Dave answers a beginner forum question on why the Rigol DS1054Z oscilloscope does not show the intended vertical Volts/Div setting he expects.
A trap for young and old players alike.
1X and 10X probes, and auto probe interfaces.

To make it easier to notice that the switch on the probe is one way or the other simply use a marker and place a dot on one side of that recess where switch is. That way if the switch is moved one way it will cover up that dot, while when it is the other way that dot will be visible.

On the MDO3000, the compensation data is unique per channel and probe combination. If you move a probe from channel 1 over to channel 2 for the first time it's not going to be compensated. You need to perform the autocompensation once for every channel/probe combination.

That bugger caught me out when I bought my DS1054Z because, it defaults to 10x which is weird, but even after setting it to 1x, it always changed back to 10x and caught me out again, because again, by default, the scope is set to restore factory defaults every time you power on the scope, so you probably want to change that option as well
@EEVblog
@EEVblog 8 лет назад
arcadeuk Are you sure it defaults back to 10X every time it boots? That sounds wrong.

I can confirm after testing, that it does default to 10x, if you have the scope set to reset settings on power on

I am trying to see an intermittent signal (such as me touching and untouching a test point) and can't figure out how to do it. I want the scope to show 0v as a line across the screen, but when i very briefly tap the oscope probe to 12v, it shows the jump and then goes back to showing the 0v line when not touching. I want to see a jump that remains after my brief touch is not touching anymore. So like if I touch 12v 5 times in 10 seconds, i will see the 0v line interrupted by 5 brief 12v spikes. But I have tried for what seems like an eternity of trigger options, run/stop,auto set, normal set (auto set turned off), sec/div, and I don't remember what else. No luck. I can get it set so the line jumps to 12v, but as soon as I disconnect it, the line goes back to 0v. No history. Can someone explain to me how to do this. I have a 2 channel DOS (Hantek DSO5072P).
@ppdan
@ppdan 8 лет назад
Setting a probe to x10 means that you have to multiply by 10 the readout because the probe attenuates the measured signal by 20dB before feeding it to the scope.
@EEVblog
@EEVblog 8 лет назад
ppdan Not unless you set the software to 10X in which case you don't have to do the math it does it for you.
@ppdan
@ppdan 8 лет назад
I always wondered why "cheap" scopes without the "auto sense" don't permanently display the multiplier on screen. For example on the Rigol DS1054Z there is enough room in the bottom bar to show the "x10" or whatever setting next to the "V/div". Even experienced users can sometimes be fooled by this, although it'll probably only last a few seconds (has happened to me : "why is that reading so high ... aw yes, nevermind")

Hating the switch on the cheaper probes, you have always one probe lying somewhere with the wimpy switch accidentally set to 1X and you wonder why your values are off.

How does that 1GHz probe get power internal battery or some kind of circuitry that takes the power off that 1 connector
@EEVblog
@EEVblog 8 лет назад
Jeremiah Lowe It doesn't need power, it's just a regular "passive" probe. Only "active" probes need power. 1GHz is as high as passive probes 10X divider probes can go.

interesentingly the DS1052E shows "volts/div at limit" when i try to zoom in "too much". this is more describing than the generic message "parameter limited". maybe the software developers favored this generic message cause it easier to implement and thinking "well an engineer knows what this means"

@TheHuesSciTech
@TheHuesSciTech 8 лет назад
masat87 Lol, you should probably watch the video he linked to where he does exactly that...
@Zonkotron
@Zonkotron 8 лет назад
masat87 Probably not. Chances are that the analog signal processing system will aready limit the bandwith in a way that prevents most of the noise from ever reachign the screen. Additionally - the phosphor of the screen is usually of a type that exhibits a considerable afterglow - therefore any fast noise that was not caught by the electronics will be integrated into a slight halo around the trace, but not distinct patterns....it is an optical low pass, if you will, designed to present a more readable trace from a slow or erratically moving beam
@masat87
@masat87 8 лет назад
TheHue's SciTech I watched that (although a while back), but the effect of the long exposure was different from what I imagined for the high speed camera.

Guys, silly question, and I know the answer is probably 'no', but can the multi-function knob on the Rigol 1052e be changed so that turning it clockwise scrolls DOWN the menu options instead of up? I keep turning the knob the wrong way when going up and down in the menus... I'd like to reverse it cos it seems backwards to me. Thanks.

qoaa I think sellers are asking too much for them. I bought 2 Hitachi scopes from eay, expect to pay around $100 for a 60MHZ scope. I have a V-650F. Try to buy one that is shown powered on with a trace showing. Most sellers don't know how to test them so they usually list them as is.

Bri G. thanks! I do have a mentor, he's a retired air force, and has masters in electronic engineering. He's been helping me as I run into questions, problems, confusion. I have a good multimeter, but he says I need an analog scope. That I should start with an analog and so I can see what my build is really doing, and learning about phases, 90/180 out of phase situations. He's a fan of Tektronix and for a beginner he recommended either 2215 or 2225 to save money but his advice is don't go over $100 for those 2 models. He deliberately wants me to stay analog and simple as I'm a novice. I'm a ham operator so I knew the basic equations, but now I'm putting it into practice and also have books home studying theory. Thanks for reply, it does seem many scopes on eBay are overpriced. One listing I laughed, a guy said he got scope free from store that went out of business that was gonna dumpster it. He knew nothing of it, it was a tek 2215, it powered on but no probes, as is starting bid $300. I was like wtf?! :-P
