In this video, I take you through how I edited my favourite photograph from the Easter weekend. The photo was shot on a Leica M Monochrom with 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH lens with an orange filter.
SilverChrome Profiles:
jeffascough.co...
These were designed to convert colour images to black-and-white. They aren't camera brand specific and will work on all colour RAW files regardless of make. They also work fantastically well on Leica Monochrom images as you can see in the video.
The mouse I'm currently using is a Logitech G502 HERO with G-Hub software to add keystrokes to the mouse buttons. My Amazon Affiliate link to the mouse is:

If you would like some help with your Lightroom editing, please get in touch or take a look at jeffascough.co... for more details.
Thanks for watching
Jeff

Great look at your editing process, Jeff. This is a good reminder to not always use the full masks when a partial one will do the trick. Thanks for sharing your process.

Thank you for another WONDERFUL tutorial! I think I’d posted to you before I work with a M10M….and there is precious little info how to properly edit true monochrome imagery!! This is incredibly helpful!! I’m using Capture One, but I can readily translate what you’re doing in LR to C1…(although it would be way cool if you did the 30 day trial and gave it a try with video) Anyway, this is a badly needed resource for us digital monochrome shooters, and not only that, I’m trying to work this into my workflow when I digitize my B&W film scans…I shoot medium format mostly from 6x6 (Hassy) to 6x17 (Shen Hao)..,along with other unusual 35mm cameras. I’m using these videos to gather inspiration on those…lol, main difference being that I don’t have to “add” grain to those…haha Anyway, just wanted to let you know these “how to” videos are GREATLY appreciated and useful!! Thank you, CC

Another interesting video - thanks. Will either of you be buying the M11 Monochrom?….. or maybe the Ricoh GR when they put the Pentax sensor in it? :- )
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice Год назад
Honestly, we have zero interest in the M11M. The sensor resolution is too high for us to use effectively. I know we can dumb it down, but then why not buy a 246 or M10M? Nothing else is groundbreaking on the camera or very different from earlier models. As for the Ricoh - I’d be interested in looking at that if it happens. Sarah wouldn’t be. Jeff

@@petertaranscorsese2900 A lot of folks won't think about that either but basically the M range of digital cameras hasn't really changed much since the M240. Most of the changes are cosmetic. There isn't any autofocus to improve, and high ISO is just a marketing thing after a point. So, the only major difference is sensor size, but with an M camera, there comes a point of diminishing returns. If we take a piece of scanned 35mm film, estimates reckon it has roughly a 20MP equivalent resolution, so the M9 is the closest Leica to that at 18MP. As the rangefinder focusing system was designed around 35mm film, and the lenses were also designed for film, the M9 works the best taking into account my old lenses. When we start to increase resolution, the rangefinder needs to be more accurate as higher resolutions will show more problems with focus. The lenses won't look as sharp and things like motion blur and camera shake become an issue. The essence of shooting with an M becomes lost. Get to the M11/M and it's not a Leica M as far as I"m concerned, it's more like a Mamiya 7 and should be treated that way when shooting :).

Hi Jeff, Thank you very much for another fantastic video. May I ask what music you have used for the video? Thank you!
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice Год назад
Thanks for your kind comments. I honestly can’t remember which music this is. I delete the FCP library and files once the video is made. So I’ve no reference to it. Sorry.

With the new mask selection AI, maybe this would/could have even been easier. Also, as some of the new AI masking selections are "logical" (i.e. not physical coordinate based) you can copy the logic in the masking chapter of your Copy Settings... dialogue and past them to other images where they could apply. That makes applying the same logic to differently framed landscapes, or the same logic to differently posed portraits a matter of copy/paste. If you paste the logic of one shot to, say, 20 similar ones, then the AI needs its time, but bottom line this is incredibly much faster than having to go into each to do that manually. Would be nice to have this in tethered portrait sessions.

@WalkLikeAlice Год назад
Thanks for the comments. Every new build of Lightroom seems to make things so much easier. I find myself looking back at older work and reprocessing it with the new tools. I like the tip on copying and pasting of masks even though we don't tend to work with similar images. I also like the images to be a little different from each other, much like the were in the days of darkroom printing. If I was still shooting portraits though, this would be incredibly useful. Thanks for that.

Took my Q2 to the beach on a beautiful day and later found that the weather seal wasn’t enough to protect it from sand. Camera would grind terribly afterwards. The extended warranty covered me but I’ve since stopped taking my Leica and Sony to the beach. I’ll simply take an old Nikon or be good with my iPhone.
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice Год назад
That’s not great. It sounds like sand got into the lens mechanism. It should do better than that!!

@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice Год назад
Everything I do in these videos can be applied to any camera. The only difference is that I’m starting off with a black and white file. You would have to convert yours first. Everything else from that point is the same.
