This was such a good movie. I was blown away when I went to the theater to see this, not expecting much beforehand. It did fine at the box office but really deserved a lot more. I feel this is one of Tom cruises’s best movies and is better than any of the MI films.

This one is up there and definitely over the MI films. I have to agree with the other comment about Last Samurai though. That movie is one of the greatest movie ever and is Tom Cruises best.

Cage thought he could do better at finding the omega on his own without Rita's help. He took a different approach. And yet, so did the Mimics.

The alpha wanted him to bleed out and him to loose the ability to restart

He tried shooting himself but the alpha knocked the gun out of his hand, while also cutting his hand in the process. I think they hoped he would bleed to death so he would lose the reset ability upon death. Cage understood this and so he committed suicide by drowning himself.

This scene confused me. I think the trap was for him to kill the Alpha, that way, they could reset his abilities.

No, it was a trap to lure him in so they could take his blood, not reset or kill him "yet". That's the reason the alpha and rest avoided killing him, to avoid a reset BUt let him bleed out so this other alpha could extract his blood or something.

Notice the mimics have insanely coordinated movement along with speed. Essentially, the lured him here, knowing he knows to kill himself if shit goes wrong. Hence, when he tries to shoot himself, it doesn't stop him completely. It could have way before he made that decision- it deliberately LET him shoot himself, only the alpha swept in at just the right time and just the right coordination/touch to make him shoot himself in a way that wasn't fatal instantly, but he would bleed out slowly. Personally that's my take. Either way, the blood needed to come out, and that was their goal (regardless of how)
