Here in the part of Ireland where I live, the salmon, sea trout and brown are almost as plentiful as ever, but eels which were present in huge numbers in all our local rivers almost died out completely about thirty years ago despite the fact that very few people here fished for them. Eels are very rare today and it looks like that similar to the salmon but far more serious, the death rate among the elvers at sea must be huge. It would be a shame if this fish were to die out for despite not being very popular with game fishermen, it is not only steeped in the folklore of the countryside, but it is a unique and fascinating fish.
Good basic vid Mad. I lived in Osnabruck for many years and now back in the UK. Smoked Eel is one of the best. I go coast fishing, we have a lot of coast. I never return and always eat them lol
Great video. As an America living in Germany, your channel inspired me to make my own youtube channel for fishing in Germany in English. - I only managed to catch 2 eels this year, do you think the population is getting lower over the last couple years, or am I just not having the best of luck catching them?
There's a very simple technique for handling eels that works very well. Wet your hands. Grab the eel by the head with one hand, and then grip it just further down with your other hand. Then with some reasonable pressure, run your second hand down it to the tail. Do it a few times, and the eel will go into a catatonic state for about 30-90 seconds, giving you time to get the hooks out without it getting you in a mess. Be careful though, they're nowhere near as tough as myths would have you believe. They deserve great care, especially if you do catch one in the UK.
I woukd like to know what bait you fishermen(and woman) use to catch eels...i use worms but some swear with chicken...or chickenliver...curious...what is, by your opinion, the best bait?
I’ve tried a lot of things and have only found two things consistently successful. Nightcrawlers aka Lob worms and strips of local bait fish. The strips of fish another the same size as worms and threaded on the hook. Whichever gets more bites I start to use more that evening.
Nice video lovely location I agree what you explained I use the same system, nice and easy nothing fancy and it works. I use garden worm and dead bleak whole. Thanks for sharing. 👌🇬🇧
This is very bad practice Eels are critically endangered. IF YOU FISH FOR EELS TAKE STEPS TO AVOID DEEP HOOKING THEM. There is no need to leave the hook in them if you don't deep hook them. There is a good chance a hook left inside the eel will kill it.
I wouldn’t recommend it. You are not increasing your chances by presenting two baits. If the eel are about they will find it. Chances of getting a tangled rig are much higher with a double paternoster. Keep it simple ;)
Yes! I get a lot of those comments. The catch you see in the video is a once a year catch if I’m lucky. Mostly 1-3 eels on a good night. But there is actually a lot of action being taken to restore the eel in Germany. I have to pay very high license and permit fees to be allowed to fish. That money goes into conserving glass eels and releasing them when they are big enough for rivers. I enjoy catch and release in fishing. But that is illegal in Germany. German conservation law doesn’t allow animal cruelty and fishing is in The same category as hunting. Catch to eat not for sport. Hence to get a fishing license in Germany you don’t just pay but have to take a 72 hour course with a written exam covering subject as fish conservation, laws, lake and river natural eco system and how they effect each other etc. the point I’m trying to make is that it’s not just a savage killing of Eels in masses and eating them. It’s an extremely regulated activity and the few eels I take home cost me a hell of a lot more than if I were to just buy them in a shop (which would support the mass fishing).
@@maxreichl394 What I saw when I lived there, was that the Germans are not as keen fishermen as the Brits. So there is plenty of catching to be had. Might be something to do with the trouble and stress of getting the permit
@@olafjensen4508 yes. There is not so much of a fishing scene here compared to UK. Having live in the UK for 21 years myself I also found that to the case. Getting the fishing license is a relatively long process in Germany with very strict rules. Having said that though, I have observed the fishing scene growing very fast in the last couple of years.
+jhon morris Hi! This is when the main fishing starts in Germany. For eels we start anytime in spring when weather is consistently 20 degrees celsius. Im curious why you ask? Is that a no no where you are from? Im very interested to know.
I fish for eels in the UK, purely for sport, all eels are treated with great care when caught, measured and weighed, and put back safely. As the common eel(Anguilla Anguilla)is endangered, it's illegal to remove any eels in Britain for the table, using as bait or keeping as pets! In my opinion eels are the hardest fighting British fish(pound for pound) and the most interesting.
Sam Caddick Passmore hardest fighting fish pound for pound? What planet are you on? Eels don't even fight, they just thrash! I like eels, biggest about 4.5lb in ultra light gear, yeah it's heavy but fight! I smell something
Sam Caddick Passmore your joking right? A big carp, catfish or pike will fight way better then any eel. All eels I caught just squirm around on the line, they don’t pull for shit.
Tyrone CatKiller Kang No, I won’t. But you should learn how to spell and use capital letters, kid. I’m sure your mum wouldn’t be happy if she heard the language you’re using for your age.
inedible? are you vegan or vegetairian? some freshwatrer fish are considered more tasty than saltwater, it depends on your skill in preparation and cooking
David Wilson hi mate. These particular ones are by "Comoran". They are between 2.4m and 3.0m long. But are probably made in the same factory as all other brands that sell telescopic rods between 20-30 euros.
