Lennox Owino, a King Morgridge Fellowship Scholar and PACE Leadership Award recipient, is recognized for his engagement in education access in his hometown of Nairobi, Kenya. Mr. Owino believes that access to education is essentially to bridging the poverty gap in low income communities and works to represent the interests of international students on campus at the University of Wisconsin to ensure equal access to academic resources. Owino is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is among 6 young people from Africa and South East Asia who were awarded a King Morgridge Fellowship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison thanks to their individual efforts in poverty alleviation in their home countries. He was selected due to his engagement in bridging the education access gap in his home country, Kenya. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Lennox, thumbs up for the good presentation...I felt that you should have mentioned the underlying problems with African Education System. Education based on theory and not practice which focuses on producing workers and not job creators. Graduates who can remember and not create. Doctors whose work is to prescribe medicine manufactured from the west and not to come up with vaccines that can cure malaria, Governments that focus on imports rather that exports that will generate more income to the country since they fear supporting and enabling home grown products etc. African Education was design by colonial masters to produce labourers who were to work in their strategically placed industries in the name of multinationals. We continue to produce halfbaked graduates who can only survive when they get employed. Majority of us African graduates lack initiative and entrepreneur skills to start up new venture which could could revolutionise African continent. We concentrate on theories in exams and miss practical part. We have to reverse this trend and forge a new frontier that focusses on production of goods and services. There's still hope...

As Kenyans we need to define education and is most definitely not for jobs because no matter what the politicians lie to us there will never be enough jobs, Because the colonial education system which we have in Kenya and much of Africa so no.

Imagine how much better the world would be if everyone in the world had access to an education that maximized their potential. Now imagine what you can do to help make that happen.
