“Cheap”. His cheap and my cheap are totally different. Now I know the good stuff is gonna cost but it doesn’t mean I can afford it.

Not in the United States. I asked the manager of the college of engineers at my university if I could have one of the old oscilloscopes and he told me their not allow to sell them or give them away. He said that by law they have to dispose of any equipment because they were bought with tax payer's money and it's not fair to just give them away. I know; it didn't make sense to me either.

Don't get me wrong I love Dave's videos, they're great! I was just marveling at the fact that he said it was a "quick one" and yet it was 15 minutes. Its not a complaint just merely an observation that I found humerous. Sorry if I upset anyone!

First of all, you need an electromagnetically quiet room, which usually also means an acoustically and optically 'quiet' room (because all light sources, depending on what frequencies you're after, emit some RF, and sound waves cause abberations in the test equipment). Then you usually use a branching antenna, shielded BNCs to the outside and an RF spectrum analyzer (nothing fancy here) + spectrum calibration source. Make sure your DUT is tested in all orientations.

I had a Siglent SDS1102CM last year. I liked the features it had to offer but I didn't like the way the triggering couldn't handle noisy waveforms. The display would jitter. I returned it and got a Rigol DS1052E instead, no jitter on that one. Siglent customer support were very easy to deal with though.

Tabor is cheaper than Agilent. You are not comparing Apples with Apples. Also Agilent's top range 4.6GS/s AWG is a rebadged Tabor.

Hi Demonbreed131, it depends on what you are working on. Rule #1> you probably don't need more than 100MHz bandwidth! If your working with SMD/SMT digital stuff then you would need over 100MHz and a Logic Analyzer to boot! So for the price, it's a good investment to buy the Siglents or name brands etc. Um, if your doing light digital and peering just to see how a circuit is behaving, a 40-70MHz is fine w/out the screen length. Check into Owon 5022 for cheap!.. But the Siglents are better.

do you mean they use a piece for a long time before throwing it away, or they stockpile equipment, and throw it away all at once? because if it's the former, i wouldn't have to wait a long time, i'd just be getting old equipment.

I wish semi-good oscilloscopes were cheaper. I own a Agilent U2702A (2 channel 200MHz USB Scope), and I'd sometimes like a a nice standalone 4ch scope, with possibly basic protocol analyzing. Digital inputs wouldn't hurt either (eg. when trying to debug something with 8+3 parallel lines). But currently anything above couple of hundreds is too much for me

I just bought a SDS1102CML thanks to this video, good oscilloscope rugged build. Am amazed that the power supply is not isolated... if I tie the gnd aligator clip to the usb 5v it's dead short. Found out the Earth cable is tied to the gnd of the USB and the ground of the aligator clip and this is normal.
@DuanvantSlot
@DuanvantSlot 9 лет назад
Vale Sarbu Yes. Your computer is the same. You can research why yourself, but it has to do with noise.
@valiza123
@valiza123 9 лет назад
Duan Coetsee I did not ask a question, pointed out a fact. Of course my computer is the same... where do you think I tested. It's related to safety and is also bad for noise. You usually isolate the case from the ground for better noise rejection. Also in the same time it is dangerous if you use an unearthed plug. Try touching the computer and a earthed object (water pipe) and see if you feel it.
@DuanvantSlot
@DuanvantSlot 9 лет назад
Vale Sarbu Obviously there's a misunderstanding. Why are you amazed that the power supply isn't isolated, if you know why it should be? In fact, it's a legal requirement in most countries that the oscilloscope is earthed...forgive me for stating the obvious, it's just that there are many idiots who use oscilloscopes without understanding. My antistatic strap is tied to earth through a resistor, so what is it exactly you want me to feel?
@cdreid99999
@cdreid99999 9 лет назад
+Duan van't Slot you seem rather.. dim. Youve managed to slog your way through one very basic technology and now... lecture people on "being idiots using oscilloscopes"??? You realise there are people with doctorates in MULTIPLE fields who use oscilloscopes in their work in ways you cant imagine.. who dont know ohms law..and dont care? I didnt think so
@valiza123
@valiza123 9 лет назад
+Duan van't Slot The misunderstanding is still on your side, I said I found the earthed oscilloscope something normal after research but it's more for safety than noise. IN PC's, the dead short between gnd and earth I found weird; even colleagues from IT said it was wrong until they tested it out. Nobody believed me the Earth and GND of usb's is a dead short!

What kind of equipment would be needed to check for RF emmisions from electronic devices? I want to see the intensity of the RF and the frequency of the RF. The frequency coverage would be from a 1kHz to 10Ghz. I assume this would be a spectrum analyzer of some sort. What type of attennas would be used to cover that range of frequencies.

Yah... that stuff is cheap... if you earn in dollars/euro. Here in Poland the average sallary is something around $1200 and people generally don;t earn that much usually. When you add import, taxes etc you get that I would probably have to not spend a dyme for 2.5months in order to get myself a low range Agilent Infinivision scope :)

Hi We have a DS1102E by Rigol The main weaknesses for us is: The lack of digital functionality and channels The resolution of the screen The PC control software is poor The slowish waveform update We are still learning, but eventually it we are looking to spend £1500 +/- 500 on an Agilent 1. Are the Siglent better than Rigol price for price? It would be used for low power PSU/ADC/DAC/Parallel and Serial up to 125Mhz would you still strongly recommend the Agilent?

You mean second hand? In that case it's really not true - here in Holland (marktplaats.nl) you can get decent analog scopes for way under 100 euros. I got my three hameg 40MHz DSOs (HM408) for free, and they usually sell for about 50 euros tops. With second hand stuff, the keyword is patience. Sometimes you're in a dry spell and nothing interesting is sold for a couple of weeks. Then the marketplace is flooded with cheap and free scopes.

@warywolfen
@warywolfen 9 лет назад
Mohammed Sahid They are essential for troubleshooting electronic equipment. You "signal trace" through the circuits until you locate the stage that's screwing up. Then you use your meter, component testers, etc, and knowledge of circuit theory, to find the bad part.
