Very nice setup, Richard! As an input: Maybe also think about the actuators soon getting dirty and getting stuck. Would be a good idea to keep them under some kind of metal sheet structure to protect them as they are not quite built for dirty work. Keep up the good work!

Maybe add a scraper on the bottom that cleans off the conveyor belt on the return path in case the belt gets some debris on it?

Great work so far. It'll really help small farmers everywhere. I wanted to make a couple suggestions about the sectioned off space where you collect the eggs: -Many egg mobiles have shelving to place a 30 cell egg carton (or an alternative) next to the belt, so you can use 2 hands for cranking the belt and removing the eggs. Maybe it's in the plans and I missed it, but it may be worth considering if you haven't already. You may also want to remember to save floor space for floor-to-ceiling storage of spare 30 cell cartons and protect them from poop with more plastic sheeting. -Lastly, idk if its a concern that the belt sags on the bottom, leaving a small amount of space for the young chickens to somehow damage it or roost on it (and poop on it). I guess we won't really know until your next flock is inside (unless you know something I don't). Looking forward to seeing the process and the end result. GL

i was also wondering about the sag in the belt. one extra roller ( or even a section of steel rod) on the underside in the middle would probably mitigate that.

Not keeping extra egg cartons in the egg mobile would be more hygienic....😉

Beautiful design! One thing you may want to look at is chickens being able to get up on the underside of the belt.

Richard..... you clearly have so much fun “playing mad scientist”.... to brilliant results by the way. I had a thought to share relative to shade solutions if needed into the season and the tunnels. Ever heard of shade sails? They come in or can be made in several shapes and are held through guy wires and anchors on poles planted in the ground around the tunnels.... in this context they can be moved or placed and removed as needed.

I hope after project Eggmobile 2.0 is done, you are capable of make a package IKEA like(you are in Sweden sooo...:)) and you can ship it over across Europe, for those who would like to acquire the kit and put it together at our farms. Cheers,
@annburge291
@annburge291 3 года назад
Heat in the tunnels... what about a dark metal chimney.... perhaps near the centre to suck the hot air out and the inlets of fresh air at the ends with shade cloth... so you don't need to have shade cloth over the lot?
@deaconlyric
@deaconlyric 3 года назад
I like the shelf idea below. I think there should also be some sort of clear plexi guard so that as you're cranking the conveyor belt, there isn't any fecal matter flicking up in your face or on other equipment if it's loose or wet poop.
@adrianabad9823

The project is well executed!! For the winter time isolation is a concern? Or its ok that open air from down platform is open?...cold air will come from bottom for sure, but at least if warm air is well obtured before it escapes across roofing it could improve the general isolation of the cubicle. And idea, with some expanded cork around inner walls and roof, but not platform base, it could help. Another idea, though me myself don’t see it well landed yet, is to put some led light for growing plants inside, that in some winter days of north Europe will give some light for the flock and just a bit of more comfy warmth. I just comment them in case it can help bring other related ideas to you.

Aren't you concerned with manure build up on the roof of the nesting structure and above the area for egg collection? It would be also very interesting to hear about the potential savings in labour you want to achieve by this new system.

Fascinating! It is confusing, however, that you are going to keep your birds in because of the pandemic? Why is that? I heard a mango tested positive too... does that mean you are tunneling all your produce?
@LuckMotocross
@LuckMotocross 3 года назад
you could suspend the nestbox in one point and auto levelling it via two or more dampers (car trunk pistons). It will auto level in both planes if the dampers are well positioned. Plus the dampers will dampen any movement caused by the chicken or the quad.

So. Another solution for mounting your actuators. You are worried about the strength of the metal roof being able to cope with the stress and weight of the actuator cycling.. Instead of carving holes in the end of the nesting boxes and changing the whole design. Simply add a rolled bead or 2 in the roof panel. It will ad tremendous strength. It's faster when it goes into production. No Cad files need to be changed and it's the simplest solution to keep labor costs down. Cool set up
@carolewarner101
@carolewarner101 3 года назад
How are you going to gain access to the tunnel if you have egg mobiles blocking both entrances? That would also block the air flow to keep things cool in there when it heats up during the day I would think. I guess you could park them a bit away from the tunnel and create some sort of covered run to get them in there yet keep any bird poo falling on them from above between the two structures... Wow. It's gonna be a heck of a year! Hope the bird flu resolves pretty quickly this season so you can get the girls out in the fields asap.

It seems like it'd be simpler to omit the internal new wall you had to build by punching the end of the conveyer belt out through the wall, maybe with a small cover? I guess it's a little trickier because of where the door is, but maybe out through opposite end instead? Would leave more space in the eggmobile too

Wondering when we'll get to meet the new staff? Possible fit a couple of rollers underneath support the belt, it could possibly sag more when warm and over time.

Instead of an actuator to level the nest box, a damper should do the job cheaper and reliably. Something like a tube in a tube, one tube connected to the box and the other to the egg mobile. Some sort of stiff grease between the tubes to resist quick motion but allow slow settling. Lots of off the shelf components basically do the same thing.

For future design have the hanging chains be an inverted v shape connecting to the outside edges of the box. This enables the box to still swing and auto level whilst still supporting the outside edges in case you have a bunch of hens decide to only use one side.
@danielhagerby927

I did that (keeping two flocks separated in the polytunnel) this fall. Worked fine - but not an obvious improvement to having them all in one flock (which I have now). Just more work, without any visible benifits. That was my conclusion anyway,
@Vean440
@Vean440 3 года назад
O.o seeing something live I've had in my head since I've seen your v1 few years back looks amazing! :D I know you are not a fan of total automation but why not make the rolling boxes auto level with the simple ardiuno + ultrasonic distance measuring of a metal strip end hanging? Or even a level sensor (more expensive).

Pretty posh coop. Farming elevated to new high levels. Next? Conveyor belt for the barn manure. Or a conveyor system for the chef to get the food out to hungry guests. Sky’s the limit.
@tonylorentzen
@tonylorentzen 3 года назад
It'd be nice if the whole assembly could slide out of the house for easier access to cleaning, repairs etc. You could install the whole nesting box on a beam with rollers. Not sure of the weight distribution would cause the house to tip over, but it might need a couple of support legs in one end.

Hi Richard, I think the egg mobile design would be a problem to keep your hens laying in it over winter. With the mesh floor, I feel like it would be very difficult to keep the temperature on a good level when it starts freezing outside. Not to bash your ideas, but this may be something that you have not yet thought about.

what keeps the wind from flipping the solar pannel.... each unbuffered flip makes nano cracks into the pannels Si crystal struckture, that kills conversion efficiency of the panel. pretty fast

Looks pretty sweet, but between price point and need for electricity really seems over complicated. I suppose if egg production was on a grand scale this could be neccessary, but still seems a bit high tech for chickens dropping out eggs and putting them in a basket. But hey, keep thinking and inventing
