Powerful! He's giving voice to concerns I've had for years, particularly in the section on the seven movements/elements. I've always thought the tech optimism was limited and limiting leaving so much out. Thanks Dr. Harvey for opening Marx up for me in this way!
"Everyone knows that there are no true forests in England." Karl Marx Das Kapital Part 8. So far, this is how I interpret it; Marx wrote Das Kapital in response to Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. Wealth of Nations was written to quantify genocide in the Americas and enslaving people from Africa. Britain destroyed their entire old growth forest and leveled their ecosystems. Now, they needed a new place to destroy, but investors were aware of what needed to happen (genocide) and they were nervous about repercussions and consequences. Smith's book must have been what they needed to begin the process of wiping out entire people's and cultures. This is just a thought that I jotted down. I accept this is nothing more than a guess on my part, but Marx was an interesting dude.
Would have loved to hear the last bit of his conversation with the lady who told him about the human trafficking laws and immigration before the video ended.
note to self- do this chapter again after you come back home, stopped at 1:12:59, just before Section 2, but redo the whole video and make more points and write down more points conveyed by the professor that are interesting. Especially the beginning since you didnt fully grasp it.
Lewontin has a very nice desscription of the development of biological thought along side that of mercantilism. I'm not sure he's the first, but ppl usually use chemistry and physics as examples so maybe. But it is wonderful in any case. The book is "Not in Our Genes". the pdf is online somewhere.
And yet here you are, listening to a scholar who’s been teaching Marx for forty plus years, having passed on his knowledge to thousands and thousands of students. But I guess when you’re unable to counter the arguments, all you’re left with are insults 😂
