Join us for a stroll along the chaotic Royal Mile during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!
The 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, FILL YER BOOTS, showcases and celebrates various arts such as music, dance, circus, poetry, musical theatre, comedy, drama, exhibitions and events. Known and unkown artists and performers travel from all over the world to perform and be a part of the world's largest arts festival!
The Fringe Festival began in 1947, when 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. As they weren't allowed to perform in the official programme, they decided to go ahead anyway on the 'fringe' of the Festival. This created a trend and sparked an artistic movement which grew each year with even more uninvited performers turning up.
In 1958, the Festival Fringe Society was established which created a formal programme for these unofficial shows as well as a box office, thus formalising the event.
For 3 weeks every August, the city's population triples and the city becomes a haven for art, culture and entertainment. There are thousands of shows to see, many of them free, though the main event is arguably the prestigious Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is performed at Edinburgh Castle each night.
