“The Magician” Efren Reyes faces CJ Wiley at the 19th US Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake Virginia in September of 1994.
This was a matchup between two legends of the game.
While Reyes had yet to win a US Open 9-Ball Championship at the time of this match, he was already known as one of the best players in the sport.
Wiley was also a great player in his own right, and had just defeated Rodney Morris in his prior match.
This was a winners side match, race to 13, winner breaks.
Billy Incardona and special guest Johnny Archer provide the commentary.

The sulking at the end by CJ was uncalled for. It's really not too difficult to be a gracious loser and to have the common decency to shake a referees hand that's been totally fair

CJ explained recently that he had been flustered/annoyed before starting because they changed the match time from 9pm to 7pm without telling him. He only found out minutes before the match and didn't prepare as he was used to. The organizers had told Efren, but not CJ. CJ said he couldn't shake it during the match and let it get to him.

No, it is not. Think about why the pros (and myself) carry 4, 5 or more ends and shafts in their cases. Sometimes one just isn't feeling right, tips off, weight feels different, etc. Switching cues also changes the dynamics in a match if you're losing or just not feeling right...keep pocketing !!

To say changing the shaft mid macth is illegal to try to win is ridiculous. Equipment malfunctions. Imagine people automatically losing if their tip broke on thier cue. It would be outrageous. Efren won this match because of just a few missed balls on CJ' part and I dont care what anybody says, thats what makes a champion. The ability to consistency capitize on your opponents errors. He rolled out after the break. His strategy there was to get into a position where he could execute a jump shot with a good degree of confidence if Efren gave it back to him, which I believe he did. Rolling out after the break is one of the things in 9-ball that requires knowledge and an understanding of your own abilities. Choosing the right roll-out is not easy to do and is very underrated.

Efren “Bata” Reyes If you ask anyone who is the greatest pool player in the world, Efren Reyes is the most well-known and top-ranked player. He is also considered the best pool player in the world. He has won over 100 professional tournaments and has earned over 80 international titles, earning him the nickname “The Magician.” What makes Efren so amazing is that he was the first player to win the World Championship in two different categories. He also is a 4-time winner in the WPA 9-ball championship and the World 8-ball championship. Taking your cue apart is an old dirty trick to play with your opponents mind to make him miss his shot. It's one of the many "sharking" moves. If you want to change a shaft or something you should do it during your turn or between games. You can also let your opponent or ref know that you are going to do this to be safe.

@@nickp4793 Sure you can change shafts or do whatever you want when it's your turn. I have never seen a pro do that shark move, ever. He absolutely knew what he was doing because he was about to lose the match, and it worked.

@@sdickinson5234 I understand what you are saying, believe me, and I know that is 100% the culture in the States. Where Efren is from they simply don't care about little stuff like that, and no one there would have even blinked if Efren did the same. I don't think he meant it as a shark at all. IMO:)

Everybody talks about Efren Reyes, and then CJ Wiley talks like he is a monster player.......NEITHER COULD HANDLE ANY OF THE TOP PROS TODAY.........they would need weight........period.

Efren handled a lot of the top pros at last years derby. By making this statement, you have shown your total lack of pool knowledge.

I agree with you, but Efren kind of did take the game to a different level and made everyone better. If not for an Efren Reyes today's players wouldn't be as skilled as they are. But these guys can do everything Efren could, plus they figured out the break and can jump with ease and accuracy.

Awesome match, could you guys kindly upload the exhibition match between Willie Mosconi & Jimmy Carras? :) Have seen a few clips, but it would be awesome to see the full match and it would also be a nice way to honour Willie in the run up to the Mosconi Cup. Thanks again guys, you rock.

I got the 8 from CJ one afternoon in Affton Billiards for 20 a game I had him about 6 games stuck when the house pro came in and asked me what I was doing. I said robbing this sucker with a spray painted pool cue for $20 a game He said that’s CJ Wiley and you need more than the 8. And that’s a spray painted Balabushka he’s playing with I told CJ his action was queered played till we were even and kindly quit him

C.J. Wiley was a poor loser. Notice he did not look Efren In the eye when he shook hi hand AND he refused to shake the referees hand. My respect for him went WAAAY down.
