In terms of the learning curve and ease of use, I view them this way: Webflow = 3D Studio Max Editor X = Figma Wix Editor = PowerPoint It all comes down to how much time and energy you want to invest into learning and working with each tool.
WIX is a great company. The added competition can only be a good thing. I love Webflow and hopefully developments like this will lead them to improve areas they need to, quickly. Like e-Commerce PGP options.
The addition of an style guide is key. It will definitely speed up the delivery of the end product. I hope Webflow is seeing this and looks to make improvements to its integration and e-commerce.
Ran lookin fresh with that clean cut.. ✂️ Great side fade alignment, great contrast, right amount of facial white space and precise margining between the beard and the stache.. I give a 9/10.. Coz you know Ran.. There's ALWAYS room for improvement in design.. 🤣
After watching this video I decided to try out the Editor X. I've been using Webflow for almost two years now, so a comparison was going to be cool. I made a very, very basic website, just a hero image and a header + paragraph. The resulting website was 2mb in size. The image I used was only 16kb, mind you. The editor overall is very interesting, although it lacks some very basic features (such as hover, as mentioned), though it seems to make really bloated and heavy websites. As a comparison, a full Webflow page with several imagens, CMS collections, icons, animations and more weights 2.5mb, versus 2.2mb of a page on Editor X with one image and some text. The pricing on Editor X is way more forgiving, specially since it supports my country's currency. Will be looking into it but it seems waaaay behind Webflow yet. Cheers all :)
This is the deciding factor for me. I like wix, I think they are the most user friendly platform, and their customer service is amazing.. but if it loads slowly (which is the price you pay for the user friendly design features), especially on an ecommerce site, it's a very bad look and hard to explain to clients. I switched to webflow for this reason. I need slick performance to feel good handing over to clients.
@@solidcoast If you work in USD, CAD or a more well balanced currency, I can't see any reason to choose Editor X over Webflow. It's been getting better and I currently use it for my projects, but solely because Webflow is insanely expensive in Brazil. If it wasn't the case I'd switch back in a heartbeat.
So far using Editor X has come more naturally than Webflow (by a long shot). I'm a designer first and although Webflow was great, Editor X just feels so normal. The learning curve is not nearly as difficult for me although I hope they add interactions because that was one of the things that drew to Webflow in the first place.
Hey! Thanks for the video! I believe that editor X has a long way to go. I have used Squarespace, zoho sites, and have also played with wix. I am both a designer and developer. I think that editor x has a great future ahead. Having said that, the very reason that I turned to webflow is the complete customization and control. Dev teams can work along side design teams. Plus as an agency there is a ton of additional features built in to run my web design business directly through webflow. These are features that editor x does not have. While Wix does have a great ecosystem of apps, none of them are industry standard and to be honest, I have used tools where you are literally using their entire ecosystem. What I learned from that is that not all companies have the ability to do everything wonderfully. Not all companies can be like Apple. Even Apple intentionally does not do everything. There is a lot that they happily do not do. Plus, Webflow has some amazing integrations, one of which is zapper so it fits right in within any infrastructure. You can also seamlessly integrate Webflow with Atlassian, Airtable, AND InVision so while I think editor X is a great step in the right direction, I am still not sold. Plus with accessibility becoming a huge part of companies focus, webflow gives more control and customization options that editor x or wix directly. I like wix as a company but after dealing with so many platforms, Webflow takes the cake in my opinion. All webflow needs to do is come out with a native Mac, iPad, and iOS app and I would be a permenant convert lol. But thank you for your video! Have a blessed day filled with blessings and peace!
@@Henry-350 yes I do worry and I have thought about that before and questioning whether it would be just as easy for someone else to do it, I've still got a long time to make decisions whilst companies are working on making websites practically automatically using the customers need
Greg737 no. I’ve been doing it professionally for months now very successfully. Trust me, people have no design sensibility, even when they have a Wordpress template to base it on. People just have no taste if they have no experience. Plus, they don’t consider speed, SEO, accessibility, user-friendliness, etc. Services are in high demand. Go get em!
Editor X is one of the few website builders that addresses the issues of the prosumer market. In my opinion, they should integrate a one-click (Editor X) option directly from the Wix consumer platform because end-users are evolving in their understanding of Web technologies, etc.
Obviously I am a big time Webflow fanboy! However, Editor X has some great features. For me it’s all about the speed and quality of updates and added features. Both are viable tools right now. In my opinion, Webflow still outperforms EX. We will see who wins in the race for iteration and improvements!
You're quite spot on with these observations. I've had to try rebuilding my Webflow website on Wix and the limited customization options is frustrating to say the least. There are lots of free apps but they all seem to have straight jacket fits that I find quite uncomfortable (without having to code). I have also noticed the efforts to improve on their offerings and I dare say the Webflow price point is a major drawback for me. Especially when clients insist on low budgets for premium projects.
Thank you. Appreciate your opinion. "Simpler" products have huge potential for expansion. Weblow it's a great product's but you know what happens in the next few years.
It's interesting how Wix decided to build Editor X. Like you said, it's to make designers more comfortable, so a lot of their interface reminds me of design software like Figma, Sketch, etc.
Hey Ran, You can change color of SCGs in Webflow too. It is a bit finicky process, but it works. You have to copy SVG code and paste it in the HTML embed element, but in the SVG code, you need to set the fill to CurentColor. After that, you can change color simply by selecting a new text color. Great vids, continue the good work!
Great overview, as I am looking at both of these products. That being said, there's other facets beyond design that should be considered, such as SEO, transaction fees and hosting fees when trying to find the right product for your business. Thanks for being transparent.
Editor X is a very worthy contender to Webflow. My short experience with it has been great! I’m glad that we now have more tools that are designer-friendly.
Thanks for the honest comparison. In my brief tinkering with Editor X, I found no way to create classes. The only global styles were the headings and colors. This seems to be a considerable limitation of the tool. Did I miss a way to create classes?
Thanks for the vid! I used the Wix site builder and though I really like the easy to use drag-and-drop features, the amount of bugs and loading issues makes me really hesitant to give it another shot. I am learning how to use Webflow now and it seems a lot more stable, fast, and reliable than Wix.
Great content from you as always. For me weflow is too complex. I mean I will need to invest moor time to master all commands. Webflow has much more possibilities but is meant for professionals site builders not for entrepreneurs that want to take business into their own hands and built their own website. For this reason I will give a try to editor x.
Unfortunatly Webflow is unuseable in Germany ( or whole EU, not sure) at the moment, because there is no clear statement about US privacy shield thing.
@@privat-mensch You can export the HTML files for your clients and host it on a german server, but some stuff does not work propperly without the Webflow servers. Make sure you host all script files and assets your self as well. Check out Sitejet or stick with wordpress and Elementor or Divi. Everything else sux or violatates the DSGVO. If you are from Germany, you know when I say do not risk an "Abmahnung" and/or "Anzeige". Can be very expensive. In my oppion Raidboxes + Wordpress is what you should use if you are from Germany. Or host a Typo3 server. :D That was a joke. ;)
I know Webflow really cares about things like these, so it's probably in the works, the legal systems changes so fast it's hard for everyone to be complaint 100% of the time, long-term: I don't think this is going to be an issue
haven't used webflow yet, but have done some stuff in editor x. Seems like it's pretty much same as webflow but maybe a little more designer friendly. Really like it. They needed to get a ton of development on it to get it out of beta though and tighten up everything cause it still has some quirks. The style guide is a good start in editor x, but they really need to build it out even further. Changing colors of SVGs is a HUGE help for logos and things. Makes the process so much faster when dealing with or using/uploading icons and things.
Thank you. I've been waiting for this comparison. I just started doing sites for my audience which is female entrepreneurs who are service providers transitioning from the 9-5 world. I love webflow but wanted Wix or Squarespace because my clients are familiar with the platform and not intimidated by it. With the release of Editor X into the mix Wix was the easy winner.
It has its pros and cons. There are still many bugs, and the performance issues still tend to be the case, but it's really interesting both in terms of usability, and unique functionality.
Hey Ran. Good video! I could not agree more with you. It is an exciting time to be a digital designer. Wix X seems to be a product to use for simple projects from time to time. Webflow for a bit more complex projects and actual code with frameworks for highly complex projects. At one point in time, one of this tools will revolutionize the way web tools are created. Perhaps at one point, html and css will be die as a paradigm. Maybe the mobile paradigm will merge with the web paradigm. See where all this goes.
Hi, great video, so coming from the coding from scratch to now using these tools as you say Webflow gives you basically the structure that you set up initially. For some clients I have to work on wix (Original) which is more friendly for people who need a quick website but in terms of systems and structures it becomes quite chaotic and the screen to mobile transition is brutal, so I am really happy to see them put out a similar product to webflow as when I proceed to show a possibility with webflow, clients are quickly intimidated with all the cms stuff they can't just kind of drag and drop so this is kind of an in between, there are good tools, better structure and also a friendly cms system for clients. But what's good is that there is always the option to add code so that can save time on some parts. Thanks for the comparison!
If EditorX can make some sore of bridge with Adobe XD. I think EditorX will take the FULL cake...you'll be having UX plus designing at your fingerprints...
I was starting to jump into webflow. but I want to try EX first. see how that goes..reason why is becasue how the payments goes. webflow way of payment its a bit weird but I read you have make 100 sites free in EditorX and you only pay for the ones you want. I think thats cool. EX still needs a bit of work to Polished itself but I have no doubt that within next year we can see a more stable platform!!
I agree with everything that you brought up in your video. A strong aspect to editor x is that when I wanted to create a forum, it created clear pages that connects to these "Wix apps" without the use of code. Noting that with Webflow, if you don't know how to code, you may have to learn with some API to connect members to other aspects of your site. I do like the fact that Editor X connects the users from a design stand point coming from Figma or Sketch for example but, as you mentioned in your video, Webflow allows an in-depth approach with interactions and with a structure in the box method that helps with Layout in some ways. I like your video. I am excited to see what the future hold for No-Code! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
hey Ran, I love your videos man. Curious how Editor X is doing these days vs Webflow. Saw a video a few days ago of a guy building an app using Editor X and ChaptGPT api.
I think I'll still go with Webflow right now. I feel like Editor X is somewhat similar to how Unbounce lets its user build the web page which is based on CSS positioning. This might affect the sitespeed. For now, I'll still go with Webflow.
Discovered your channel a week ago and love it, you do a great work! I'm currently learning Webflow thanks to you, and gotta admit it's really good This Editor X deserves a try though, sounds pretty good
Spent a couple weeks on Editor X and yep, you’re spot on. Had to see for myself and I’m actually building a site for someone, wishing I was using Webflow
Can you export/download source code (html, css, js etc) of your projects and host elsewhere or must the project be hosted with webflow and editor X themselves?
Ran. Thanks. Seems SquareSpace has been left eating dust, no? I’ve just taken a huge SS course and now I am tempted to take your WF one!! SS seems so limited compared. In your exp do you use a variety of platforms to create sites for your clients? Or stick to one? And where does Shopify sit in the e-commerce web build scene? Does Wordpress still have a place? So bloody confusing. Would be great to get your take before I go too far down one platform ‘road.’ Many thanks.
I understand your point of view as a "Web Developer".. But what about hardcore designers that don't do coding? I think in that specification, WIX's Editor X is exceptional. Webflow is like an Advanced Dreamweaver for coders who can't be bothered to code. There is so much things in web flow that is great. but too much loops just to figure it out. So I wouldn't compare both platforms. they are perfect in their own right >>>
I just need something to create website with drag and drop stuff, but also I want to custom code everything I want. Is there a platform which provides you with this opportunity?
I have played about with E.X it’s good but it Takes a little time to get used to with just playing around. I think it’s a better platform when setting up e-commerce and a little cheaper. However, if you like full control of how the website plays out then we flow is still on top.
Thank you Ran. I like Webflow, but I feel that the lack of a desktop app especially when travelling, or in an area or country with poor internet connections, to be one huge headache. I wish the Webflow team would really consider this. One can't be productive with an unreliable internet connection.
Thank's a lot for your honest and very perceptive review. Personally I don't like WiX renaming the existing HTML-CSS ecosystem ... they're basically targetting advanced web developers who haven't heard about HTML and CSS (I'm being a bit sarcastic).
Thank you for this review, I am in a process of getting a job in Wix and was concerned about the product. Wix editor has too many flaws. If am about to represent any product I like to see its strength and editor x is pretty good.
Don't forget you got NodeJS and ReactJS with Editor X you are not limited to websites only, you can build web applications which makes it quite powerful.
Actually I do like the drag and drop type, I've been designing for a while and Webflow is great but it's a big investment to get the paid plan to manage sites. I feel like Webflow is a level-up though both are very powerful !
Have you checked out Dev Mode in Editor X? It allows you to code your event handling and some other stuff in JavaScript. It uses a framework called Corvid. I've just started playing around with it, and would love to get your thoughts on it. Thanks for the video!
I'm a HTML/CSS/JS web developer first, and I tried Webflow. The only problem is , I really miss my Bootstrap components and layout. It allows me to not have to build my own layout, and that's really nice.
Hey, great Video. Has your opinion of Editor X changed in the last year? Or do you think that Editor X is now perhaps even better than Webflow? Thank you!
Man, this is tough...I love Webflow because it can do pretty much anything as far as designing a website. But the integrations of Wix are hard to overlook. I feel if I can get past the limitations for the short term, Wix will grow and do almost, if not everything that Webflow can do. So as a designer, I'd probably lean toward Wix hoping to future proof myself and not have to redesign sites over again.
New features are being released every day, at lightspeed. Just since you have made this video, many more features have been added. I think WIX is on the way to dominate the market since it comes not just with the editor but with the whole apps ecosystem.
How do you think this type of accessibility of web design will impact pricing projects in the future? One issue I see if that if a client can do it why pay a designer or if they see the payment option of a wix site at 30$ why would they pay hundreds or thousands or whatever x amount for you to do what they “think” they could do.
Webflow is a great platform. I recommend the use of this tool all the time. But can be stepped for designers who don't know anything about CSS. Even though I thanks Webflow everyday for its philosophy.
stumbled upon this video, and I must say I agree with you. As a pure designer, X is easier to use. Webflow is for when I want more complex interactions.
Hey Beautiful Designers out there! I'm currently learning Webflow through Webflow University, and I'm loving it so far. I came across EditorX, and I would have loved Ran to talk about the price for example, or the ability to export the code (or even generate it) in EditorX, how is the ecommerce feature ?( can you build a theme for Shopify for example, like in Webflow+Udesly), maybe compare both CMS with an example (to definitely which one is the fastest to setup and the most stable), etc. Any thoughts on all this people?
Hi. I’ve used Webflow for 2 years and the CMS was very pricey. I quickly maxed out out the base level and had to pay for additional CMS functionality. It was becoming a real pain. Wix’s Editor X CMS comes with no restrictions and additional price levels. So far I haven’t encountered any limitations whatsoever. I hope Wix keeps it this way. In terms of functionality, I easily made the transition to Editor X’s CMS. They both offer the same basic functionality. Although, if you are building a site for a customer, Webflow’s self-service Editor is very handy (perhaps Wix will build a similar tool?). In terms of speed, I have no answer to that question. I haven't compared them. My main motivation was price.
Tried both. EditorX is great for designers. Webflow is decent but the u.i is bit clunky. My opinions of course. Suggest you tried both before deciding. But in the long run, EditorX will beat webflow.
I am confused about one main thing because webflow and Editor X come with hosting - I already purchased hosting from site-ground and I want to stay with them. My issue is that I am really not liking Wordpress... I did get Divi but I am finding it runs slow on my end and I still have to work a lot within Wordpress with Divi. I prefer a website builder that is visual - like a blank canvas where I can move things around easily - placement , resizing, putting in videos and animations right on the page easily. Editor X and Webflow site builders look like they might be something to consider but it seems I cannot use the editor without getting their hosting plans... What site builder can I use that is really visual and flexible - that I can create my site with but keep my hosting [siteground]???? [OR] am I misunderstanding and I can use Editor X or Webflow without having their hosting?
While Wix editor looks cool I think that Webflow has a totally different vision and power. It's made to be a VDE (visual development environment) and that's the big power in my opinion. I personally don't like the idea of the layers and bringing up or down to bring an element. This needs to be done through z-index and position because that's how the web works and I think designers need to understand the web in order to create for the web. Again, that's just my opinion. After all we all have the freedom to create awesome things.
The editor x is still in beta.. ans you need to know that you can add the Couto! Interaction of you want through code which is pretty simple to add and the code is also available in the Google
Editor X is by Wix? Interesting... they sell themselves on custom breakpoints, but I had such a hard time trying Wix on client sites... that puts me at arm's length with Editor X... I am a business person (and a good one!) so of course I'll give Editor X a fair shake... thanks for sharing this information!
Sadly just noticed that the basic version 1/3 more expensive than regular wix. And of you do design for client that cuts your profit margins quite a bit. Even at the basic plan you can get a decent Wordpress site with 1 year Wix subscribtion. And majority of people won't even use most of the functions wix uses. Maybe if you have a shop, or big company and you change stuff often. But majority of smaller companies that is not for them.
Thanks for the review. It would be nice to compare the coding part of Wix vs WebFlow. I'm currently using corvid with Wix and I didn't understand what are the similar options in webFlow (adding code in the browser and in the backend)
Is it possible to download the editor? Or the free downloadable version? I am trying to make an integration for a system and I am researching more on the subject. Can you point me to one? Thanks in advance
I not sure am I right and here just commented down my opinions... Maybe, the embedded custom code which a features in webflow have become their monopoly patent. Thus, the Editor X still need to figure out or negotiate the cake of it... @@maybe
Making it easier isnt always better... Cool for basic things but removing it to far from how normal css works is just going to make bugs on more complex projects... But come on webflow, get a grip and make a stylesheet and svg editior
I literally bought webflow's plan 1 h ago and I only now find out about x editor..😅 it seems that if they both want to strive they should differentiate, more than be in competition, with wix going all no code webflow should probably become even more a platform for learning html and code structure and parameters while coding visually
