Absolutely great review, however there's one thing you got wrong. eFootball actually uses the same animation tech FIFA using, called motion matching. EA only rebranded it to Hypermotion for the sake of a better and flashier name. That's why all the animations (or, to better describe it, the transition between animations) are more fluid than in PES. I think the reason behind players doesn't correctly intercept the ball is that there is a layer of the system which decides what to do with certain ball heights, directions, etc. and drives the animation engine based on many different parameters - that's the part what's actually lacking. The tech behind the animation system is basically that the machine learning engine sets up a large database which contains matching animation parts (this is were the name motion matching comes from) based on the animated bone movement values and a lot of other parameters you have like speed, direction jumping, any football related params like ball position, etc., but there's another part which should drive the player which is translated into said motion data. If that part doesn't handle these perfectly, the player won't transition into those partial animations. It's easy to see that it's a bug because sometimes it does transition and the player is aware of the ball correctly, sometimes it completely fails to even recognise anything around them.
I just stopped playing footy games and turned to playing the huge backlog I've accumulated on my Steam Library. It's a lot easier when you have a Steam Deck :) I greatly miss FUMA and PES, but after 800 hours I think I'll give it a rest for a while. Might give the newest version of eFootball a try.

I can't lie, when I played version 1.0, my first impression was: this is the most realistic football experience I have EVER played. In terms of physics, in terms of player feel, and in terms of animations. The only thing that is missing now is master league, I really get bored of playing online after 100+ hours, in general, it just needs a lot of the content that has been continuously been cut out release after release, now it just seems like a tiny shadow of what PES used to be, but I hope this amount of content isn't the only thing we get for the following years, it's still a fantastic start though.
Very nice review! There are 2 things that I want to add about graphics. The first is ball shadow, it will always looks the same (position and opacity) even when it's up above the ground. And the second one, on cutscene (goal celebration) player height will always looks the same/similar. It looks a bit weird if you see Haaland and Messi celebrate the goal together. FYI, The second one also occurred on PES, so they might just reuse the same animation logic. Hopefully, Konami will find your video useful for their future improvement.
Good point about the ball shadows. I forgot to critique the celebrations but only because they're already too painful to watch and leagues behind those in FIFA so I just forgot them, but yeah.
Great review! Hopefully Konami will bring offline modes and edit mode soon. I am tired of cheaters. I don’t feel like playing online mode for the reason. Until then, going back to ML on 2021.

I always say this Manual should be the norm in ranked. I've watched Assisted passing on High level football games and it all looks identical in terms of play style. Manual passing and shooting is easily the best skill gap to determine good players to great. It adds all the options and the meta is deeper.
The best reviewer to ever review the franchise, no matter how lengthy your videos are it is always an absolute joy to watch. Wish they had guys like you at Konami, guys who knows the delicacies of the beautiful game.
So apparently I've been told Japanese youtubers with direct contact to developers have been given instructions on how the cheat can be FIXED by Konami, but the youtubers said they're not allowed to speak of these issues and deleted the comments. This taboo culture won't help. It seems that Konami would rather bury its head in the sand than deal with this fixable issue.
It also looks like the 3-0 hack no longer works after the last weekend update, but the void hack still works. The 3-0 hack also leads to a void, so it "works" to void the win, but won't give the cheater a win. Still very bad.
I think a lot of the players who like to criticize the game just haven't put the time and effort to learn the new gameplay mechanics, so they might be frustrated that they can't play well and the easy thing is to blame the game. Particularly before 1.0, I could tell when I played against someone who was trying to defend like in PES (which was even less possible back then), so I put a few goals past them, which resulted in quite a few rage quits.
This game is full of shit everywhere. Leran gameplay mechanics? Really? Tabk mechanics maybe because tanks move better than konami shitty players. Or player awareness where players almost all the time are blind and run in unknown directions.

After I played a lot eFootball adapting în....I played Pes 21 ...After 1 match I deleted it ....Conclusion ? eFootball îs BETTER,much better at some points !!!!They just need to bring back all the modes and the weather conditions

As always, incredible review. I think you've inspired me to try full manual -- I am tired of passes that go straight to the opposition team and I am willing to up the difficulty to avoid that. The ability to pass into an empty space is huge -- the way it is now, every through pass tends to end up in the opposition, unless it is lofted. Let's see how frustrating manual passing will be :) . Player switching is indeed horrible -- it makes defending almost impossible in certain situations.

Fantastic Video! What keeps me from even trying to make the switch is the lack of proper offline modes and teams. This and, as you mentioned, edited and modded PES on PC. I just couldn't bear the unlicensed kits and the abysmal vanilla stadium atmosphere, let alone the lack of stadiums.

Love the review, the game in 1.0 to 1.1 was wonderful but it's current state is still horrible in my opinion. I'm explaining, Online : I'm just not playing it anymore, I have an incredible team, I've built in a couple months, and grinding is not even worth it, especially with this much cheaters and lack of content. Gameplay is even worse, in the last updates, there's been some shadow changes that I can't explain. I was actually enjoying it but litterally not even an hour after the maintenance of 1.1.2, the game became unplayable, I still don't know why. I didn't get any 5 star connection with an opponent, even if the matchmaking is stuck in my area and the fact that I have a pretty good internet. The reponsiveness is really bad, sometimes it can take 1 or 2 seconds for my player to execute a pass or a shot, which ruins it to me and if by miracle you stay in the game with the lack of responsiveness, your opponent will pretty much take the game for a win anyways, as he's going to void it. Solo : There isn't any content at all, but it's already a lot better. Responsiveness is still buggy even if it's singleplayer, and pretty much every single game, I know if i'm winning or losing after the 20 first minutes. Sometimes the AI can't move, even on the highest difficulty, my players are super-heroes. But sometimes, my "shiny" Ney & Messi just transform into Adama Traoré & Dembélé, They don't take any runs, they can't shoot, every single player is marked to the highest perfection, and the pressing by the AI is incredibly overpowered. It's one way or another, tried both manual & assisted, pretty much nothing changed, I just play better in manual, but it doesn't make any difference. I don't know if it is just a personal experience or if it's pretty common, but I just can't play it, I have 437 hours on the game, I try but I just can't. I don't know why the game was reduced to this, the gameplay was already really good in PES 2021, small tweakings such as refereeing and dribbling and slightly better graphics, would have been the cherry on the cake. Konami has found what they seeked for, (money) in eFootball, and we could have had what we wanted, pretty much the same game as last year, with some improvements, and it was a win-win situation. Hope I'm not alone in thinking this.
I tried to play FUMA in DT, after some months doing it in PES 21 because of your vídeos, i even got to 5 division before 0.9 i think and im not good, i don't even play in Legend mode in PES. But i found just too frustranting, it was killing my joy, so i quit, and started to play in assisted mode. Sorry disapointing you haha
Very nice video. I think it's important to distinguish between player selection and player switching. All issues that you describe are player selection issues not switching. Player selection: Which player will be auto-selected after a pass. Player switching: Which player will you switch to when you press the player switch button. Because Konami thinks our issue is player switching (as seen in the survey), but what we actually want is better player selection.
Thanks Thomas. Sometimes the game will provide the right selection of players to switch the cursor to, but the player it chooses to switch the cursor to first is the wrong one. Hopefully, Konami sees the video and understand what exactly the problem is.

What's your opinion on the later versions of eFootball? I feel like ever since v1.1.0 the game has been getting worse and less responsive with each patch. Especially the dribbling, taking too many extra touches when receiving the ball and the connection quality. It also seems like inertia and match up gave been nerfed too much compared to v1.0 and it's made the game worse imo.
A lot of the footage here is from the latest 1.1.4. Nothing major has changed IMO. Stunning shots have been nerfed, inertia is a little more balanced maybe. My big complaints i.e. keeper exits and player switching, are still the same.

So there is a hope for a game, and since PES21 online shuts down this month, maybe more and more people will try eFootball after disaster start. I'm new to eFootball (Less than month, played PES21 with friends offline for several weeks before) and I like it, ofc there is some downsides, but overall, I'm enjoying it. Hope the game wont die out
Play FIFA 22 for its content and arcade style. Play PES 2021 for its realism sensastion gameplay. Play EF just for..... Check what changes with each new update. And you describe it nicely. Good job.

Amazing review! i personally still can't get over the ugly puke colored pitch and that horrible player switching, like i thought player switching in PES 17 was frustrating but this is just embarrassing. Other than that i love your passion for this game even though Konami keeps kicking us in the balls over and over, this game is a disaster and i'm dumbfounded to see some things that i hated and were removed in the recent PES games to be back again... I hope things get better in the future if they ever decide to make a new game.
It will keep getting better. I completely wrote off eFootball after playing 0.9, but seeing what they pulled off over the break, I have hope now. I just wish they'd hire visual artists to help with the grass and lighting. The only two graphics they need to get right in a football game.

I like this video, but I still can't play one Efootball match either. It feels "bad" for me after pes. I'll wait until we can mod this game, and I'll give one more chance to it.
For the pass and cursor change it's true. Im the player like to use more passing or tactical approach rather than dribbling, it's very annoying and frustrating plus keep losing bcs of this issue😭
I feel like you dont know what motion matching is. There is no button for motion matching. Motion matching is the way animations blend in each other better than normally. That always happens, not when you press a button. What you're referring to is match up

Good review. One thing I don't really agree on but can respect it's merits is going FUMA. It makes it unnecessarily too sloppy, sure some moves can be executed brilliantly, but too many times even the simplest of passes or goal chances go astray. Reason why I'm not in agreement is that in real life football, for anybody that has played at a decent level, passing is one of the most simplest of skills that can be executed without much thought. For this reason I still prefer to play next level up from full manual
I've played semi pro for the African Club of the Century before college, then played for my medical school football team. But let me tell you something, FUMA is more realistic for the exact same reason you mentioned. A novice beginner FUMA player will be like a real player who just started passing the ball. As you get more experienced, normal easy passes become easy as in real life. Harder passes become harder just like in real life. With assists, beginner and expert users pretty much pass the exact same way regardless of how easy or difficult a pass is.
Commenting after 4 months of this video was posted. I have never played eFootball cause at launch it was a meme so I’d just stick to modded PES, I rewatch this vid again and I guess I’ll try for the off the ball movements the AI made since it really is frustrating seeing my teammates just keep coming close and ask for the ball quite often rather than running into space behind the opposition. But, I mostly played the player career mode in PES so, let’s see how it goes.
Many players arent aware that their connection isnt good for PES konami should add "ping counter during match" so players can know if they have connection problem or not this will help alot
Currently trying to finish Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order on my Steam Deck. Hopefully starting Red Dead Redemption 2 soon. But the most I play now is EFootball.
Been playing all my non-football games on the Deck. I recently bought a new controller, gonna reinstall eFootball and if I like it enough I'll make a 2025 review.
Zero new modes, more responsive, fixed keeper exits, a little better shooting physics, no changes graphically. Daytime still restricted to offline trial mode exhibitions.
U need to update a new video. The game now is very smooth passes even on assit goes where you want .everything is better snd good to play but shooting is stil not as good
The dropping ball kick actually exists in eFootball. I just did it using Scholes yesterday. It seems to be quite rare and require a very specific body position.
Well it shouldn't be. This isn't an advanced shot type. Also I've been trying with very highly rated players and it's not happening. Maybe Konami fixed it?
