- Composer: Edvard Hagerup Grieg (15 June 1843 -- 4 September 1907)
- Orchestra: New Philharmonia Orchestra
- Conductor: Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos
- Soloist: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
- Year of recording: 1965 (live)
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, written in 1868.
00:00 - I. Allegro molto moderato
11:59 - II. Adagio - attacca
18:04 - III. Allegro moderato molto e marcato
Grieg was born on Norway's fjord-coast in the same year that Leipzig's storied Konservatorium opened under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn. By the time Ole Bull, the Norse Paganini, persuaded Grieg's parents to send their gifted 15-year old there for instruction, Mendelssohn was already dead for 11 years. His successors were solid, German-schooled academicians whom Edvard hated, and against whom he rebelled. Ever after, he made five years in Leipzig sound like a prison sentence. That he learned so much from allegedly hidebound and uncaring teachers validates the soundness of their instruction. Most notably, Grieg absorbed the salient stylistic traits of Mendelssohn and Schumann (who taught there briefly before moving to Dresden). Indeed, his Piano Concerto could be called Schumannesque (likewise in A minor) without invalidating its Scandinavian character or Lisztian flourishes. It can also be compared to Carl Smulders's Piano Concerto in A minor (uploaded on this channel). Despite posthumous scorn for Grieg's large solo oeuvre during much of the twentieth century, his natural habitat was the keyboard. Grieg composed this music in 1868 for himself to play; however, Edmund Neupert (to whom the concerto is dedicated) played the first public performance in Copenhagen on 3 April 1869.
A government grant enabled Grieg to visit Italy in 1869, where he showed the work to Liszt at his residence near Rome. The kindly Abbé played it at sight with unconcealed pleasure (brilliantly, too, although for Grieg "rather too quickly" during the opening part). Liszt encouraged him to "go on, and don't let anything scare you," but tastelessly suggested that the second subject of the first movement be played by a trumpet instead of cellos. Grieg didn't restore it to the strings until his revision of 1905-1906.
- The concerto opens with a drum-roll and solo flourish, after which the winds play a simple, unsophisticated main theme that the piano preempts, and embroiders at length, Allegro, molto moderato. The cello subject (più lento -- a little slower) is contrastingly "soulful." Trumpets usher in the development, and later on the reprise. A solo cadenza comes just before the end.
- In the second movement, the key shifts from A minor to D flat major. This structurally uncomplicated Adagio in 3/8 time begins introspectively with muted strings. The piano rhapsodizes until a dramatically angular version of the main theme shatters the mood.
- Eventually, calm is restored, and a quiet ending leads without pause to the third movement another quick-but-not-too-quick movement in A minor, additionally marked marcato, whose structure combines sonata and rondo. The piano introduces a main theme based on the 2/4 rhythm of a Norwegian folk dance, the halling. The second subject is quirkier and more elaborate but no less folk-like. The solo flute initiates a tranquil episode, after which the main theme returns for extended development. A short solo cadenza precedes Grieg's long-delayed transition from minor to major for yet another dance, this one in 3/4 time at an accelerated tempo. During a final cadenza, Lisztian bravura blows away any lingering traces of Schumann.
The piano concerto is dedicated: "To Edmund Neupert".

That was one of the violin sonatas, not this concerto. Liszt to Grieg" ”Now let us go on with [your] sonata”. Grieg takes up the story: Now you must bear in mind, in the first place, that he had never seen or heard the sonata, and in the second place that it was a sonata with a violin part, now above, now below, independent of the pianoforte part. And what does Liszt do? He plays the whole thing, root and branch, violin and piano, nay, more, for he played fuller, more broadly. The violin got its due right in the middle of the piano part. He was literally over the whole piano at once, without missing a note, and how he did play! With grandeur, beauty, genius, unique comprehension. I think I laughed - laughed like an idiot”

The faster than usual tempo allows one thing: Edvard Grieg could write music in larger forms that would allow his melodies to shine forth like precious gems. The musical structure of the concerto is a marvel of construction (that aspect is seldom mentioned). Even the auspicious piano at opening measures finds itself recurring in the development section. The reason I extol this concerto is because the beauty sounds SPONTANEOUS never contrived.

Kiitos Edvard. Heti alussa I-piano lähtee tosi ylhäältä; viidennen apuviivan päältä, voimakkaalla fortella, voimakkaat staggaatot. II-viulu säestää. Norjan tuntureilta alas. Voimakas kotimaan maiseman tulkinta. Valtavasti voimaa. Koko teos kertoo Norjan maisemaa; solisevat tunturipurot. Rauhallista veden virtaamista, kunnes äkkiä , pienehkö koski nostaa forten ja rakentaa vilkkautta. Pianon eläytyminen, viulujen tuoma seesteisyys, välillä vasket tuo omaa tunnelmaa, esim. jylhiä kallioita. Syvää kansallis-maiseman tulkintaa. Kuten Suomessa, Sibelius.

Does anyone know if there were technical limitations to this recording in terms of lenght? :) I think the finale seems a bit rushed somehow...

Grieg wrote a concerto with an abundance of unsurpassed melody. Nonetheless a vibrant structure holds the piece together with logic and emotional drama. Not one second is superfluous. Every note contributes to an unforgettable experience.

The cadenza in the first movement is pretty much the definition of "I paid for the whole piano, I'm using the whole piano".

This is supposed to be one of the easier piano concertos in the rep. I can't see why. Sure looks hard to me. Also, this concerto literally killed someone once: the pianist Simon Barere dropped dead during a performance of this piece in 1951 ("DUM! da-da-DUM! da-da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DEAD!"). Betcha Beethoven can't say that about any of his concertos.
@fearlessleader3489

Yeah it is one of the "easier" ones but truly none of them are easy and all have difficulties in their own way
@zachguo6372
@zachguo6372 3 года назад
It’s all relative. It’s “easier” than say the Liszt, Chopin, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninov concertos for example in terms of technique

What about Haydn's various concertos. I've had a listen to a few of them and they sound not so technically demanding as this one is. There's heavy ornamentation in part of one movement I am thinking of (the third movement from a D major concerto), but that doesn't seem overly virtousic either. Maybe everyone is referring to romantic repertoire? I'm a classical pianist by nature as well (mostly have played romantic works), so I am fairly familiar with how piano technique works.
