Even studying at one of the top universities in the world, I find your videos more helpful than what I learn in my lecture. Thank you for well constructed materials. Your playlist are made in a sequential order with short and necessary explanations, fit for students in all areas. Thank you for the effort.

Sir, how does the bottom edge of the half plane distort its adjacent planes?
@introductiontomaterialsscience
@introductiontomaterialsscience 4 года назад
The adjacent planes are on either side of the half plane. So the spacing between them is 2d where d is the interplanar spacing. Below the slip plane since the half plane is absent these two plane try to attain equilibrium separation d. This causes distortion near the bottom edge of the half plane.

why did you cut it only half,not the whole...what if u cut it whole...
@rajeshprasad101
@rajeshprasad101 5 лет назад
If I cut the whole crystal and slide it by one step, I just get a slip by one step, but I do not get any dislocation inside the crystal. When I cut only half and slide, I create an edge dislocation at the boundary between slip and no-slip regions.

Dear sir, the boundary of ‘slip’ and ‘no slip’ region looks like a plane, extra half plane, in your slide. I cannot understand why is a dislocation line. sincerely!
@rajeshprasadlectures
@rajeshprasadlectures 4 года назад
We are dividing the two-dimensional slip plane (not the 3D crystal) into slip and no slip regions. Therefore the boundary is a line (and not a plane)

Why we do cut and how?
@introductiontomaterialsscience
The cut is only in imagination, a thought experiment so to say.
