EFREN REYES vs EARL STRICKLAND - The Maine Event 14.1 Championship

Another chapter in the rivalry between Efren Reyes and Earl Strickland, this time they are playing straight pool back in September 1995 at the Maine Event 14.1 Championship at Spot Shot Billiards in Portland, Maine.
Reyes was only a year removed from his US Open 9-Ball title, and had won both a Sands Regency Open title and a PBT 8-Ball title this same year.
Strickland was two years removed from his third US Open 9-Ball win in 1993 and would earn a million dollars for running eleven racks of 9-ball just over six months after this match.
This is one match to 150 points. Note that there are numerous scoring errors by the match referee who is calling our current runs.

Unquestionably the most beautiful of all competitive pocket billiard games, along with snooker. Both are chess compared to the checkers of 9 ball. :P At least make 10 ball the official rotation game. True tests of skill in all things always seek to eliminate as much as possible the unpredictable touch of lady luck. THANKS PAT!

Definitely the most boring, even moreso than one pocket. Like unsalted potatoes, sure, it gets the job done, but could be so much better. Like rotation or even one pocket.

In YOUR opinion. There's a reason that the most coveted record in western pocket billiards to break has been the 14.1 record for decades. Period. It's cool. Some people like tic-tac-toe. Many others prefer chess.@@onepocketnovice

FWIW, in my own younger, more ignorant days I felt pretty much the same as you do now. Maybe one day you will have a similar epiphany. @@onepocketnovice

@@tonybrady1176 The pockets are smaller, the table is larger, the balls are smaller, the cues have less forgiveness, and the scoring is key to winning. It is a very challenging game! Lots of safe shots and cue ball manipulation . It's like the St. Andrews of billiards. In my opinion 🙂

Filipino government figured out that placing pool tables in certain neighborhoods kept the crime down.. hence why so many Filipinos are good players it's become an important sport there

Back when straight pool wasn't Earls forte yet. But I always root for Earl. Nobody shows so much passion of the game and sport more than Earl.

21:10 ALWAYS THOUGHT BALLS HAD TO BE SHOT INTO 2 CORNER POCKETS. NOT SIDE POCKET OR UPPER CORNERS. GREAT UPLOAD.

You are thinking of one pocket, this 14.1 aka straight pool. This is the game they played in the old school days. If you've ever seen the Hustler, that's what fast Eddie and Fats were playing.

It'd be great if you could add the 14.1 match between Earl and the late Nick Vlahos, who in one pocket and 14.1 could compete against anyone. From the late 1960's to the present, "Little Nicky" was the finest all-around pool talent ever to come out of the D. C. area----he was beating the best players there when he was 15.

Idk, I can't imagine these old videos without him.... he kinda adds to the unique quality of Accu Stats videos. I hear ya tho, I can understand why some are annoyed by his commentary, I guess it's a personal opinion type deal. Still excellent videos tho. Especially one's featuring Efren...😊👍👍🐐
