Thanks Duade. Really enjoyed all the videos and picked up a few tips as well (I need to get my head around Masks). I'm putting more water trays and baths around my suburban block as Summer approaches We seem to be getting a few new refugee birds turning up. Glad to hear you missed the fires - as did we at Moruya Heads - but it could have been a different story if the wind hadn't changed when it did. Stay safe - Summer is not over yet.

Very nice. I love your videos. On this image, I would have taken the tail from the photo where the tail was not obscured and merged it in. I know purists might object to that, but for me that’s what Photoshop is for. 😀

Generative fill is worth a shot now in the latest version of Photoshop. Just used it on a Variegated Fairywren shot and it's come out brilliantly. I had planned to do exactly what you suggested but thought that I'd give the generative AI fill a try first and so glad that I did - saved me time and effort.

control alt shift E is called a stamp visible layer. Makes a virtual copy of all the layer work and base layer and makes a single copy of all that and lays it on top. New to your channel. Good content. Thanks and keep you the good work

Love your video, and your process. Might be the reason because the video is older, but I am confused about you using Photoshop in this instance. Are these not things that I could have also done in Lightroom (at least in 2023)?

Thank you Duade Paton. I have watched several of your vidoes with great interest. This is an interesting video and I like the end result of your editing - nicely done. Lightroom is new to me - how does it relate to Photoshop? Is it a pre-photoshop step? Are these both Adobe software programs? Are they part of the same package like one follows the other?
@Duade
@Duade 3 года назад
G'day, yes Lightroom is a Raw Converter but is very powerful in its own right and many people do all of their edits in Lightroom alone. Photoshop has a much higher learning curve and I use it for the final touches. They both come with the Adobe Photography Package, it costs me $14 AUD a month for a subscription. Cheers, Duade
@fgb3126
@fgb3126 3 года назад
@@Duade Ah! so you do not own your software; you must rent it from this company. Very smart move on their part. Altho' I have yet to tackle the learning curve of Lightroom, I did buy my own copy of it back in the day. So I presume I will not have to pay Adobe any rent! (which was my intention as I think I remember that that subscription thing was on the way...)
@Duade
@Duade 3 года назад
@@fgb3126 Gday Breck, yes it was a smart move by Adobe and no doubt why they are recording record profits. I need photoshop and lightroom so its likely I will be locked in for a long time. It seems to be the way with everything now, Microsoft Office, Netflix etc etc. Cheers, Duade

Wet well explained. I’m new to LR and FS and definitely looks interesting. Do you need both or can I just get away with LR ? I’m only using pics for personal reasons. Keep up the videos, as a fellow Aussie in Fremantle I’m interested in the wildlife you capture. Cheers John.

Hi Duade, great video. I only use Lightroom Classic (Ver.6!) and have been a bit overawed by Photoshop. You certanly show some of the benefits of Photoshop in simple way. I object to Adobe's subscription system, but I guess I'm going to have to subscribe to get the LR updates and Photoshop now. I'm keen to see what other photo editors are available. Any suggestons? Regarding Lightroom, I notice you use Copy Settings. This seems clunky to me. Is there a reason why you dont use the Sync button. You edit the first photo, then highlight all the ones in the batch you need to match settings for and then hit Sync. You can choose what settings you want to copy, eg Basic Tone, Colour balance etc.
@Duade
@Duade 2 года назад
Thanks Charles, yes, photoshop has a few benefits that is for sure. I usually edit one photo at a time and usually only a few from each session. I also often don't know exactly which one I am going to edit so I usually just do the copy method. I will keep the sync method in mind. Yes, subscriptions are a pain but seems to be the way with everything these days. The updated masking in the latest Lightroom are very good and handy. Cheers, Duade

I have watched many of your videos with great interest and admiration. The problem I have, is I am getting old, I cannot lay on the ground due to a disability, concerning my abdomen. I wish to take up Bird photography, but wonder if my attempts, to get to your standard will be hindered by not getting down to their level? any advice would be greatly appreciated.
@Duade
@Duade 2 года назад
Keith, thanks for the comment, you can still take nice shots sitting next to the water but yes, they look better from a lower angle. They do make 90 degree viewfinders that would allow the camera to be a bit lower with you sitting. The low angle really only impacts waterbirds and shorebirds, bush birds etc you can get eye level a bit easier. Cheers, Duade

Duade, just starting out shooting RAW, what would be a good program to begin with?
@Duade
@Duade 3 года назад
Marcel, I use Lightroom as I find it works well to process raw photos and also acts as a good image catalogue. Unfortunately, it is a subscription-based software. I think brands have their own RAW processing for free but they are often not very user friendly. Sorry I cannot be more help as I have not used any other software. Cheers, Duade

I wonder if there's videos out there that try to help you with the culling. I tend to take hundred or thousands of photos in cessions, but I still have difficulties to cull them down to a top pick and my workflow speed greatly suffer from it. Lots of them are also very similar and hard to chose between. I narrow it down for being unable to make a spontaneous decision because most of my pick that I rate high are simply just sharp to my taste or rated high in fear of missing a detail that I missed.

Try photo mechanic, you can get free trial 30days. I got it after tip from Olympic photographer with tight turn around times. I struggled with this too, no more. There's you tube videos on how to use, then you can choose what editing software in preferences. It's blazing fast to cull.

do u smooth the background with healing brush ?

I sometimes use the healing brush to remove small dust spots or highlights. The bokeh is caused by the lens, how close I was and how the photo was taken. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade , should I start using Raw I've' been taking all my pics in large jpeg mainly because of storage space, I'm starting to get some decent images now at my local pond of birds , but I don't have L /R or P/S just iPhoto on the Mac to play around with, is there a big step up in quality of images or is raw more geared to post work , enjoying your videos, Subbed thanks.
@Duade
@Duade 4 года назад
G'day Gav, I would highly recommend moving to Raw, there are many benefits. The main one is it captures a lot more information and allows you to make many more corrections in colour, highlights etc. Most cameras will come with a free Raw converter that allows you to make changes like I do in lightroom. I think Luminar 3 may have a free RAW converter built in. Also by shooting RAW you will always have that file to return too should one day you learn photoshop. Lastly I delete all of the photos I do not want to save space. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade "Also by shooting RAW you will always have that file to return..." Amen! I just did this for the first time on a photo I took in December. My son printed that image out for me for Xmas and had it framed. It resided on my desk and the more I looked at it, the more I saw a different crop. And, since I had saved it as a RAW as well as the jpegs I made from it, I could go back to it. Gavs, once I switched to RAW about 2-3 yrs ago I've never looked back! (But you must manage your images and not keep to many seconds. Hard drive space can become a factor!)
@Duade

@@fgb3126 Hi Breck, yes, I agree, Raw is the safest option and allows you to go back to the file and make changes easily. I only keep around 10% of photos I take to try and reduce hard drive load however I still have a lot of photos. Cheers, Duade

Great video Duade! Thanks! What is your process of exporting after you edit in Photoshop? Do you save the .TIFF file with or without layers?
@Duade
@Duade 4 года назад
Hi Bernard, in theory you could save as a psd file so you can keep all of the edits. Only issue with that is the size of the files, you soon run out of hard drive space. I export as a full resolution jpeg and a Web version which is 1800px. I delete the..TIFF file once I'm done. Cheers, Duade 👍
