Edwards syndrome, also known as trisomy 18, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of a third copy of all or part of chromosome 18.[3] Many parts of the body are affected.[3] Babies are often born small and have heart defects.[3] Other features include a small head, small jaw, clenched fists with overlapping fingers, and severe intellectual disability.[3]
Most cases of Edwards syndrome occur due to problems during the formation of the reproductive cells or during early development.[3] The rate of disease increases with the mother's age.[3] Rarely, cases may be inherited from a person's parents.[3] Occasionally, not all cells have the extra chromosome, known as mosaic trisomy, and symptoms in these cases may be less severe.[3] An ultrasound during pregnancy can increase suspicion for the condition, which can be confirmed by amniocentesis.[2]
Treatment is supportive.[2] After having one child with the condition, the risk of having a second is typically around one percent.[2] It is the second-most common condition due to a third chromosome at birth, after Down syndrome.[4]
Edwards syndrome occurs in around 1 in 5,000 live births.[3] Some studies suggest that more babies that survive to birth are female.[2] Many of those affected die before birth.[3] Survival beyond a year of life is around 5-10%.[3] It is named after English geneticist John Hilton Edwards, who first described the syndrome in 1960.[5] Children born with Edwards' syndrome may have some or all of these characteristics: kidney malformations, structural heart defects at birth (i.e., ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus), intestines protruding outside the body (omphalocele), esophageal atresia, intellectual disability, developmental delays, growth deficiency, feeding difficulties, breathing difficulties, and arthrogryposis (a muscle disorder that causes multiple joint contractures at birth).[7][8]
Some physical malformations associated with Edwards' syndrome include small head (microcephaly) accompanied by a prominent back portion of the head (occiput), low-set, malformed ears, abnormally small jaw (micrognathia), cleft lip/cleft palate, upturned nose, narrow eyelid openings (blepharophimosis), widely spaced eyes (ocular hypertelorism), drooping of the upper eyelids (ptosis), a short breast bone, clenched hands, choroid plexus cysts, underdeveloped thumbs and/or nails, absent radius, webbing of the second and third toes, clubfoot or rocker bottom feet, and in males, undescended testicles.[7][8]
In utero, the most common characteristic is cardiac anomalies, followed by central nervous system anomalies such as head shape abnormalities. The most common intracranial anomaly is the presence of choroid plexus cysts, which are pockets of fluid on the brain. These are not problematic in themselves, but their presence may be a marker for trisomy 18.[9][10] Sometimes, excess amniotic fluid or polyhydramnios is exhibited.[7] Although uncommon in the syndrome, Edwards syndrome causes a large portion of prenatally diagnosed cases of Dandy-Walker malformation.[11][12]

No wonder my OBGYN wanted to do an amniocentesis on my baby! I was 40 years old when I had her! Thank God, she was fine but not without mishap. I suffered my 1st gallbladder attack when she was 4 days past her due date. I went to the hospital and she was losing heartbeats! They did an emergency C-section and discovered that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck several times and a normal delivery would have strangled her! Also, the placenta was 25% detached and she only weighed 4lbs. 11 oz! But she was perfectly healthy! She’s now 28 years old and has given me a beautiful granddaughter who’ll be 3 years old in about 10 days! No one ever mentioned Edwards syndrome during my pregnancy. Whew! I guess I dodged a few bullets!

My aunt had to abort her 2nd child. He had Sevier deformations and edwards syndrome, his heart and lungs where outside of his body, he had clubbed feet and hands and a small head, he had no chnave of living if she was to give birth he could be ripped apart just by pushing, they only found out recently, and she's 5 months along...
