It's funny that this is the video that got me to start playing MtG, when I realized I could make a fun and playable deck on a reasonable budget, and now Edgar Markov by himself is $25. I started playing a year ago and bought my own budget Edgar Markov deck (with major differences from this video's recommended decklist), and the total came to around $30 (Edgar himself was $6), which of course is no longer possible due to ever increasing demand for cards and by extension increasing prices.
@@rev1ction Yeah I noticed that lol. WotC hasn't put in much of an effort to keep up with EDH demand, they seem perfectly content to let more and more cards climb to crazy prices.
I think there's room for a flavourful Aristocrat subtheme here using blood artist, falkenrath noble and such. Elenda, the dusk rose helps that a lot, as does Cliffhaven Vampire. It opens the door to sanguine bond, exquisite blood shenanigans, etc
Cliffhaven Vampire, Epicure of Blood, and/or Marauding Blight Priest create an instant win combo. Add in Cruel Celebrant, Vicera Seer, Butcher of Malakir, Elenda, Elenda's Hyrophant, and you end up gaining a ton of life with a tone of creatures. If you get two of the Vamps out in the first line above, all that Lifelink (or the Celebrant) creates the trigger for the combo. Even without the instant win, it is ruthless. I threw in a New Blood, and a Damning verdict to help keep the other players creatures down. FWIW, Markov is $120 now...
Sorin Markov works as a fantastic edition to any strategy that involves an opponent's HP being 10 or less, as he can snap his fingers and make any player's life total become 10 the instant he comes out on the battlefield.
When I ran Edgar I was never a huge fan of Bloodlord of Vaasgoth, I eventually swapped him out for Drana, Liberator of Malakir. Well costed, great keywords, killer ability.
Butcher of Malakir is the cheapest gravepact effect money can buy. Sac a bunch of tokens to Blood Bairn when you've got it, the Butcher, and Falkenrath Noble out, here's what happens: you drain an opponent's life total, everyone sacs a bunch of creatures, the noble drains everyone if you wish. Sac enough and you can blow someone out of the game while hurting everyone else's board state. Add Sanguine Bond to that combo, with all of the other drain effects in the deck, you may have won without tapping a single card. I need to build this deck now.
Sac ten creatures to Bairn in this combo, you've brunched one person in the face for 40 life points, everyone else for 20; or you've drained two people for 40, gained 60 life, forced the survivors to sac 10 creatures, and Blood Bairn is a 22/22.

I wanted to ask, is Thraximundar on your radar at all? He seems pretty one dimensional but him being grixis could have a lot of spice, curious if you have considered him. Theres not been an edh deck tech on him in around 2 years, would be a good reminder to people that he exists
I would love to see Hope of Ghirapur! I depend on videos like yours to keep Magic cheap and playable paper wise. I'm slowly moving towards online play cause of the cost.
Bloodlord of Vasgoth is garbage. I love the art. I love the idea behind it, but it is a total trap card. 1a) It does not help any vampires you already have in play, which already makes him a terrible "lord/anthem." 1b) You have to attack for damage before casting him instead of a normal "lord/anthem" which you cast pre-combat so as to pump your army. 2) It does not help your tokens you get from Edgar Markov afterwards either because you are not casting them. 3) He costs 5 mana, the same as Dictate of Heliod, Vanquisher's Banner, Eldrazi Monument, and other quality effects which are far better. I would much rather swing out and then before damage, land a surprise Dictate; Have an anthem that lets me draw cards instead of conditional bloodthirst; or give my team flying and indestructable at the cost of a single token which was free to begin with. 4) At 5cmc, he also sits at a point where other decks have enough mana to cast board wipes. In the pre-con deck, I cannot tell you how often he was dead in my hand waiting for me to play a creature first so I could get that bloodthirst trigger next, else casting a 3/3 for five is terrible. Really... a total shit card. It sits in my binder looking cool, but at $0.39, Dictate of Heliod is so much better.
Card appears at 9:23 Thanks for providing Heliod's dictate as a budget alternative, but you should have mentioned that Monument's worth $6.50 and Banner's worth $3.54, so that people without budget restrictions can buy upgrades.
@@Xenwarrior5 - Thank you, though people without budget restrictions would play a much different build, which I wrote in another reply. I do not find $6 as all that budget breaking. To me, budget means saying no to $20+ cards. $6 cards here and there are reasonable I think. Sure, Purphoros God of the Forge is an amazing card in this deck, as each one mana vampire will result in 4 damage to every opponent and you can win by casting 10 or fewer creatures in most games... and I use him in my personal build... he is not budget at all. I started on a budget myself and began with stuff like Glory of Warfare, Goblin Wardrums, Cover of Darkness and so forth to get those cheap (money and mana) anthems and forms of evasion.
I have invested in my own Edgar Markov deck before, but I love the way you look at it! I’m not usually the guy who sits down for 20 minutes watching a single video, but you are very engaging and I LOVE this kid of a channel. You guys are what make the Magic community awesome. You guys give us the tools to build something like high level decks, with something small. Please, keep it up, I love your content, you’re awesome!

I agree 100%. Still a bit of a MTG Newbie but I love Commander and these budget decks are a great way to get started. The only problem I have is knowing which cards to take out when bringing in an 'upgrade'. So I would really like to see the In/Out added to the video
I dont know if I'm just being stupid or what... But trying to buy the deck off of TCG isnt working for me, it keeps saying that each of the packages need a minimum of 2$ in it but a lot of them have less than a dollar. Is there any way to fix it or bypass that?
Vona is my favorite vampire. Shes especially good for any non-creature removal. The 7 life needed to pay can almost be instantly replenished due to her having lifelink. With her having vigilance, she can attack than tap to destroy any blocking creatures.
I like the colors and also like the vampires, I want to know what would you include into this deck since edgar is so powerful, i would like to see him in an efficiently priced deck for like 100$, especially since the deck price is now $60....

I've been trying to work on a Darigaaz Reincarnated budget build focusing on the big dragon boy as a recurring bomb and the rest of the deck made to get him down as quickly as possible, the rest of the deck playing more of a reactive strategy with instants and sorceries. I'd be interested in your take on it, if you're making a list, the build I have is lacking a certain "Je ne sais quoi" or "Punch".
so what would you replace in the deck for the upgrades? those upgrades seem very reasonable, I was thinking of adding morre changelings instead of all of these small 1/1's but they all seem to do something that helps the game plan so I don't know
@@TheCommandersQuarters I guess the vampire lord can replace vampire interloper since its a 2/1 for 2 that does nothing, I also added Legion's landing, which I might take out again and Ajani's welcome for some life gain, as that gives us 1 life every time you cast a creature. since we have 45+ creatures in the deck (I think you had 48, I have 45), that's 45 life if we get it down on turn 1. Legion's landing might not be needed, maybe I can find a better card to put in instead. Edit: the only vampire lord that is left that isn't in this deck is "Vampire Nocturnus" so I guess I'm putting that in oh and Sovereign's bite because.. why not, it's dirt cheap and has a 6 life lifeswing to it (you gain 3, they lose 3). Gifted Aetherborn iss also something to consider, its a 2/3 for 2 black with lifelink and death touch
door of destinies, radiant destiny, vanquishers banner, urza's incubator and if you wat to afford it herald's horn Another possible mana rock in pillar of origins, sure you can only cast creature spells with it but still a good mana rock. path of ancestry and unclaimed territory are also good lands to upgrade your mana base
I just checked this decklist, because I love Vampire tribal, immediately after you posted this. 28$ on TCG and 38$ on CK for the deck, not including lands.
Unique way to setup Edgar Markov, fast efficient and powerful, I personally bought the pre-constructed Markov deck and heavily modified it, I would love to link my Tappedout deck list but, I haven't updated it since I rebuilt it 6 months ago, very well done on a 25$ budget, I'd love to run my deck against this one and see what they do against on another. Again great build on a very limited budget.
Cathars' Crusade sounds good in theory but horrible in practice when it comes to token-heavy decks. Keeping track of how many +1/+1 counters on each creature requires A LOT of dice or counters. Have fun using a spreadsheet!
This deck’s recommended upgrades feel a bit empty without the original Olivia Voldaren... I mean, you can turn creatures the opponents control into Vampires, and then take control of them, which can make late-game pretty dicey for them.
I bought this deck when it came out and then the Ixalan block added a bunch of new options for upgrades. I can tell you now that Mavren Fein is silly with Indulgent Aristocrat. Swing hard, if they can't block, eat the new token and make your swing bigger, if they do, eat what they block and you have a big lifelink token and a bigger swing. Either way you dish out a lot of damage and can regain a game changing amount of life if you have something like Sanguine Bond out.
I just build this deck and its really fun to play. Only gripe I have so far after 6 games is that I always have lands problems, anyone else having similar experience? Which creatues should I exchange with lands Or do I just need a better card engine?
Hello, great video as always! I'm currently building Edgar Markov deck and was wondering if there's a chance you could make $100 budget decklist? Also since you've made it 7-8 months ago this could also count as an update since there are some very good vampires like Cruel Celebrant that compliment low-cost strategies.
I decided to throw this together . I have every card for the deck but what creatures would you replace? I have most of the Sorin planes walkers so I though about throwing a couple of them in. Also have Swiftfoot boots and lightning greaves to thrown in and fetches and shocks
@@TheCommandersQuarters, it's nbd. The deck you built is really well balanced, but the kne I got is from 2017 and is actually more scaled for full frontal assault, so I'm not upset. Good content though! Bought the whole Lyzolda deck and both Markov and Lyzolda are are en route.
Possible Exchanges: Mentor of the Meek Bygone Bishop Mathas, Fiend Seeker (I like the politics) Zulaport Cutthroat (backup, or cheaper Blood Artist, works only on your bodies though) Gifted Aetherborn (once they come down in price in a few weeks)
You forgot Forerunner to the Legion! Tutor for a vampire and you can add a +1/+1 counter to target creature whenever another vampire enters play. 2+W and 2/2 $.14 NM Thanks for the video. Really made my restarting MtG easier where Commander is THE format locally.
Lol... the price of the commander 😂😂 I literally just paid £35. And that’s not excessive... I’ve only ever seen 2 copies pass me by in the 2 years I’ve been playing magic. Good luck finding one for $2.73 😛
I run a less budget edgar list, and it runs a lot of the same cards. This is a very solid deck tech and I'm impressed with the deck quality within the budget limit.
