Educor once stood as a monument of hope for thousands of students looking for an affordable and reputable education at a private college. With scores of campuses around the country, it was the largest private education supplier in Southern Africa and, for several years, it earned itself a good reputation. But in recent years, Educor has become notorious for poor quality education and non-compliance with government regulations. In February this year, the Department of Higher Education finally deregistered the company, sending students and educators into a spiral. Despite several deadline extensions, Educor had failed to submit crucial financial records and tax clearance certificates, leaving the Department with no choice but to shut it down. For many critics, this was a long time coming - but students are left in limbo.

wow R5000 a month for this room?? Wow it's crazy business. Please try to make a documentary of the high prices of res accomodation especially in Hatfield around Pretoria paying over R5000 to sleep on bunk beds like a jail.

In Cape Town CBD, that sounds about right sadly. I know the apartment flat across the field with homeless people there at CPUT Cape Town campus had like 20m^2 apartments going for over R15000 a month in 2016. Visited friend there and three of us in the flat filled up the entire living room, fourth dude took up the makeshift kitchen, fifth wasn't allowed into the apartment, security limited you and kept coming to check that you didn't have too many in apartment (and fined you R2000 each time you broke the rule, was insane). You need to get to that minimum hurdle of around R7k+ for a bedroom for anything close to CBD, R6k is closest you'll get is like Sunningdale (and then you'll spend R35-40, so around R800 per month to class via MyCiti, takes about an hour one way. I did this from Table View for my two degrees near a decade ago). That said, do agree R5k for that is still crazy as that as a minimum offering shouldn't really exist. Looking at latest res costs, it seems in Cape Town campus the cheapest is R4k, norm is like R5.5k. Probably still better than this. Was also a bit crazy how much better female res were than mens (specifically talking about City Edge Residence, and some for UCT).

I 2nd that. My theory is that the NSFAS residence allowances is driving rentals up. Which is straining us nonNSFAS and non-bursary funded students. The NSFAS accommodation allowance is high so that it incentivise property owners for dealing with the bureaucracy that comes with being accredited. What I don’t understand is why should cash students pay those amount as there are no accrued rent payments and administration that comes with us. There used to be a cash rate and NSFAS rate now these private accomplishments are just raising prices to equal the NSFAS rate. Something must be done about this

@@thisisntokozo R68000 for 2 years including registration plus I had to repeat a module ( which the lecture made me fail because we had a dispute artistically since they wanted to own my creative works and they banned me from using the studios but that’s a story for another day ) my grandma paid R7000 for reg and r8000 to r9000 for that module. Now I’m studying something else and it’s my final year

As long as the institution was still accredited when you were attending, it's still a valid degree. Issue is more employers now having it as negative, but think so many have degrees from there that it should be fine as you also have a job history at this point I hope.

This is scary. Money and time that can't be reimbursed. Reputations questioned or tarnished because of incompetence. This is all a result of greed. Not wanting to sow in as much as you reap.

Well the fees can be reimbursed, Educor needs to refund all currently enrolled students. The time spent on it though is going to be difficult, and now there's also tens of thousands of students needing more uni/college space that doesn't exist. Population now is way higher than 30 years ago, and job market requires way more education to get in, yet basically no new universities or colleges from government.

@@Masterrunescapeer The promise to reimburse and actually reimbursing someone is different. You can't trust anything they say. They don't stick to their promises. Even if they do, what's the time line? Will it be in time for students to jump ship and carry on with their current momentum? Will students who have had to move be reimbursed for relocating? It's not just tuition that needs to be reimbursed.

Couple of years ago, I went for an interview for an admin position at Damelin in Cape Town. At the time I was working on contract basis at Stellenbosch University. So glad Damelin rejected me. Back then I thought, something was not right at that place. So glad I stayed on at a public university. I still work for a public university, till this day.

Some if you here blame government for a Private institution that was run by incompetent individuals. City Varsity is a Private institution for all I remember, they wouldn't even accept NSFAS, Bursaries etc. Ridiculous amount of fees that they used to charge I'm shocked that this the end of their journey after all.

This happened at Damelin centurion, CBD and menlyn as well, just found out one day that doors are closed and left either no communication for weeks on end then told to report to a new campus. Also being told that their certification will qualify

Yes they charge us R5000 in these private accommodations whether sharing or not .I am in uwc in CPT and the same thing is happening, and these institutions know exactly what's going on but since they also benefit they don't follow up the matter.

i studies through damelin - the diploma i have is absolutely useless - maybe its better to close down these places, they only in it for the money, not for the persons future. And Damelin was absolutely useless, waited months for the books, rude lecturers have no clue what they are doing etc. Carte Blanche did a story about Damelin

With as little as a facility, registered assessor and course material you too can become a key stakeholder in a registered private institution, you dont even need to have a matric to be the owner, CEO, CFO, PM etc. that's what puts us in the position we are in today. The objective of most private institutions profiteers is simply to make money, and when that is the objective, one can with a more easier conscious employ on a need to fulfill basis and deliver the bare minimum to optimize profits as long as the moderation passes through everything else is a formality (even the learning part).
