Forster uses the terms "muddle" and "mystery" to describe India in the novel, with the English characters like Fielding seeing India as a "muddle" while figures like Mrs. Moore and Godbole view it as a "mystery." Forster himself is portrayed as using "orientalizing" terms to describe India as a formless, primitive "muddle" that Westerners cannot comprehend.
