Effin pedal strikes! - Even with a crash, Lawler is some of Oakridge, OR finest riding.

Hey Guys, welcome back to another Oregon ride. Last week we saw the epic descent off Alpine trail, today, we're going just a short distance for shuttle number 2 of the day to hit another great trail called Lawler.
Lawler is in many ways, the best things about Alpine compressed into a shorter, more technical trail. After you clear the first half a mile of climbing you'll be greeted with a first descent, and after another short punchy climb you'll have almost 3 miles of descending with 1300 ft vert. This trail wastes no time in getting fun.
I was thankfully unhurt beyond some scrapes and bruises, but that's without a doubt the fastest crash I've had in the last few years. So, how did it happen? Well, if you listen to this next section you can hear me clicking through most of my gears. I didn't manage to pedal enough to get it jump into the gear I wanted to, so at this point I didn't notice the rock on the trail and decided to pedal once more to get it in the right gear and bam, massive pedal strike with all my weight pushing the pedal down. It really seemed like hitting a wall, I went from in control to flying instantly. It also seems as if I landed right into the GoPro on my chinbar, there's no way to know for sure, but it seems as if the chinbar saved my teeth on this one.
The worst part about crashes like this is that they mess with my confidence. Its not like I was doing anything stupid or being careless, it was a simple mistake in a section of trail where I didn't see a rock because of a change of lighting, and somehow, that makes it worse, if I'm doing something stupid I know what to change, but when I feel I was within my limits and still crashed it messes with my head. In my experience, the best was to deal with this is to completely ignore it and try to ride as if nothing happened, which is what I tried to do for the rest of this ride.
This climb marks the midpoint for the trail, its not very long, but its super steep, including on short little section that I'd bet 99% of people walk.
After the view point and a short traverse on the ridge, the trail reaps more rewards, with another continous 1500ft of descending in 2.5 miles, there's quite a few fast sections coming up, but what really defines this part of the trail is super tight technical switchbacks after long high speed straights.
At this point it becomes pretty obvious you're loosing elevation fast, its super steep, full of switchbacks and you're already deep into the forest as the vegetation changes into more lush shrubbery. That can only be the indicator of one unfortunate reality, we're getting to the end of the trail. I absolutely loved Lawler, specially cause I did eventually manage to get out of my own head and flow better through everything. This trail will throw so many things at you without being an insanely challenging trail that its a perfect playground for most skill levels from intermediate up, there's different things to enjoy about it and there's no mandatory features anywhere. This, is a superbly well built trail.

Pedal strikes are tough. I feel like I'm pretty aware of my pedals and avoid them for the most part, but it still happens. My 2 worst crashes were from pedal strikes. One was just flesh wounds and bruises, but the other is where I broke my wrist in Moab.
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 5 лет назад
Yikes! Moab is terrible in that sense. Any fall is so likely to cause injury.

Great video! I totally understand losing your head on a crash, it will fade and you'll be confident again. Also, it may not matter to some people but I appreciate you taking out the cussing. I like the chin mount setup.

My road trip kickoff is the only time ever I haven't censored swearing and a few people mentioned it, so I went back to removing it. I like everyone to be able to enjoy the story. In reality I shouldn't cuss at all, but...

Nice video! Crazy how a crash messes with your head. Usually takes a few rides to get the confidence back.

Awesome trails, glad you were ok after that crash, i know exactly what you mean when you say it's worse for your confidence when you thought you were in control, thats how i felt on my crash, ignoring it is the best way but not easy, i still think about my crash 8 weeks later haha, great vid mate :)

Its always hard to completely forget about it, but eventually it fades. For me, it was in the back of my head most of the rest of the trip. At this point I kinda forgot, but it took a few weeks for sure. Thanks, Marc!

I think the Oregon Chamber of Commerce needs to use this footage....great stuff Stefano! (Can't imagine you're gonna want that full face in gator land, but it was awfully buttery!) Cheers!

I'd be honored if any state wanted to use my video to represent their awesome destinations. I can weather the full face in FL all year except in summer, although I don't ride with it much. I have a MET parachute when I want to wear a full face which is much lighter and breathes better.

Glad the crank arm and your foot survived that strike!! Good to see you wear the proper gear. Great video and challenging trail as always.. I installed a few upgrades on my Spectral, Fizik M-1 seat so I save 122 grams there VS stock, its VERY comfortable as I have 1 on my Focus hardtail and I have a pair of 2019 Mavic XA carbon wheels with the NEW and faster engagement hub coming, got them for $1100.00 shipped so in my opinion a great deal, save about 250 grams there as well, going to run Vittoria Mezcal G-1 2.6 tires, my type of riding I really don't think I need the DHF
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 5 лет назад
Always dress for the crash, not the ride. Tires are an incredibly personal thing, if you like the Mezcal's go for it, you're definitely building a super light rig! Those are in fact awesome deals.

Stefano, eh? Awesome name. Italian. And such. But really this was awesome. I don't want to see you fall, but I appreciated it in a learning kind of way. Don't pedal unless you're upright or can easily see the ground well. Also I need pads or something. And a chin bar. In regards to the two camera setup. The audio threw me off more than any thing. I love the chin cam, but if I had to guess your preference it would be the gimbal. If I had a camera attached to my chin I know I'd be off my game, so if you think that contributed at all to your crash I would say go with whatever leaves your head the clearest.
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 5 лет назад
Haha yeah, italian roots. I've gotten so very used to knee pads, I don't wear elbow pads, but knee to me is now mandatory. The bell super dh is great because I can travel with only one helmet and switch back and forth between full face and half shell as needed. Thanks for the feedback on the camera setup.

Is any of it considered black diamond? I dont know anything about down hill trails being in florida. Like is it mostly just turns you got to watch out for? I didnt see any jumps or obstacles i dont think...correct me if im wrong. Great vid again

Lawler is rated as a blue trail all throughout, but you always have to consider that ratings change by location. A blue trail in FL is different than one in OR. For example, Gun range in Markham to me is by now completely doable without much effort, but double diamonds in Whistler are full of stuff I don't think I'll ever be able to do.

Hey what's up man! I am thinking about buying the new YT capra 2020 and I wanna know how the bike climbs. I am looking for better climber 29er Enduro and that's my favorite. Have you been able to ride it? Are you happy with how it feels? PD: I am Guillermo Lecuona's (from Caracas) Enduro riding mate ; )
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 4 года назад
Hey man, thanks for reaching out! Guilermo said you had seen the video, stoked on that. I haven't been able to ride the new Capra, only the old version, and they've changed a lot. The old capra was what I'd think of as a traditional enduro bike, the new one seems to be a big hit bike, they pushed it even further so that it handles some bike park well. The Jeffsy and the capra both got more aggressive, you could even say the jeffsy is now more of a mini enduro than just trail and the capra is more of a mini dh bike that you can still pedal. Theoretically, looking at these graphs (linkagedesign.blogspot.com/2018/02/ytalent-capra-275-2018.html) it seems like its a bike that would pedal ok, could climb better, could climb worse, but would absolutely destroy the downs. Up to you if that what you want in a bike or something a bit lighter like the Jeffsy could be an option. If you haven't seen it, I like the way this guy reviewed the new gen Capra. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qABKC2hHG0c.html and this guy who didn't like the capra so much, so you get the opinion of both people who are for and against it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jPkwXTYeNVs.html If you wanna dig deeper into it, send me an email and we'll chat

great trail indeed, the pedal strikes are the worst both in slow or fast speeds. The camera seems to work just fine but sometimes is to "chunky" when you turning your head (meant goes allover) , but still manageable, just follow your instincts and mostly what is safer for you, thanks V!
@BlindstuffMTB
@BlindstuffMTB 5 лет назад
I think the conclusion is both cameras do ok, but its not worth using them both at the same time just to get the different viewpoints.

It took a bit to stop thinking about it, but I think I got it. What aspects would you like to see that are more vlog style? I've thought about it a few times, but not exactly sure what pre/post ride stuff people are interested in.

I had a YT, and the BB was just too low for the bike to actually be ridable. Especially in places like AZ. Oregon is actually very low BB friendly, but the fad bike the bike industry is chasing now is that apparently nobody pedals bikes anymore.
