the same. I even liked Insect Armageddon since it was my first one into the series, but that lack of boxes and other pickups somehow feels worse then all these micro-transaction style currencies. At least when I pick up a weapon box I'm guaranteed a weapon. Not always what I want, but at least I'm always getting something. This is all grind with even less reward and half of the fun.
Honestly, I got as far as the first scorpion level and gave up on Iron Rain. Tried going back a few weeks later and it still didn't sit with me. I got so fed up I bought EDF 2017 for Xbox 360 and had a much better time with that.
Yeah I'm not looking through with all those titles anymore. So there are the numbered ones and this. Then there's Insect Armageddon. Well I played 5. Guess I have to understand what's the rest.
Wow. I'm loving the heck out of playing through 4.1 with a buddy at the moment, and every change you described sounds terrible and exhausting. Nice looking game though!
Okay yeah I'm quite glad I stopped playing this one, it was on PS Plus so I gave it a few hours and then I meant to play it again once I got a PS5 but never did and uh...yeah I'm not missing anything it seems. Genuinely an EDF that takes things a bit more seriously does sound cool on paper but this just ain't it in gameplay or aesthetics, something that's as grim as Attack on Titan would be amazing actually.
with the ai atleast in insect Armageddon the two ai's you have with you can actually help you also world bothers ai actually can fight now thought you can really abuse it with the weapons system if you have the right weapons
Aside from the usual flaws Western EDF games have, I'm simply not a fan of the post apocalypse setting and that the EDF has been demoted to coporate goons.
Heavy Striker is good, when you find out how to keep mobile. So here's the trick: Sprint until you reach full speed, then chain two jumps while letting go of the sprint button. You can look around, aim, charge up attacks or shoot, while the momentum will let you dodge attacks. (You will also conserve tons of stamina and regenerate it rather quick..) You will thank me later. Also, there are strong CC weapons in game, able to hold your ground better. Also also, consumables can help with "hold your ground" tactics. Also also also, there are some really quick farming missions in game for quick resources. No need to buy currency.
So negative 🙄. I really enjoyed the game. It does things differently from the mainline games, yes, but if it didn't, what would be the reason for it to exist? I like the mainline games the best but I also enjoy all the spin-offs, I hope they keep making these games, and not listen to negative Nancies like you. EDF!
