Today we have a question from Matt who wonders how the Chewster (that's me!) deals with wrestlers in BJJ competitions.
So, he says he goes into competition, faces tough Wrestlers, they take him down, get up two points, and often just stay busy and holds on to the win.
He says that he often opens up to try and counteract the stalling but ends up giving up more points or putting himself in a position to get submitted.
He's wondering if I have any tips to deal with Wrestlers in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
Well, of course I've dealt with Wrestlers in Jiu-Jitsu competitions, and I myself was a Wrestler!
There's plenty of times I go against guys that I know I won't take down and, in this video, I'll dive into an idea that helps me navigate these specific types of situations.
Specifically, we will talk about which "ground" you should be fighting on and how to intelligently approach competition when you are faced with a better Wrestler.
Hopefully you found this answer helpful, and if any of you were struggling with a similar problem then I hope you found this useful to you too!
Thanks for watching!

This question is kind of like asking "How do I beat someone with may more diverse grappling training than me, (someone who is my rank in BJJ and also a strong wrestler)". The tip is spot on but even if you use the good advice, don't expect the wrestler to not have a plan when someone wants to pull guard. Usually BJJ guys who do this tip telegraph they're pulling guard and a wrestler can score off the pull just by touching your leg. If they don't, a good wrestler almost always spends almost ALL of their time rolling in practice passing guard because no one takes them down and they don't get swept. If you think wrestlers are hard, catch wrestling has even developed specifically to attack people who plan on playing guard with a lot of toe holds and creative submissions from top without passing guard. So it's gonna be a hard fight if they're a good well rounded grappler. If they're just a former high school wrestler, state qualifier, low placer in a small state, spend more time working on take downs instead of folding and giving up and saying you're not able to take down a wrestler. That mentality is why everyone says BJJ guys suck at takedowns. I was an all American wrestler and most my BJJ friends probably beat themselves mentally about takedowns.

You have to have really good sweeps to beat solid wrestlers. They have amazing bases and you won't catch a sub unless you can upset that. Wrestlers will still shut down most of your sweeps, but it takes them out of position enough to start opening up cracks in their base. Stay tight and be persistent.

One of my favorite sweeps to do against wrestlers is the pendulum sweep. Their wide base makes it easy to swivel under them.

Great advice! Figure out your strength and make the other person fight on your terms. I always tell my new people in class who are just starting BJJ that its all about control. Control your body so you better control the opponents body in order to control the overall situation/fight.

In my first month of Jiu Jitsu I was up against this wrestler (bigger and stronger than me) who as I went to try to take him down he basically pulled me on top of him and put his feet on my hips to launch me like 5ft in the air and I flipped and landed on my back. That's when I learned about guard pulling and haven't gone back even though I suck at playing guard.

Yes wrestlers have a hard time with guard, half guard, del a riva etc.

It's not being a "wrestler." It's mat time. A high school wrestler had intense, 3 hour practices six days a week for four years. A college wrestler has had intense, 3 hour a day practices for eight years. A college wrestler walks into a BJJ gym day 1 with as many mat hours as an average black belt. Average BJJ bro trains an hour and a half a day 3-4 times a week. You want to beat a wrestler, make up the thousands of hours of discrepancy you have in mat time, which usually isn't feasible for adults with full-time employment.

I always try to establish butterfly or closed guard and work on either a pendulum sweep, a shoulder crunch sweep, or a kimura sweep.

I coach BJJ at a large wrestling club. I’ve found a solid half guard is key to beating wrestlers.

Best way to deal with wrestlers is to learn wrestling 😂 Not saying you have to be at their level as you may never will be given their head start and experience. But learning some basics of wrestling can elevate your game significantly.

I'm probably a maniac, because my response to this problem was: learn how to wrestle. As I didn't wrestle growing up (not even judo), I didn't have any kind of standing grappling. It's taken me years to get where I am with my standing game, and quite frankly, that's because it's hard to learn with Jiu-Jitsu guys; we suck at it. It's never stopped me from striving to become better. I'm fortunate that the past few years I've had training partners and coaches that were well versed in wrestling, and I've taken every opportunity to pick their brains. Needless to say, if leg locks are an option, guess what I'm doing? 😉

There are so many people who pull guard because they suck on takedowns, it is also a good strategy to just make them feel uncomfortable on their feet until they pull guard. If you see it coming and have a bit of practice, the moment they pull guard can be a brilliant opportunity to pass their guard while you shut down their attempt.

is there a technical reason why judo, sambo, and wrestling doesn’t have many “absolute” division or “open weight” divisions? It seems pretty common in bjj tournaments. From local to regional to adcc. But in other grappling arts or even mma, you don’t see that often.

If I fail at a take down attempt on a wrestler I usually sit out and go for a del a riva and work from there. My wrestling is pretty good though.

Im sorry, but i would never pull guards or do the butt scoot. You might as well just get on your knees at that point. By far the worst thing to ever happen with bjj.

This mindset I approve of. Realistically, I would attack the wrestler who is better than I as if I believe I am better, then use his counters to counter his. Like Gordon does right into a single leg x by looking like he’s going in for the wrestle control, but pulls you into his single leg x.

# 1 Tip: Be a wrestler! jk jk

Forget trying to sweep a solid wrestler. You may get the sweep, but it’ll take everything out of you. Their base is rock solid. Instead, work on perfecting your escapes. Most wrestlers just want to get side control and wait for clock to run out. Work on your side control and half guard escapes and attacks.

As a former wrestler, (bjj black belt today) I see sweeps and bite my tongue when I think to myself "That will never work against anyone who knows what they're doing". Honestly the best tip is to train with your best wrestler in the room who has a good attitude about helping everyone improve and you'll pick up a few tricks the hard way eventually.
