Great piece Rob. Thank you so much. I generally don't like the false color aspects of modern IR, but after watching this, I think I need to try some of what you have done here. I have recently converted my old Nikon D800e to FS, and have only used 950nm. I'm going to need to invest in a few more filters.

I own several Nikon D200's converted to various wavelengths that have served me well over the years. I was fortunate to have been trained by my mentor Mark Hilliard when he introduced me to digital infrared photography back in 2010. My experience over the years has given me a good understanding in acceptable lenses in the Nikon F mount family. In 2017 when I converted an Olympus OM-D e-M5 I experienced the most fun I've ever had photographing in the IR spectrum. I've since sold my OMD system as it became cumbersome juggling 2 camera systems. I've owned a Nikon Z6 since it was first introduced and really enjoy the benefits of full frame and mirrorless equipment. I've been pondering a Full Spectrum conversion of my Nikon Z6 and was wondering what information you can share as to the quality of a converted Z6 but more importantly the hot spot influence and lens quality of the Nikon Z mount lenses. Thanks for your input.

I have a small number of raw files from Nikon Z cameras that I've used to make profiles. From these, I can tell that the Z series cameras are excellent for landscape and infrared. Here is a good resource for Nikon Z lenses in infrared: kolarivision.com/articles/lens-hotspot-list/

Hey Rob, this isn't really related to the video, but I thought about the Monochrome conversion that's possible for at least some cameras. I was wondering if you might consider that and what you might think. It's more expensive, at least to make a Monochrome full spectrum camera. It is possible though, that a camera can be a Monochrome IR, Monochrome UV, and Monochrome Visible. For the Full Spectrum Black and White conversion, the camera sensor is able to resolve more detail but also can be much more sensitive to each of the spectrums of light including UV, IR, and Visible. I myself was thinking about doing such a conversion, but doing so at home might be dangerous because of how risky it is to the sensor. The extra light sensitivity is a means of not needing to use quite as long of a shutter speed as might otherwise need to be. In effect, you can get less grain. It's a reason for why many Astrophotography cameras have been Monochrome. In theory, it is possible to use a specific method for making three identical photos using such a camera to later merge in post processing using a specific program, for the creation of a color image. It would probably be very interesting to do so using a camera such as an SLR and compact camera, for landscapes. Then you might compare the output to that of a Color-balanced image from a Full Spectrum camera which can initially see in color. Interestingly, not only is the sensor of a Monochrome camera better at resolving detail, but the process of stacking individual photos, each one at a different wavelength, can at least in theory make for better resolution.

I would be very curious to see how much more detail could be produced from a monochrome-converted camera. As you pointed out, it is dramatically more expensive to replace the entire sensor on a camera compared to just replacing the hot mirror filter. The costs are into the thousands of dollars. Unless you are very comfortable working with electronics, I would not attempt such as conversion. I would be happy to test one if someone wants to send one my way. Otherwise, it would be difficult to justify the cost.

Excellent video Rob, thanks! Seems in most of your photography you use the 590nM filter instead of the 720nM. Is that because you have a modified camera? I want to use my Z8. I have the 720. Should I also consider the 590? Thanks.
@robshea
@robshea 7 месяцев назад
I have used many filters. I do mostly shot with a 590nm filter on a converted camera. With unconverted cameras, you are limited to 720 nm or higher, high-pass filters.

Hi, having great results with your IR colour swap LR profiles. I appear to be getting a circle of darker colour on photos which I presume is a hotspot (with lens not known for a problem). Sure I watched a previous video that dealt with hotspots but cannot find it. can you point me in the right direction or if it was addressed in part of other tutorial. Thank you

I have a kolari pocket, and I believe you can't make a dng color profile out of it, am I right? If so, how can I properly set my white balance?
@robshea
@robshea 3 месяца назад
The best way to set a WB is to use the custom WB function in the camera and select a neutral gray subject as a target. If you change filters or the light changes dramatically, you should set a new WB. You'll be able to tweak the WB in your editor, but only slightly, so a custom WB is important when shooting JPEG. (Technically, you can create a DNG from it using CHDK. However, that DNG file can't be used to create profiles, so it's not worth it.)

Fascinating video! I have seen some infrared images that peaked my interest in infrared photography. Question (and I mean this in the most respectful way) I was under the assumption that infrared photography captured the infrared spectrum and it was specific colors (the look). Excuse my ignorance but now it seems that it’s open to artistic interpretation (color balance, color swapping of your choice etc) I respectfully inquire…why not just take a regular photograph and swap the colors to what you want and make it “look” like infrared? I know I’m missing something here in that taking infrared photos produces a look you can’t get through processing or something. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. Thank you for your time!
@robshea
@robshea 2 года назад
Infrared light has no color. An image of only infrared light with a 750nm or higher cut-off filter will essentially be monochrome. Combining IR and visible light offers a couple of benefits, such as darker skies and colorful foliage (resulting from the combination of green and IR light). It is possible to create fake IR images using color shifts of visible light. Then why capture infrared images? There is something magical about capturing light that we cannot see. A visible light image cannot replace that. Also, there is a creative element to it. You can learn a lot about color by editing IR images.

@@robshea Thanks for the reply Rob! I get what you’re saying and since my question to you, I’ve been watching your videos on the subject. So thanks to you, I’m understanding it a lot more. I ordered a Hoya 720 infrared filter for my lens and following your vids on editing I’m going to give it a shot and see what I can get? I’m into abstract ideas and images and shooting something in the middle of the harsh sunny day sounds like fun too. Thanks!

Hi Rob Great video. Can I clarify one thing - I gathered that if an IR swap LUT profile is used it is unnecessary to set a white balance in LR (or presumably in ACR) is this correct or should I set the WB before using the LUT profile. I tend to set a custom WB at the taking stage and tweak if necessary so would this affect the procedure. Any news on you e-book that I look forward to studying. Great site contents too. Best Eric
@robshea
@robshea 2 года назад
- Setting a custom white balance while shooting in raw is optional. It can improve the preview you see on the camera screen making it easier to see your composition but has no impact on the options available when editing. - When editing, if you want to see a preview of the various color swap profiles and what their impact on color will be, select an "Infrared Temp" profile, set a WB, then open the Profile Browser to preview the color swap options. - If you already know which profile you prefer, select that profile and then set a WB. Selecting an "Infrared Temp" profile as an intermediate step is not required.
