I've never understood why this painting affects me so, but having heard some of its background, I think it's meant to express dread, loneliness, hopelessness, and regret. So, it's no wonder that I feel those things when looking at it. BUT, knowing that Munch felt what he did while painting it makes me feel somehow less alone, and that's a small comfort.

Rish...don't feel alone my friend iv'e been hospitalized the last 3 days for a healable condition..but during my 2nd night i had got visions of this picture in my head then i remembered how that painting always was somewheres in the shadows of my memorys since ive seen it as a teenager i believe that his expression into that painting itself was sooo intense with his feelings and illness at the time ..and being the artist that he was...he was able to imbed MANY of folk w this expression that we can relate to when we come across darker corners in life...it's a beautiful thing that soo many people can see that image soo often just gotta love Art ! !

Agreed. I get similar feelings. I believe anyone who has depression. Can relate to this peice. Anyone who has suffered traumatic loss can relate to the peice. I love this painting. He gave anxiety and pain a face in this painting.

It looks like he tried to paint a dog with long ears but it looked bad and other people thought it was a good painting of a human so he went along with it.

i bought a copied version and it's on my wall now. somehow feel at peace looking at it, especially when I feel anxious, i guess the artist did a great job in grasping the nature of the chaos in life.

we the fans of edvard munch we know we share the same world we are in fact his somatic cells ~ like a very close relative he is more intimate than family because all this is about a rite de passage ... we got stuck in japan art system extreme orient the far away country cradle of our civic style consumerism culture ~ working insects tired humains geared man dead soul heart and paralised mind cc .

What I really adore about art is its ability to surprise you at any given point. It can take years to grab your attention or it can be an instant realisation. ‘The Scream’, took me many years but I’ve found an almost comfort in it as of recent. I’m as surprised as anyone but again, that’s art.

This painting reminds me of my days of mental illness. I had early symptoms of schizophrenia. There were figures around me. Like there is a figure in this painting. I was not sure that they are real or not, like this painting we cannot judge. I stayed horrified. That phase was something else. No wonder why I love this painting.

when you COGITO ERGO SUM i become myself and the great love that the 19th century had for orient is back darkly reflected in this painting by a scandinavia n painter ~~ if you recall the contemporary japan stamp style of graphic painting in water color like hokusai ~ this imagery is always a reminder of a magic moment of revelation : in the country of the soleil levant ~ un pond ~ un paysage campagnard voie vers la montagne + la rue serpente de la riviere qui se disolve loin dans les misteres de far away ~~ et puis van gogh vincent a designe la meme image mais sans cette peur animalique en face d une revelatione extreme ... dieu dans son ciel a la rage de l ane devenu ame vide de coeur et d animal ... < . > ~~ the society in an one all was sick and tired of stress just as today but it was hot that epoque nowadays we live a frozen life . cc .

Whenever I look at "The Scream", I feel this creeping sense of dread and anxiety, like a vague and intangable feeling lingering deep in my guts. Nothing about this picture is horrifying or disturbing, and artists have used far more shocking imagery both before and after The Scream, but nothing does it so... subconsciously. Everything about the paintings just screams "unrest", no pun intended.

Now I know why everytime i see the painting, the intense colour of the sky the multitude of lines curving in all directions give me such dread and uneasiness. This is the very depiction of anxiety. Props to Munch for capturing it so well

Loved it - I'm taking an online course at MoMA and have to create a presentation about a theme and I think this video would be a great asset/inclusion to 1/9th of the presentation as I am highlighting 8 other artists lìving and dead in my multimedia presentation. I would give you credit for this contribution and it would be seen by 10s of thousands of interested fellow students, artists, art lovers and the instructors of my MoMA course. In addition, I would like to interview you and get a bibliography of your sources to document all your hard work and contribution. Thank you - I enjoyed your video. The painting is how I felt when I was ten and my world was falling apart.

Around the time Judge Daniel Schreber had his famous "breakdown." The Judge screamed at what he called "improvisational ppl" or improvisational just-in-time existence per Thomas Pynchon's famous opening lines, "a scream came across the sky. It has happened before but there is nothing to compare it to now." And it happened since with the jets screaming across NYC being just 1 recent example. Post 911, I heard a distorted human screaming like a siren around 2003 until 2005. It was far from auditory hallucination or psychosis. It stopped only for something worse to begin. Like 9 months of total sleeplessness w/o stim or any drugs. A living proxy for death minus all the DSM cliches. The Zoolander nightmare was only beginning for the newbie who went through any number of events of being the "other" or "that guy."

Lol to understand this painting all you need to know is that whilst crossing a fjord in oslow with 2 friends, he noticed the blood-red sky resulting from the blast of Krakatoa. Immediately he froze on the bridge as his friends walked on later telling of an overpowering sense of dredd and anxiety he felt witnessing such a sky, and a sense of nature screaming eternally. Seriously...its that literal

This painting fills me with terror. I have been learning about outsider art, and the art of patients with psychological disabilities. The energy is always so pure and electric in these kind of works. For example the works of Séraphine Louis mesmerize me. Also Jackson Pollack did art while in a psychiatric hospital. They are bizarrely haunting. Can you suggest more artists?
