Chas n Dave singing a lovely nostalgic song with some old pictures of the place they're singing about. Most of it is gone now... not just the buildings, but the people and a whole way of life..
Edmonton born and bred. Moved away when I was 18. But it’ll always be in my heart. Lived off Town Road, not far from where Chas was born. It’s changed so much now. And not for the better. 😢
I'm an Edmonton girl born and raised. My nan knew chas and dave and thier mum. Chas lived round the corner from my dad. Only got to see them the once at the millfield theatre..... Bloody excellent night!
Im an edmonton girl. Lovely to see the old pictures takes me back. Moved out now. You can take the girl out of Edmonton but you cant take Edmonton out of the girl. Much love peeps x
As an old Tottenham boy that song and those pictures bought back memories! ... nearly bought tears to my eyes. As Mike says the buildings, the way of life and above all the people have all gone.
Great film. Enfield certainly got their own way by destroying the market town that Edmonton once was .Edmonton is steeped in history. Enfield had nothing just a few upmarket streets. When I walk down to the green now I look past the concrete and just think of the idiot architect who thought this was his idea of improvement . Thank goodness they have restored the Nash terrace at least some sense has prevailed .
Born north Middlesex hospital lived at wallbrook house bounces road went to Eldon playschool infants and junior and secondary school loved pickets lock and loved going to the green with my mum and nan I'm fully Edmonton and for life Spurs 👍🏼🇬🇧
RIP Chas... Great video - I could watch videos like this for HOURS. Wonderful memories of a place that, once upon a time had such CHARACTER. What's it got now? CONCRETE. I grew up in Tiverton Road (went to Silver Street School, until Wilbury Way School was opened), and Mum and I went to The Green for nearly all of our shopping (or, sometimes, Silver Street). We moved to Bush Hill Park when I was eleven (1955), but still did frequent shopping trips to The Green. Always got our (big) Christmas trees there and, when I got my own car, we used to tie them to the roof, to take them home. Two other significant memories. I once played drums on the stage of The Empire (might have been the Granada, by then), with the band I was in (can't remember the event, maybe just a so-called local talent spot), AND, in 1963, I saw The Everly Brothers at The Regal. The SUPPORT act was The Rolling Stones! They had just released "Come On". The audience went mad for The Stones, and weren't bothered much about The Everlys! Anyone have any similar memories? Sorry to ramble.
Brings back so many memories. Born in Amersham Avenue - mum dragged me to Caters before I was old enough to go to school, Disney films at the Regal, Pymmes Park, The PPI - was still going there after Sunday League football in the mid 90's, Tower Gym at the Charles Lamb Institue - trained there 1987-2007. Nights out at the Horse and Groom before moving on to the clubs in Tottenham. A whole different and far better world which I miss so much.
Not just Edmonton Green, but Upper Edmonton with the Regal Cinema & Pymmes Park......oh such lovely memories of how Edmonton once used to be........sadly now so run down and unrecognisable........Noted the Charity Hall in Church Street where Chas used to rehearse when he was in another group with Billy Halsey & Reg Hawkins......!
Thanks for the memories. I was 12 when we moved from Pretoria Rd to oz back in 81. I keep in contact with some school friends in the uk and they have all said Edmonton is terrible now and they don't go there unless they have too. So sad. I remember going to pymmes park with my sister and friend, playing in the lifts in the big flats and I remember the fruit n veg stalks along the high street was it? There was a lady that had a giant poodle that would sleep under her cart. Fantastic memories
Brilliant. Dad went to Raynham Road, Mum to Brettenham Road school's, I went to County. And of course, the legends Chas n Dave. Moved away but go back to the area to what is now the world's best stadium. COYS...
Yes and they say things always get better, little evidence of it here as in my old home in Barking. What is defined as 'progress' doesn't mean its better just different for good or bad.
love the work you've done. i'm a boy from old ladbroke and raised in edmonton ...love the history of edmonton. they even use to have boat races in edmonton!!!
how I miss the old Edmonton Green used to hang around in pymmes park and watched many a group in the granada on epire hill(i think ) went back to Edmonton last year could have cried
What great photos, I was born in Edmonton and remember all those places. We use to drink in the PPI. I went to Eldon Road School. My Mum and her Brothers and Sisters all went to Raynham Road School.
I live in Edmonton now, and I like it. Partly because it's multi-cultural and down to earth. It's still a great place, and it's getting some re-development.
so sad. "i like it because the old community has been gutted, and now it's full of a fragmented gloabal population with zero social cohesion or shared tradition". Are you even English?
0.35 Empire became the Granada. Used to see 2 movies there and then go to the Regal cinema and watch 2 more...Hehe. Raised in Kenninghall Road and went to Brettenham Road school and then to Montague high school and became their first head boy. SO many memories...Live in OZ now.
They were London Planes. Their bark used to peel and you could take big chunks out of them. As kids we'd dry the bark and start fires down the park to keep warm. I don't suppose that what killed 'em off though. It was probably the car pollution. Lovely video and sweet nostalgic song.
Thanks Mike for this. My father was born in Croyland Road and I remember so clearly visiting my Grandparents, getting off the 128 bus, walking up Balham Road, past the paper mill. The place had a terrific atmosphere and I always got excited when my father took me down the Green to the Market. My favourite toy shop was Wheatley's. Oh I could go on and on. My father was so proud when I passed out of Hendon Police College and was posted to Edmonton Police Station in 1975. The place is now a complete dump ! Im glad my relatives are not around to see it !!
I grew up there until i was 25 left in 1973,went to Eldon road school lived in Bounces road.i enjoyed it there as teenager. My dad woul sit on doorstep with front door open on a summer night and feel safe.Mum would shop every day at the green. Not quite the same now
Mike Parfitt All i remember is the stall was under an arch, and there was a cafe nearby, the person i worked for was named Phillips he had a shellfish shop at the bottom of White Hart Lane near the BR station.
my old friend's father was the 'Philips' you talk of. She used to help out on his stall and her fingers often became nearly frozen solid. She lives in Spain now, I believe.
Edmonton green had so much character then a lovely English town on the outskirts of London And look at it now a unrecognisable overcrowded multi cultural concrete jungle and they call it progress? Such a shame
Gazi Hossain - Chas went to Eldon Road school too (and me). www.express.co.uk/life-style/garden/513123/Chas-n-Dave-s-Chas-Hodges-on-gardening The other Edmonton school I've included in this video is Raynham.
I worked at the green with my grandad Charlie Tipping flogging fruit and veg for pocket money in the sixties. Uncle Dennis had a shop under the arches. Went back there in 2018 and could have cried at the changes and the population difference. If you are thinking of going back to visit please don’t it will sadden you. Though i was in Afghanistan.
@@Ukeylad I agree.Everybody knew who the criminals were and if you didn't mess with them, you'd not come to grief.Cross Keys was a rough house sometimes. I grew up in Edmonton from 64-79.Then we moved to Waltham Cross.
I think that might be my great grandfather selling hot potatoes about 58 seconds in. Shame I can't see the whole of his face! Does anyone have the original photo?
I agree with you, I went back after 50 years, it looked dirty, run down, where have a the white faces gone, don't think I''ll ever go there again. I can still see it in my memory, that will have to do.
