So much to contemplate here……. as always You leave us wanting to educate ourselves further by following your trails of speculations and factual interpretations letting us free to contemplate………..yet my first thought about the artist herself is seemingly “we want to box one in always “when creativity is screaming to be unleashed…..

"Until I was twelve years old I led this wandering life, fishing and swimming...and making moccasins. I was then sent to school for three years in [McGrawville], but was declared to be wild-they could do nothing with me." - Edmonia Lewis

After that, her brother “Sunrise” struck Gold Rush, paid for her studies and she excelled. She persevered. She became quite wealthy. Later, Lewis painted a honeymoon portrait of Frederick Douglass and his second wife, Suffragette Helen Pitts Douglass, on tour in Italy. The Pope blessed Lewis’s work. In short, Edmonia Lewis was the most successful artist of the 19th century you’ve never heard of!

Another artist seeking escape from American bigotry in Europe. That's a subject in itself.

And vise versa. Going somewhere different is a common solution.
