Edible Natives List: www.ecolandscaping.org/wp-cont...
There’s an increasing inclination to utilize more native species in home landscaping and in parks and other conserved landscapes, thanks to books like Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, which extol the virtues of native plants over exotic ornamentals for attracting and sustaining beneficial insects. Yet, for some property owners/managers, this alone may be insufficient motivation to “go native”. Perhaps knowing that many native species are edible by people too will provide an additional incentive to plant native species. Juneberries (Amelanchier spp.), for example, are equally edible by songbirds and people. The taste of the ripe fruit is like a cross between cherries and almonds. Edible wild plants offer opportunities for people to connect to nature via their taste buds, thereby building their enthusiasm and public support for adding edible native plants to their home landscaping, as well as for conserving other lands that offer foraging opportunities. Adding native edible plants to a landscape can boost biodiversity as well as “spice it up” (literally as well as figuratively - i.e., we can have our acorn cake and eat it too). Learn about at least three dozen of the tastiest native species the Northeast U.S. region has to offer. Keys to the identification of each species are provided, along with edible portions, seasons of availability and preparation methods, along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging.
Russ Cohen’s “day job” is serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration. One of his areas of expertise is in riparian vegetation. He has compiled a list of native plant species suitable for planting in riparian areas; wrote nine fact sheets on the ecological and other beneficial functions of naturally vegetated buffers along rivers and streams, intended to aid the effective implementation of the Mass. Rivers Protection Act; and (in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club) prepared “Trees, Paddlers and Wildlife”, a set of outreach materials (RU-vid video, brochure and PowerPoint presentation) intended to raise the awareness of paddlers, riparian land owners and managers, and others about the ecological and other beneficial values of retaining trees and other woody vegetation (living or dead) in and along rivers and streams. In his spare time, Cohen pursues his passion of connecting to nature via his taste buds. He is an expert forager and the author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, published in 2004 by the Essex County Greenbelt Association. Mr. Cohen has been teaching foraging since 1974 and leads foraging walks each year at a wide variety of venues throughout the Northeast.
This presentation is part of the free Webinar Series "A Focus on Sustainability" prepared for landscape professionals. The series is being presented through collaboration of the Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA), the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (CCLC), the Midwest Ecological Landscape Alliance (MELA), & EcoLandscape California (ELC). Known regionally for their quality education programs, these organizations are working cooperatively to share knowledge and encourage conversations with landscape professionals from around the country and the globe.

In Australia not many people do not use wild foods, they are unknowing about them.I have studied them and a learner still ,I use the few available in my garden for sometime, now I am 74,and have been told by people they do not believe I am as old as I am.I as a child leaving the rural area developed illnesses from alergies to everything else, every time I visited in the rural I felt better and got well again, since I have lived in the rural for the last 15 years I got better and my health has improved even more since eating wild foods the last 5 years .I teach my granddaughter how to pick wild foods and prepare them, and one rule is as taught by my grandparents is never pull the plant up by the root, never pick all the leaves, never distroy the patch, leave the seeds to scatter for regrowth, people that distroy the plants are killing themselves if in the future if there is great need.Rule of thumb ...as they say is leave many plants alone to seed and spread for more.

Just something i practice while foraging elderberry, I wait until the flowers start to fall off and lightly shake them into a bowl. It's probably not as potent medicinally as it would be if I picked the flowers off at their peak but I make things with the berries as well so I don't wanna disturb that process.

Persimmmon, there are soft type and crunchy type. the soft one you have to wait until ripen to be able to eat. the crunchy type can be picked somewhat raw and eaten.

I wild harvest. Oldgoat saves seeds as replants for more fruits , native and natural fruits of my area . I make a good amount of jams n jellies . Oldgoat takes the left over product and takes that back out for the animals. Oldgoat also harvests medicinal plants. Mullein is one I target , no more than two leaves and never hit it again for two years . Yarrow is just for my own teas and my spots are overgrown. Ethical harvesting and never give out your harvest locations

l'm in The Florida Native Plant Society. Check out "Green Deane" on RU-vid. He's from Florida and has over 150 videos of different edible plants in Florida. He also does foraging classes all throughout Fl for like $30. l went on one last year in St Pete.

If those are in the restaurant menus, how do you know they they have producers to produce for them? They probably want to make sure someone who can bring on a regular basis, rather than relying on nature.

I've been looking for blue or black elderberry in nurseries but to no avail instead I found a goldbeer European elderberry. Do they have the same use and effectiveness? Is is also to eat the berries raw?

@@lalielou1 -- from what I understand, Elderberries need to be cooked (or dried?) due to a toxin they have. Caveats: I've eaten them without ill effect, but ONLY a very few at a time. Do your own research! Several web search engines are at your disposal!

I eat them raw while picking then come home and make the elderberry syrup for the winter. DO NOT EAT THE LEAVES(poison). I saw elderberry in the Gurnee's seed catalog. Need 2 varieties to pollinate

I'm looking for videos about native plants for the west, particularly southern California. Does this video include plants for that area? I don't have time to listen to it in its entirety to find out. Thanks!
