This is read matter-of-factly, although the description indicates that the narrator is "wrestling with grief and despair." However, I've discovered evidence that Edgar Allan Poe had nothing whatsoever to do with either the writing, or the first publication, of this poem. It was written, as I have concluded, by Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier, in December of 1841 based on real-life circumstances.
