Another Valiant hits the bench of D-Lab. This one suffered at the hand of a Kobbler. Lucky for this Valiant, it was a factory built unit, or I may have decided the return to stock wasn't worth the time & effort. The radio had problems in every area, RF, Audio, VFO, Power supply, you name it. Most of the problems were introduced by an experimenter. When I run across this, I grab a set of wire cutters, carve out the mess, start over per the print. After 10 hours on the bench, it is working again. I never make any money on these transmitters, since estimations always get blown out of the water with hidden faults. These days, people are realizing the value of these radios and are willing to pay more than in the past. Like all of this vintage equipment, they are slowly disappearing, so are the people willing to work on them.

I used to run my friend's Valiant in the early 1970's on the CB band. I later became a ham and have now owned that Valiant for over 25 years; unfortunately, it was completely non-functional and remained so for all these years. Seeing this video, I dusted it off and started trouble shooting it. I did a re-cap and fired it up and found the audio circuit is dead, but it does 120 watts of RF into a dummy load. I removed a couple of old mods and found the .202 ohm resistor replaced with a piece of wire! Other resistors are out of spec and have been ordered--including the Chernobyl resistor replacement. It will be good to have this old rig up and running again. Thank you D-Lab for the inspiration!

Nice T-shirt, the point-to-point wiring on the Johnsons certainly makes it relatively easy to work on compared to newer rigs. Haven't seen any shots with your four-legged friend a good Labrador is great for keeping tower watered. 73

Well done. I love seeing those old soldiers get a second life. I think I heard that unit breathe a sigh of relief.

Wow! What a dizzying series of corrective issues. I am most impressed with your diagnostic ability with these ham units. Once you removed the overbearing modifications, restored the circuit to stock, and used well disciplined testing to identify any other issues, it was a matter of deduction to sort the remaining problem(s). Well done!

I like the old fluorescent lighting. At least he didn't put screws into the side of a tuned cavity. That could had caused all kinds of havoc to occur.

Thank you sir! Awesome Video! We must remember that tubes have a better chance of surviving than transistor and integrated circuits (especially sub micron scale integration) in 'certain situations'! But yes, a bit heavy to carry in ones backpack. I'm collecting now and referencing your videos! And I'm licensed.

You should paint this unit yellow! :) Those three 4.7K resistors opening up simultaneously has to be the *strangest* failure-mode yet!

Can you make a video on America five radio and show how the filters cans can be replaced? I am working on a Zenith Universal I think 600 a d I pop thr 1LB4 tube and the reaction also made a big flash bit I think it will still work a little longer.i have the filter can out but I'm stumped on what to replace it with when I make my order for a new tube and the caps.

Aloha, Terry. I too live in Hawaii. Does your brother happen to know about audio electronics (esp. gtr amps)? If so, I have some gear I’d love to get looked at. Either way, thanks for another great vid. 🤙

I have what I think is the same radio. The only difference I can tell is the left side analog meter. Would I still go about repairing it the same way as you're showing? Thanks

Sorry to drop this here, I usually watch RU-vid on TV. I can get a deal on an acoustic amp, what would go into converting it to sound more like an electric guitar amp? Is it just a matter of a few resistors and caps? Thank you.
