Great review Dave! Two thumbs up....unfortunately only one counts :^)

I'll take the dust over corrosion any day of the week. :-) That device was probably sitting on a shelf for 20+ years, which would explain all the dust. The only bad thing is the dust acts like an insulator not allowing the components to cool properly.

One of the nicest LCR meters I've ever seen is an ESI Videobridge. It has a monochrome CRT display and has functions you don't seen even on more modern units. It will do all the basic things a regular LCR meter will do, plus perform ESR testing, data logging, and analysis of circuit impedance along three thousand frequency points between 20Hz and 20kHz. It can even be configured for parallel measurement.

So if you hook this up to some computer you could read out all or most of the measurements and calculators at once and program that to show and alert values that are out of bounds? Would be interesting to see how one would implement such a unit for small production run use.

Dave, why don't you have a compressor out in the bunker (with ear protection & Safety glasses) unless the motor noise is an issue with neighbours ? P.S. the case of that unit must have been removed for several years, or it's been stored in a camels eyelid for twenty years.

sorry to hear eevblog is down due to the fires in the server...I've come across a lot of helpful folks there. wow below $200, have you seen the prices now? Option 001 is mainly the transformer measurement...etc. under measurement mode you would see 8 pages instead of 6 pgs when you have option 001.. Just got mine, about $300. When I leave it trigger internal which is the same as auto numbers jump around too much and all measurement are less than what is marked on the caps. wondering why it's like that. I will take any input please. thanks

EEV blog: What LCR meter, bench or handheld? The Agilent you have is about $400, used classic bench models under $200 on up. No-name brand $80....Thoughts. I have a bunch of great older HP test gear, but those SPECIAL components scare me. If they go you are going to have a hard time finding a replacement.

instead of airdust spray you could buy a cheap airbrush compressor. they quite and don't push to much air out.
@PlasmaHH
@PlasmaHH 9 лет назад
No air cans? Time to build an air compressor with storage tank and all kinds of electronics gadgets ;) (Or be boring and buy a big soft conductive brush)... Did you have a look at what voltages the dc/dc provides and what they are used for? For me it looks like something introduced late in the design phase... "oh we have the base board ready but someone we can't get around needing another voltage for this one special asic on that other board" "ok, just whack in a dc/dc, dont want to respin the base board with the power supply section"

Wouldn't a phase angle with a magnitude of >90 suggest a negative resistance..?
@dhrosa14
@dhrosa14 9 лет назад
flemish4 Yes. That can happen if you plug in a powered device, like a battery. If you hook up a 1.5V battery with an ESR of 1 ohm to the meter, and the meter tests with a voltage of 1.4V, it will measure -100mA flowing into the device, and hence a resistance of -14 ohms.
@flemish4

hey! one thing i have always wondered about is how PC power supply's can sense if they are feed 110 or 220. back in the day, and still on cheaper units..... you have the red swtich. but my corsair hx 850 is able to switch on the fly from 110 to 220. or 120 to 240, and 50 or 60 hertz. its able to run on like 100 to 270 volts and 40 to 70 hertz or something like that.... yet still deliver 850w. HOW! mainly.... how does it sense, and how does it switch for voltag.e

***** The mains frequency isn't really important, because the supply has a rectifier in it and runs on DC. The compensation for the difference in input voltage is done by changing the duty cycle and/or the frequency of the switching converter. That's it on a very basic level anyway.
@slademcthornbody9060
@slademcthornbody9060 9 лет назад
***** The power supply rectifies the mains and then feeds it through a switching transformer which is switched at duty cycle which is servo'd to maintain stable output rails at the required 3.3, 5, 12v etc regardless of load. The servo controller does what ever is needed to maintain the required output voltage. Because 100-270 is much higher than the output, it really doesn't care what voltage or frequency is on the input within reason (and component ratings). If the input voltage is lower, it will increase the switching duty cycle to compensate and therefore draw more current. Some supplies will also have a PFC circuit to draw a sinusoidal input current, but that is another story...
@mrlazda
@mrlazda 9 лет назад
***** New power supplies don't switch between input voltages, they are universal input voltage 85 - 264 Vac input range (100 - 240 Vac nominal). Old ones that had switch for 110V used voltage doubler circuit (diodes and capacitors on 110V position worked as voltage doubler and on 220V as full wave rectifier), basically old ones was designed to work width 220V AC input, and universal ones are designed to work with 100V input (this is not totally correct, but it can be looked that way) and only difference is in turns ratio on transformer (both keep output voltage stability by adjusting duty cycle).

Get a vacuum cleaner that has an exhaust port to attach a hose to with a blower nozzle on the other end and the regular vac hose you can hold nearby to suck up the dust, saves buying that blowjob-in-a-can stuff all the time... :P
