The goal of this session was to explore sequencing with the Ornament 8 using the Lyra 8 and Microfreak.
•Ornament 8 cells 1-6 used to create melodic loops on the Lyra 8. Cells 7-8 function as a clock for the Microfreak. Ornament 8 patches are a bit complex to explain in words, but essentially there are four loops happening. The number represents the cell and the → represents the direction triggers or signals are flowing
1→ 2 / 2→ 1 (Root trigger loop)
1 → 6 → 3 (F Loop)
2 → 4 → 5 (C Loop)
7 → 8 / 8 → 7 (Clock loop)
The root trigger loop alternates back and forth between the F and C loops depending on the length and polarity of each cell. Cells 1&2 also send CV→ output to cell 8, creating fluctuations in the speed of the clock signal sent to the Microfreak.
•Lyra 8 tuned to F minor scale. Playing Fm7 in fifths (F C F C)(A♭ E♭ A♭ E♭) Lots of delay and drive, sharpness to taste on some voices. Lyra 8 is being processed through Moog Matriarch filters in dual lowpass true stereo mode with CV cutoff modulation, as well as lots of delay.
•Microfreak in paraphonic mode with the oscillator set to waveshaping. Osc parameters modulated by LFO and Cycling Envelope in run mode to create morphing timbre variations. Cycling envelope's fall and hold times are also modulated by the LFO to create more variation. Cutoff receives modulation from LFO, Cycling envelope, and pressure in varying amounts. Microfreak audio processed by Source Audio Nemesis delay in tape mode and Eventide Space in hall mode.
Audio recorded direct into iPhone XR via iConnectAudio4+ interface. I know the Microfreak clipped a bit, sorry :(

I think this might be the most tenderly beautiful Lyra performance I have ever heard - great work!

Thank you, it means a lot to have the nuances appreciated! I honestly did like 6 takes of this idea before settling on this one. Chaotic tools like this are so much fun.

Glad you liked it! Ornament is very abstract but lots of fun, it really brings the Lyra to life and now that I have a pulsar too it’s interesting to see how they all merge into one super instrument. My only criticism is I wish it had more pulse converters, and it’s definitely a tool that inspires you with its limitations, by which I mean you’ll immediately wish you had a second one to create longer patterns or more complex behaviors.

Thank You! I was really pleased with how the unstable clock created by the ornament influenced the microfreak in this video, planning to revisit the idea soon I think.

This is really really nice! How do you inteface to the Microfreak, are you using CV?
@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 3 года назад
Thanks! Yeah, using CV. This approach is a bit like using a square wave LFO as a clock source. Each cell of the ornament has a ‘pulsar’ output which sends +10V when the cell is active, so I have cell 7’s length set to the minimum possible duration and cell 8’s duration controls the tempo. The cells trigger each other in an infinite loop and the tempo is modulated by the activity of the other loops via CV input to cell 8. There are a lot of secondary fine tuning considerations like PPQ resolution / sequencer mode / tempo range of target synth. Also the specific duration of the clock trigger signal can be important for some synths. In this video I had the micro freak in ‘one step’ clock mode and it didn’t behave the way I expected at all but was still very useable. The ornament also has a ‘pulse converter’ but I’ve been measuring its output signals and haven’t really figured out some the behavior yet.

@@Bombmotion I've got the Lyra and my Ornament is on the way! Is is the Ornament sending out the CV to the microfreak to the clock in CV?
@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 2 года назад
@@andreaskitzmann7391 Yeah, just the pulsar output of the cell to the 3.5mm clock cv input

Nice…………..I have the Lyra 8 and am thinking about Ornament 8. Since this video would you say that Ornament 8 is still worth buying (I am torn between another Lyra 8 OR Ornament 8
@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 2 года назад
Thanks! I think the ornament would be a better choice than another Lyra. I find myself sometimes wishing for another Lyra when I have certain scales or harmonies in mind, but ultimately the ornament encourages exploration of those same ideas in a pretty unique way and opens a lot of possibilities for interfacing different types of equipment which can’t really be accomplished any other way. Also I think both were designed with deliberate limitations to encourage getting the most out of what’s available and I guarantee if you get an ornament you’ll end up wishing you had a second one of those too for similar reasons to the Lyra lol

I want to step sequencer my Lyra but the ornament is too damn expensive. Do you think I could connect that new Behringer sequencer to alligator clips attached to coins on each pad and get a similar effect?
@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 3 года назад
The Behringer is a keystep clone, right? I cant find a manual which gives technical details on it's CV capabilities. However the gate output on the keystep is capable of the following gate CV formats: S-trig, V-trig 5V, V-trig 12V. I don't really think the swing or keystep would be a viable tool for sequencing individual voices on the Lyra. I've used a beatstep pro before to sequence the Lyra through the hold gate CV input (expects +5v) but that controls 4 or 8 voices at a time. It could maybe work if you had something with as many individual CV outputs as voices you want to sequence and used two alligator clips per cable (one on the ground, one on the signal) but it would be a ridiculous mess to troubleshoot and I haven't tested anything like that yet. Seems like a case where it would be a lot more effort to create your own solution.
@josefk5659
@josefk5659 3 года назад
@@Bombmotion thanks for your reply. I should have been more specific. The name escaped me at the time. It’s the Behringer 960 step sequencer I’m talking about. It’s a 70’s moog clone for eurorack.
@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 3 года назад
I looked it up and the steps on that 960 Moog clone sequencer output +5V V-Trig format gates. I just did some testing and I don’t think that would work either unfortunately. The issue is that the ornament doesn’t actually send any voltage to the Lyra, seems it simply closes the circuit by closing the path to ground when a given cell is active (emulating a finger press on the contacts) so all traditional gate outputs from other sequencers are probably useless in this context. My test setup was essentially a eurorack gate output over a 3.5mm TS cable with one clip on the sleeve (ground) and one on the tip (hot signal). Touching the hot clip to the upper sensor triggers the voice regardless of voltage being sent over the cable, reversing the clips on the sensors yields the same results. The voice sounds instantly as soon as the clip touches at +5V, -5V and 0V. Sorry to disappoint, doesn’t seem there’s a cheap workaround.

@@Bombmotion well, I’m impressed by your thorough response. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I’ll keep thinking about it but I might just have to shell out for the ornament.
@tomnussbaumer6077

@@josefk5659 Don't drive any CV voltage from another device into the trigger sensors! The sensors on the Lyra act as simple switches. When you touch them, you simply connect the ground on the lower sensor with the upper one. So what you really need is some switches you can remotely operate. When using MIDI you'll need something like the MIDI Solutions Relay, but with 8 switches (don't need to be a mechanical relay of course because there isn't much current involved).

@Bombmotion
@Bombmotion 3 года назад
It’s not modified. I’m using the adapter included with the ornament 8 sequencer, that’s what’s resting over the finger contacts and has the wires connected to it.
