What I find perplexing about this is that this basically echoes how the woman in Billy's story distracted the vampire, but Bella only cut herself a little and the woman in the story basically immolated herself for the same effect.

Edward was in love with her and the others were her friends so of course they’d protect her. As far as all the adjectives used to describe Bella, they’re kind of nonsensical. She’s not exactly a likable or exciting character but “weird” and “selfish” is a bit unfounded. She was more neutral or bland if anything.
