Want to have the smoothest painted edges for your next project?
In this video I show the method that I use to get the best looking painted edges. This method is suitable to be used with many brands of edge paint including Fiebing's, Giardini, Fenice and Vernis. The method involves sanding, heating, waxing and burnishing the edge paint to get either a glossy or matte finish.
Required Tools and Materials (Amazon US Paid Links):
- Edge paint
- Paraffin wax
- Edge paint applicator or awl amzn.to/3iEzMlz
- Sand paper (#400, #800) amzn.to/3ITdBCU
- Canvas cloth amzn.to/3uDVWdj
- Natural rubber cleaner amzn.to/3LrtYs1
- Electric edge creaser
- Edge creaser tip FN2 (optional)

I mix just enough for a project which is normally around 5 ml in a small container with a screw cap. That normally can keep it for drying out for a long time if it is properly sealed. In my videos I use a contact lens container which is the perfect size.

Hi Teran! I have learned so much from your videos and always look forward to what you will do next. I am struggling with edge pairing currently. I can complete a simple strap like this beautifully, but my issue comes when I am trying to finish the edges of a wallet that is stitched together, it seems that the paint never dries evenly, globs form on corners or wherever gravity takes it, etc. could you do a tutorial on this or do you have any other resources??
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier Год назад
Thanks! Make sure you mix your paint uniformly before you use it and try to get all layers even. You can try adding a bit of water to dilute the paint to make it thinner so you can get thinner layers, normally limited to around 10% added water depending on the brand. Corners and curves can be a bit tricky but thinner layers will stop the paint from running due to gravity.

Thanks! The heat treatment step is very important to get the paint bonded properly so it doesn't peel off later. Painting does take a lot of extra time, I only really paint with exotic leathers, if I am working with all veg tan I prefer burnishing.

Would you say you need a filetuse to attain such a smooth surface? Or is it all in the Sanding?
