This series has been a life saver for me so far and thank you and your team for this series Btw if you convert something to smart objects , do it by selecting and converting layers one by one ...if you multi select and convert, it will turn all those images into a one smart object i think And also make sure the layer visibility is turned on when converting or the converted layer will be an empty one. And also to access the smart objects "container" double click on the layer thumbnail...
Your talk on smart layers was brilliantly presented, and very well explained. Thank you. And no ridiculous music in the background playing. Must tell my camera club friends.x
What I like about these tutorials is that I've seen some of these features showcased in your previous videos, but it adds just a little more knowledge. It's not overwhelming at all. Thank you!
Aaron, I want to complement you on you Great Training technique and style. As a trainer myself, you make the material easy to understand to the beginner and very sly how you make mistakes to correct while informing the viewer what happens when you do certain things like making changes to a non- smart object. You really do make Learning fun. You truly are a professional.
This is an amazing series, thanks so much Aaron. After several years of using PS, I had never used the wonderful power of smart objects. A new dawn for me!
Love your presentation, so clearly illustrated. Thanks so much for offering this PS series, I've learned a ton of stuff and hope to be able to go back over all the material again.
Well done Aaron - especially good to review how to build a composite as well. Although SO files are larger to store, the question is, when would you NOT use them.
Hi Aaron, you are amazing. I´m so grateful about your tutorials!!! Today I have a little challenge with the separation between the fotos. I selected with the marquee tool a tinny strip, press shift+ delete, then fill with white.... and it is no filling. Why? I tried several time....
Thanks for the great vid! So, I can't figure out how to make Smart Objects and Adj layers play nice together. With a Smart Object pixel layer on top, the Adj layer/s below no longer effect the image. Cheers!
in case nobody noticed like me. you no longer need to hold shift to maintain aspect ratios while resizing. it automatically maintains the aspect ratio. hold shift if you DON'T want to maintain the aspect ratio.
When you are working with an advert or composition, you should use smart object to make sure you always have the information available, but, if you are only editing the image and are not doing resizing, than you should be good with a normal layer, unless you want to work non-destructive using Smart filters and so on.
If the original dimensions of the file inside the Smart Object has "good quality" and file size (dimensions), then Yes. Just because a layer is inside the Smart Layer it does not mean you can size up and still have quality, what you have on the original is the most you will ever get from a smart layer.
rixd Thanks a lot! What I meant to ask is that my original file size is... let’s say 3x5 (200 dpi) and I am blowing it up to 12x18 by using smart object. Would it be okay?
I would only add that in the case were after transforming your smart layer into another size without keeping aspect ratio, you can always go into transform again and in the top tool menu, just set the same percentage value to width/height, and the original aspect ratio will be respected. Transform smart layers without fear!
Thanks Aaron.. BUT many times before, I follow you using normal layers in your tutorials. Then when it is recommended to use normal layers -destructively-?
Great tutorial. The only question it doesn't answer is this: if smart objects are so great (and they are), why doesn't Photoshop just convert all layers to smart objects automatically. In other words, what can you NOT do to a smart object? I think it would be helpful to discuss how you rasterize smart objects for adjustments that can't be done to smart objects. Do you duplicate the smart object layer first and then rasterize it? This is where non-destructive editing can become a little awkward.
Yes to everything that @Justin said! Plus, it always depends on what you want to do, you can always have another document where you do straight-to-pixel changes and another where you use the results of those edits as a smart layer in another document. The designer in me says "Yes, everything to smart object", but then the photographer says "no, you need to clean the image". But then, other work arounds are always available.
13:05 how did you crop just 1 image and then layer it back on grid. When i try to crop 1 image it then crops my whole artboard. Thank you so much Phlearn!
Aaron, I noticed that after I finished the project I wanted to try and size it for print. I used the image dropdown to resize the image and making it smaller caused the image to rasterize. Wondering if you can give some tips for sizing images for print?
Quick workaround.. You can create a new file that has all of the properties for print that you need and then drop in (place) the image you edited. Make sure to select Smart Object if you get a prompt, but it should be placed as a Smart Object by default. That way you only need to fill in the document and save.
I want to use smart objects on my landscape photos, but when I go to use Nik filters it won't allow me to add it to the smart object. Also, I make a photo into a smart object and I cannot use content aware move tool to get rid of stray sticks. Is there a tutorial for these concerns? Thanks so much.
Hi Peg, I do not have "Nik Filters", but for content aware, I do know that you can double click on the thumbnails view and go into the file that has pixel values and edit anything that you want to it, plus, you can duplicate the layer so you won't affect your original image, when you are done, just close the file window and choose save. the changes will be visible on your file with the smart layer. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
How come if the layer is hidden (unchecked) and you convert it to a smart object the image in the layer‘disappear’? I’ve done this a few times and when I make layer active again there’s nothing in the layer showing up. I have to undo the smart object. Turn layer visibility back on. Then convert it.
