Own these headphones for 1 month now, loving them so far. Did a back to back comparison with my wifes Sony XM3's, i couldn't stand Sony bass-heavy sound signature, but their EQ control app works really well. Definitely not for bass heads, but the energy, response and how tight the bass sound just makes it so much enjoyable in music without mudding into the mids. Was considering the new XM5's which are USD390, and these Stax were just USD200 (in Malaysia, Asia) so it was an easy pick for me. Lack of ANC might be a drawback for some, but I have the XM4 earbuds for ANC especially in-flight travel. Only major drawback for me is the app, doesnt have a tablet compatible version, and my phone keeps reminding me the app is a security threat, which I uninstalled it for peace of mind.
I have been using these headphones for a few days now. While I do detect an (extremely slight) static during certain pauses, it has not really affected the listening experience at all. In fact, I only noticed it after watching this review. I find the sound signature quite enjoyable -especially in "classic" mode. Personally, I do find it odd that there is no ANC, but in reality, this feature has never negatively affected my enjoyment of any headset -comfort and sound quality first. In fact, I prefer the cloth pads as they make it seem more open and "airy". While my set does not creak whatsoever, I do wish the built quality was a little better. Ultimately, this headset is really for people who want wireless planar magnetic headsets without breaking the bank. After all, my favorite fully wired planar headset and amp aren't all that portable.
@@gertost The soundstage does get a bit more expansive, but not as much as if they were open back. They do sound more natural. The lambskin earpads are super comfy, and do a good job to block noise passively, but can also make it a bit "confined", and can get a bit hot. Nevertheless, channel separation seems very well defined in my opinion, which helps in the illusion of a larger spatial imaging. Hope that helps!
I Bought The LetShouer S12 IEMs About A Month ago . I Use Them With A 2.5 Balanced Cable , My S9 Pro DAC AMP DONGLE And My Z Fold 3 . I Have Been Blown Away When Listening To My Music Because I'm Literally Hearing Audio In My Music That I Had Never Heard Before . Bass Hits Like My 1000X M3 Over Ears But Tighter And More Enjoyable . I Want A Pair Of Planar Over Ears That Will Give Me The Same Enjoyment .
Enjoying my stax spirit s3, a lot. Pros : detail and enjoyment. Worth playing with the modes. I like the stax mode. Fast response. Cons : after Bose and Sony, the lack of touch controls is a pain. The app needs redesign, controls are too many clicks in. Not the widest sound stage though still enjoyable. Call quality outdoors with any breeze isn't great. However, indoors call quality is fine. No ANC. Audio quality varies with device: varies. With my LG v60 it's great (aptx HD). With my Sony nwzx2 even better (LDAC support). Not as impressive with my iPhone compared to the lg V60. With wired the volume drops, depending on the source. With a headphone amp and wired with WAV files it's excellent. I find the headphones comfortable to wear for hours. No background noise on mine.
@@TotallydubbedHD the LDAC comment was about the Sony NWZX2 rather than the Edifiers, but good to make that clear ). The Edifiers sound a lot better with my LG v60 than any other phone I tried and using uncompressed files (a message pops up on my v60 rather oddly saying its using aptx adaptive, rather than HD).With Spotify downloaded tip quality there's not a huge difference with the headphones compared to my Sony or Bose Headphones- I was disappointed at first with them. The app I use (for wired and wireless) is USB audio player Pro. With wired it bypasses the audio layer in android which isn't brilliant. What did surprise me was the difference with wired with different devices. It needs more power. Volume dropped with the v60 and wired and was slightly subdued. With my Sony dap it was much better and also with a headphone amp. The Edifiers have become my go too headphones ki have some Audeze LCD2, but they're too heavy in comparison. I had planned to get some 7hz timeless IEMs (preferring them over the s12. However, I have some very very long lasting shure 846 IEMs which are tough as nails and have a sound that a enjoy for pretty every genre).
@@TotallydubbedHD love your review btw. The 846s I've had prettiy much since they first came out, working my way through a few cables. The buttons on the Edifier do feel like they could become a weak point. I have to press for between 4 and 7 seconds to get them to turn on. And I've stopped bothering to turn them off (they can be turned off from the app but it's not just one click to get there).
hi great review well done......i am looking for a set of headphones to use watching movies / utube and netflix on my ipad plus listening to music so GOOD SOUND is important ....Whats NOT important to me really is noise cancelling or taking phone calls....are these Edifier Stax headphones overkill at 499 ( canadian ) 365 ( USD )for my needs or would i be better off getting ,,the BLACK FRIDAY PRICES ..... soundcore space one are 80 ( canadian ) 59 ( USD )....the soundcore Q45 are on sale here with black friday prices for 130 ( canadian ) 95 ( USD )would you get these over the sennheiser HD 450BT same price as the soundcore or the Edifier WH950NB for 179 ( canadian ) 130 ( USD ) ? ...out of these that i listed which would you recommend for my needs..... or is there one not listed which might work better ?....thx a bunch...cheers from Canada
That's a lot of question. As per the review, these sound excellent and are impressive in that department. But of course, you won't be getting the most out of them due to codec limitation of the iPad.
Would cost me 149$/Fr. Would never pay 300+ for these. They look like, produced with in mind to have many future mini improvements "you can buy" if you know what I mean? But products never get their perfection anyways.
Great review 😊 I got these today here in norway.I really liked the sound. So pure and clean. They are not for bassheads, but the bass is there when it should be.I used them with an moto g71 wich has aptx.I did get some lagging when playing music from qobuz. But the static noise you talked about,i didnt experience it in my headsett. These are defintly the best wireless headsett i have tried.I have tested sony xm3,xm4,yamaha yh e700,bose qc35 and audeze mobius. These are just amazing. The comfort are good, not great. And too have the option to buy an bluetooth headsett that dont have anc,but priorety sound quality,is also great for those who dont need anc.I thougt instrument seperation was good, and soundstage ok.Its not always i get impressed right away when i try headphones. But these impressed me with their sound straight away. And awesome battery life 😊👍
I hate ANC, gives some kind of pressure on my eardrums. So i am looking for good NON ANC headset. What elsowould you consider with a mic and wireless up to around $500,- Just for some compariron. Do not like the sound of the Sony XM4 and 5 an also they are to tight and my ears press to the inside. Bose is ok (wife has it) but not great. listened to the Sennheiser momentum and liked that sound a lot better but ANC, Rather pay for better sound quality. Will use it for Video conferencing and listening to music.
Just got them and they sound better than any other wireless headphone I’ve tried…to me it’s all about the sound and not the bells and whistles…others may not put sound first and that being said that may sway others away…as for me I’m now a no. 1 fan…
I've been watching your monitor reviews, and i think the way you do this is very impressive. I want to buy a 240hz monitor, in my region are just 2 good options with an "affordable" price point, the asus vg259qm and the Aoc 24g2ZU (240hz ips monitor), the aoc one is about 20% cheaper than the Asus one. With that been said, which one should i buy? I am not a pro player or something, just want to feel food while playing.
Thanks buddy, glad you like the reviews! I'd personally pick the Asus, but if you're not a hardcore FPS gamer and you've got the GPU for it, consider a 144hz 1440p instead!
@@TotallydubbedHD my gpu is a gtx 1660 Ti, don't know if it is a good gpu for 1440p, 144hz. But this is not the main problem... here in my region, there is just a single option, that is the Asus VG32VQ1B, that comes with a VA panel. I've seen some reviews of that model, and it has a lot of Black smearing. And still it is 554 dollars, while the Aoc is 314 dollars.
lack of ANC is not an issue for me, as ANC usually give me headache and feel unnatural x) as for build quality i agree on the clicky noise of the buttons, for the rest ... dunno why but mine do not creak at all, earpads ... i do prefer the fabric one for comfort ... other than that ... they are pure golden audiophile grade headphone as i like them ;)
They can't be used passively with the 3.5mm jack? Useless. What are you supposed to do when the battery stops holding a charge? Chuck these in the bin?
Hey, I got a question tho its not related to this video, but regarding monitors, would you get LG 27GN800-B or AOC G2 C27G2ZE/BK? Thanks for your videos
needs to be electrically ON to be used cably...mmm no. no other planar magnetic headphone needs that. and the posibility to use cable is precisely for when batt goes dead, a big fault here, i have edifier w855db (not planar) plug cable and thats it..,,i guess ill wait for the S5 they said these s3 are the first of a line. i also need LDAC, i know most planar magnetic need big nice amplification (have some) thats why i have my nice headphone amp, i guess these S3 are for people who dont know planar headphones. mmm thanks for the video and info. su mas grande pega es k para usarlos cableadamente TIENEN K ESTAR PRENDIDOS , justamente el cable es recurso para cuando muere la bateria y o el dia de mañana cuando muera la electronica interna acaso crees k es eterna? bateria y circuitos moriran...podras seguir usandolos con cable...este no.
My S3's have the static noise too. I think it is very noticeable. It is very annoying, and a turn of for me. Had I known that they have static noise i would have never bought it. I have been asking in comment sections (on other channels) if anybody have noticed the static noise. I got 6 replies and they all wright that their S3's have no static noise. Your the first, who i found, that are talking about it.
I'm pleased that you found my review useful and that you can now use it as a reference point, though, it's sad that they do have static and that no other reviewer or person has pointed it out yet! Thanks for sharing btw.
I was looking for a pair of BT headphones and I always wanted to check out planar magnetic headphones as well. I also own a pair of Stax SR-L300 and I love them to bits, so when I first read about these I was very excited. You might say I was swept up in the marketing and jumped on the chance to buy them when I saw them for a reasonable price. And listening to them now I have some thoughts. The Stax connection in a bit dubious. There is a "stax" preset in the app (an app that is lacking in functionality and is also clunky to use) but to be honest the standard "classic" tuning is the only one that sounds good to my ears. The only thing that i can muster up to link these to Stax headphones is that the detail retrieval is pretty good. Maybe not electrostatic levels of good but it is better then most dynamic headphones I have heard. Overall the listening experience is above average and it does justify the price I paid for them albeit just so. If you can find these around the 300$ price point and you just want a pair of pretty good sounding BT headphones then they get my recommendation.
So your original Stax is more audiophile? I was looking for a older used Stax Srx, but found this one also. BT is nice but not a must for me. Would u take the older Srx or this one? I am a true audiophile, having conrad Johnson amps, Audio Note, and so I am curious, thanks in advance!
i 'm thinking buying thoese headphones or seinhizer momentum 4. i want to use them for pc only, games, music etc. Can you give me your opinion which headphone to buy? thanks
I think that no anc is a good think,as long as it gives better sound. There are plenty anc headphones out there, and not everybody needs anc.So for me to have the option to buy an high quality headphone without anc and other stuff, and that focus on best sound possible,is an big win for me.But i think it should have Ldac.
Cable connection is always better, no matter the codec you use, but it's not drastically better but rather a refinement if you will on the sound :) And yes, the battery should last longer, however, I'm not certain what the claim is from Edifier; I wonder if the 80-hour claim is over wired, as mentioned, didn't do a rundown test but I suspect that MIGHT be the case.
Bro do you know the wireless connection is often better than wired for most bluetooth headphones due to the codecs right? Also, this uses planar magnetic drivers, which is the actual reason that it requires to be powered on all the time in order to work. This drivers don't work without energy
Good idea about the energy use but there are many non-powered planar headphones on the market (these are not electrostatic!) and disagreed about the wired vs wireless comment!
Great review, i suscribe! :). They are good for pc gaming wired option as well? It will be good to have a headphone for daily life, and game (wired or bluetooth). I want to try the planar magnetics and i was considering Peronse, but it seems to have many issues.. and they look more just for gaming... Thinking to get this one..What do you think? . Thanks for your reviews!
Thanks! As you might have noticed, to use them passively you need them connected to a power supply, so no I wouldn't recommend them for what you've asked. Rather, I'd actually suggest the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless - they work flawlessly over USB or can be used without needing external power via 3.5mm
@@TotallydubbedHD Thanks for your reply! and for you suggestion of course. Even tho it needs to be turn it on, with this 60-80 hours of battery life, it wouldnt bother me that much, its quite annoying, but if the sound quality is worth it, i will consider it. Did you have the chance to use them for PC gaming? and another question if i may, with no ANC.. the isolation itself is any it good? let´s say, for wearing into the plane or something like this. I will really appreciate that if you can give me some "light" into this two questions. Otherwise, as you suggest, i will consider others options. but i want to try the plannar magnetic so badly, but i dont see any with bluetooth. Once again, thank you for your time and for you great review! :)
You had to find some flaws ! Is so difficult to admit their real class! (and so unpleasant to the competition!) They do not have active noise cancelling!!!! Oh!!! Why don't you blame Audeze, Hifiman or even Abyss for that? They are high end headphone either you want to admit it or not. Sound stage? better than the 4000$ Utopias! (and they are closed ) Come on! It hearts when the Chinese prove how over priced are the established known firms. They cost as much as the cable of the Abyss Diana costs and they sound as good as the Dianas (without the distortion) We had enough with the fairy tales! These headphones are an apocalypse in all aspects.
Jesus, you seem like one of those overly aggressive people who defends their purchases; I do also pick up and highlights flaws in competitors' products, too. Anyway, best of luck going forwards!
@@TotallydubbedHD I do not defend with the same passion my purchase of the Abyss Diana V. Why not? I paid almost 4000$. Because they are overpriced and they have audible distortion. (otherwise very good) I have done several expensive purchases, among them Sennheiser HD 800S , some expensive HIFIMAN. Grados.....none of them justifies the price and all of them have flows. These ones they are very close to the best in sound aspect. They have not more flows than the very expensive ones and i could say they unmask those the sell their name expecting the "tests" to justify the extravagant price. (perfect headphones do not exist. After a poind are just different ) The Abyss sells the cable 350$. More expensive than these headphones! Excuse me but i do not like to be fooled! I was talking with the distributor of GOLDPLANAR headphones. Another humble Chinese maker. I asked him why does he sell so cheap comparing with the competition. He told me that the company was making the membranes for many first class companies and they are sick and tired watching them making money out of nothing,. They make their own now, very good indeed. Their flagship sells for 650$. A cotton Tshirt made in India costs 2$. If you put an Armani stamp on, it sells for 100$ . I really get angry when the same thing happens in technology. It should be a fair relation of cost and price. ....and of course when the rule of the name royalties in pricing is broken it hurts! Are you with the consumer or the Brand name exploiter? Cases like the EDiFIER Stax S3 should be supported if your target is to help the consumer.
