First class is to welcome the community to the learning experience and give out dates for the following classes.
Starting off by going into the history of Spearfishing and freediving
History shows that humans have been freediving for food for about 8,000 years. Freediving is sometimes called Apnea, a Greek word for “without breathing,” and has been an important livelihood in some cultures.Today, as a sport, freediving is not about raising adrenaline levels and racing hearts, but instead relies on the ability to relax completely - mentally and physically.
Spearfishing has ancient origins with early humans using sharpened sticks or primitives spears to catch fish and other aquatic animals for sustenance. You can even trace it back to ancient civilizations such as Greeks and Romans who have references to spearfishing in their historical records. Spearfishing played a crucial role in the livelihoods of polynesian and pacific islander communities. These cultures developed unique techniques such as freediving and using specialized tools like fish hooks and barbed spears. With the advent of modern technology, spearfishing underwent significant changes. Traditional wooden spears were replaced by metal spears and diving equipment such as masks, fins and snorkels became commonplace. In the mid 20th century spearfishing evolved into a competitive sport with organized competitions and tournaments emerging globally. Today spearfishing is a popular recreational activity enjoyed by enthusiasts around the world. It combines elements of sport, adventure, and sustainable harvesting. Spearfishing continues to evolve, influenced by technological advancements, environmental awareness and the efforts of communities to strike a balance between enjoying the activity and preserving marine life.
Blue Tuna Spearfishing was founded by Matt Davidson. He is passionate about sharing his love for the ocean and everything it has to offer to anyone he can. Starting as a surfer he grew his love for being in the ocean. In 2006, Matt spent a year and a half traveling abroad. While in Samoa, he witnessed two locals diving with polespears. He took a break from surfing, as the waves were flat, and had a pole spear made.
Diving and spearfishing became a priority in his life, traveling and meeting all kinds of people that helped him on his journey. As a person that enjoys creating he was able to understand how spearguns work and help develop spearguns that are an improvement from what was offered at the time. Mainly he wanted everyone else to experience the life changing love for spearfishing and freediving.
In 2008, He started selling spearfishing equipment from his garage by appointment only. As time went he developed his business and continued to grow the spearfishing community around him moving him to bigger and bigger buildings. He does not plan on doing a franchise because then you lose personal touch and connection with the community. He also wanted to make it easier for the community to get a hold of freediving equipment and trust that their money being spent is a great commitment. He is not just someone trying to hit numbers and expand, he just wants to keep sharing his love and passion so more people can enjoy the ocean that is just around the corner.
